Please use this thread as a place to ask questions that are specific to your save, such as:

    • "Why is my tactic not working?"

    • "What role should I play this player in?"

    • "I have £xxm to spend, who should I buy?"

If you are asking for tactical help/advice, please post an image of your formation and what insutructions/roles you have set.

As a rule of thumb, if you ask a question, answer a question. This is what keeps this thread alive and useful.

A recollection of a 7 player Football Manager season. Highs, Lows and throwing Elbows. Part 1 - Meet the Managers.

First off like to preface this with saying this has somewhat been inspired by u/Hurball and his Millwall adventures, so a big thanks for those great posts and if you haven't read them please do they are a treat.

So me and my friends decided to do an online game of football manager in the premier league, this is a summary of the season. Think of it as 'The Premier Leagues Years *INSERT DATE*' only with about a production budget of 50 pence, crammed packed with shouts of "PRESS CONTINUE" and "STOP POACHING MY STAFF", you don't get that on Sky Sports now do ya?

    Please don't sue Sky Sports.

    So before the season began we all agreed that we had the pick of the teams in the league as long as they were not what we considered to be the top 8 in the league. This meant no; City, United, Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea, Wolves and Leicester. As a result it lead to this Mottley Crew of managers;

Unbelievable Jeff (Myself) managing West Ham United IROOOOOONS. A West Ham fan in RL so the stakes were doubled not to sink into the championship. A manager who loves attacking football with an inability to defend any type of crossing or set pieces. Has a habit of buying players on finance and hoping that by the time the repayments come by the club somehow has money to cover it. Predicted to finished 11th an average mid table season, but I can tell you dear reader my ambitions for West Ham is much higher.

Cedric managing the mighty Norwich. A Belgium lad who in previous ventures has carried out remarkable achievements with poor sides with his asymmetrical formations that will cause anyone with OCD to have a breakdown right there and then. Transfer policy I'm pretty sure revolves around him traveling around parks with a net ready to sweep up any teenager with any sort of potential. Predicted to finish 20th, rock bottom - will Cedric's Canaries defy expectation? Or will they continue their habit of being a yoyo club.

Andy Carrot managing Everton. A behemoth of a man standing a foot taller than anybody (and that's not counting the Afro), who apparently played football at international level according to his bio. But I'm convinced the man was in fact some sort of wrestler given his performative tendency to strike out at his fellow managers before promptly storming out of press conferences in a way that'd make the Rock blush. Management style is hard to place as it appears to be based on a vague notion of 'ATTACK OR YOU GET THE BAT' based on inside sources within the club whose identity will remain anonymous for their own safety. Predicted to finish 9th, the Toffees find themselves teetering on the edge of Europa can they make that push? Will Carrots bat claim more victims?

Mr Hatton managing Newcastle. Somebody relatively new to Football manager whose previous achievements involved spending United's entire transfer budget on Nathan Ake. Think of him as Carrot LiteTM, not quite a hulking behemoth but a similar 'motivational' strategy. Predicted to finish 17th, modest expectations from the outset. Will Hatton lead the Geordies to glory, or will Sports Directs live sports expansion go down the pan?

Andre managing Crystal Palace, although when I say managing more like out sourcing. Now this might be giving the game away a little bit early but he only turned up for like 10 matches so think of him as a slightly more competent Roy Hodgeson as otherwise don't really have bearing due to him sunning himself for three quarters of the season, presumably dodging income tax in Barbados the dodgy bugger. Predicted to finish 12th.

Mr Smith is the sixth manager in the save managing Southampton. A real life Spurs fan so he's probably used to mediocre players with hardly anything in the transfer budget and moreorless that's what he would find in this season. With Andy Carrot and Aaron their motivation stemming from threats of physical violence, Smith's approach to motivation is built upon verbal abuse. Same philosophy just very different method, think Mike Bassett at Half time to Mexico. Predicted to finish 10th, a fair estimate given their squad. But who knows? Football's a funny game.

Finally our last manager to introduce is Mr Wilson managing Watford. A Watford fan in reality and like myself larger stakes are placed upon his performance this season. A controversial manager given his tendency to rant about his players in lengthy press conferences. As for managerial strategy I genuinely don't have a clue, but more on that will be developed as the season progresses. Predicted to finish 13th, unlucky for some - will it also be for Mr Wilson?

    The Enforcer Himself...

    Transfers

    A brief round up on the Summer business of the clubs;

West Ham United:OUT: The opening window saw the departure of Carlos Sanchez, Michail Antonio, Robert Snodgrass and Fabian Balbuena for a combined total of £27.5 million.

IN: Just as 4 players had left the fish bowl that is the London Stadium 4 players joined including Alfredo Morelos, the fiery Colombian Striker in a deal amounting to £25 Million, Justin Kluivert for £20 Million and Amine Gouiri for a similar fee though he was immediately loaned out to Wolfsburg for the season. Accompanying them in true West Ham fashion was two loanees Luca Sangalli a versatile hard working Midfielder and Thierry Correia in at Right back given West Ham's habit of having full backs with the bone density of soggy Weetabix.

    Norwich:

    OUTS: Nobody

INS: Marcel Schmelzer for £5 Million, who admittedly Cedric was on holiday at the time and so he didn't even actually sign him.

    Everton:

OUTS: 3 players left Everton in the summer including Maarten Stekelenburg for £1mil, Ourmar Niasse departing for Ukraine for £4.8 million and finally through some fraud or perhaps Andy's bat Theo Walcott somehow demanding a £12.25million transfer that would see the 30 year old shipped off to China.

INS: Only two incomings for Everton in the form of Dominik Szoboszlai for £20 Million from RB Salzburg, whose name length may well be a piece of marketing genius if Everton charge printing by the letter. The other incoming being the loan of Palace's Wayne Hennessey as a back up keeper.

    Newcastle:

OUTS: Only one player left Newcastle in the form of Henri Saivet for £1.3 Million, most of which I assume went directly to Mike Ashley's lunch bill.

INS: Three fresh faces arriving at Newcastle during the Summer including Lewis Baker the 24 year old from Chelsea for a price tag of £2.5 Million. Accompanying him was £13Million signing Tom Rogic from Celtic along with Uniteds Angel Gomes on loan for the season.

    Crystal Palace:

OUTS: Andre did stay throughout the opening summer and that saw Luka Milivojevic depart for Leicester for £24 Million, a deal that could cost Palace perhaps?

INS: Four players appearing at Selhurst park including Jamie Shackleton, Marcus Dewhurst, Nohan Kenneth and Karamoko Dembele ahead of a £9 Million transfer.

    Southampton:

OUTS: Jannik Vestergaard departs for Shakhtar for £7.5 Million

INS: The pair of defenders Thio Kehrer and Marlon joining Southampton for a combined total of £11.9 Million.

    Watford:

OUTS: Andre Grey departs for Saudi Arabia for £500k

INS: Ahmed Kutucu for £6 Million arriving from Schalke in the hopes the young Turkish striker can hit the ground running in the Premier League.

I did tell you, I have a certain way with transfers...

The stage is set. The season is about to begin. Will all the managers survive the season? Who will go down and who will strive for a European tour?

The Bristol Rovers ‘Bilbao Basque’ challenge - West Country edition

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 03:35 AM PDT

After many years of being obsessed with Athletic Club de Bilbao, their absolutely incredible ethos and self-imposed restrictions, I've decided to attempt the same with my club, Bristol Rovers.

I've actually already got through ten seasons on a separate Gas save with no restrictions, however, after winning every domestic and European trophy available before losing the 2030 World Cup final as England manager, my aptitude to continue progressing that save is nil. So, as I sat there thinking of all the different teams I could try a new save with, I only ended up in one place... back in Bristol. Only this time, with a twist.

I will be doing my very own Bilbao Basque-only iteration with the mighty blue-and-white quarters - West Country edition. Or as I like to call them: Wesque (sorry).

My player search filters are set up to only show players born in specific regions: South-West England, Gwent, Cardiff, Hereford and Shrewsbury (quite frankly only included this because the house I'm buying is called 'Shrewsbury' lol). These filters cover 137 individual places of birth (taken directly from the editor) and enable circa 250 players from my 26,000 small database player pool. Additionally, I'm also permitting myself the ability to sign any British u18, much like Athletic Club with u18 Spaniards.

This will be a long haul challenge; one where success won't be immediate and youth development will be key, but hopefully an interesting twist to an otherwise classic LLM save. Up the Gas!

Can Messi do it on a cold rainy night in Condeixa?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 06:47 AM PDT

Can Messi do it on a cold rainy night in Condeixa?

It was a financially ruinous deal, but I managed to snag a 39 years old Lionel Messi and have him play half a season for Condeixa. Had to pay €400K to Barcelona, €500K to Messi, a €170K monthly wage and €17K per game and per goal, but... I was finally able to get the answer to this important question: can Messi do it on a cold rainy night in Condeixa?

Well... spoilers alert: not really. I mean, he wasn't bad or anything but the Messiesque moments were few and far between. Here's what Messi looked like when he joined us:

    https://preview.redd.it/3f46d3u62es41.png?width=1298&format=png&auto=webp&s=d4eac3dfecb0d5f8f9c1abc4404a98357034727b

His technical and mental skills were as amazing as you can get, but his physicals were a complete disaster. Messi can barely move and he'd probably lose an arm wrestling match against a 5 year old. Nevertheless, he was still my best penalty taker and that ended up being valuable: Messi scored three times from the penalty spot.

I tried him in three positions: AMR, AMC and Striker. I've initially played him as an Advanced Playmaker on the right wing, as I had success with Di Maria in that role in the past... but Messi didn't click there. He simply wasn't involved in the match.

I've then tried him as a DLF, both as single forward and paired with another player. He played reasonably well and even scored a goal. The lack of mobility, though, meant that he wasn't all that threatening most of the time.

In the AMC role, I've played him as an Enganche. It was a complete failure initially, but things got better when I swapped my Inside Forwards for Winger - I guess they were getting into Messi's area. He still wasn't all that involved, but it was here that we did see those genius Messi moments, with some brilliant passes.

I was also hoping to take advantage of Messi in free kicks and corners, and that worked reasonably well, with Messi getting a couple of assists in those plays.

In the end, though, it wasn't as incredible as I had expected - specially comparing with the time when I had a 41 years old Cristiano Ronaldo in FM2015. It could be that my tactics aren't suited to take advantage of having an Enganche, but it usually felt that Messi wasn't in the game. So, in the end, I don't think Messi can do it in a cold rainy night in Condeixa. At least, the 39 years old Messi.

This is Messi just before retiring:

Nevertheless, even if it was somewhat disappointing, it did feel special to have him on the team. The fans also named him in the seasonal best team, albeit as a sub. His shirt sales were disappointing though: he didn't even make it to the top 5.

I've offered him the position of Condeixa B Manager, so he will remain managing our reserves for the next couple of seasons - something that Cristiano Ronaldo also did.

    Here is Messi's career:

His in-game highlights include scoring the winning goal in the 2020 Champions League final against Liverpool and winning La Liga in 2021, 2022 and 2026. The last trophy in his career was the Portuguese Cup, which Condeixa won after beating Sporting 2-0 in the final.
