I played football manager for the first time today!

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 05:20 PM PDT

I've been working long hours on the Covid wards, and seeing as we cant go outside anymore, on my days off I've been wanting to learn a new skill that involves minimal effort.... so my boyfriend put me on FM on his steam account!

I know nothing about football, but spent today learning about tactics, and formations, and lots of different players. It's safe to say I spent about 10 hours on the thing today - I've won all my matches so far, including my first league game! It's definitely a lot more effort than I originally anticipated, but so worth it. Come payday, I'm definitely gonna get myself FM19 so I can sink more hours into it and play it on my laptop at lunch breaks at work.

Other than fan-girling a little over my new little obsession, I really came here to ask if anyone has any starting out tips for a complete beginner! My partner has grown a bit tired of me asking hundreds of football questions... so I've come to ask you instead! What should I pay the most attention to? Are there any good online resources I can use?

Making Stevenage Steven Again - Part 1

Making Stevenage Steven Again - Part 1

No idea if anyone will find this interesting, but this has been my new Quarantine save on FM19. Got inspired by a comment in one of the Millwall threads who mentioned this challenge -- let yourself be known in the comments!

The challenge is simple: take charge of Stevenage, and only sign Stevens or variations (Stephen, Stefan, Stevenson, etc.). I am still debating whether I am allowed to sign non-Steven regens or extend contracts of my default non-Steven players. We'll see how things go.

Steven Stevens takes control of The Boro with nothing but regional playing experience, a Continental B License, and a vision. The squad is big but slightly unbalanced, and there is an appalling lack of Stevens of any kind. I get my scouts some vital instructions that I will be using throughout the save. If there is any other Steven variation I should be looking at, please let me know.

With this I will take over the world.

With no budget, it's off to loan offers and trialists. I'd love a better keeper, right back, right wing, and striker. Jamie Stephens comes in on trial and is better than Farman but is injured until next year. Stephen Ireland declines our contract offer, mentioning something about his grandma. In the end I get two loanees: right back Steven Sessegnon, brother of Ryan, and attacking midfielder Bradley Stevenson. An army of trialists yields only two worthy Stevens: midfielder Stefan Haas and left back Steven Da Veiga. In our opener, Stevenson bangs in a historic penalty, the first Steven goal of the Stevens era. This ends up being the winner as Farman eases my doubts by punching a cross under no pressure into Tranmere's striker.

    Stevensooooooooon!

The season starts fantastically, and we win our first six games, shooting us straight to the top of the table. Sessegnon loves to bomb up the wing as much as his brother and Haas exceeds expectations. We're sadly dumped out of the Carabao Cup when I rest the loanee Stevens. My Steven philosophy is further justified when the Manager of the Month awards come around.

    I already have imitators.

Then, our luck and form changes. Our starting centrebacks get hurt, so I play a loanee striker who is a competent CB for some reason. He gets a straight red and 3 match ban. This sparks a long winless streak, our best result a penalty shootout "win" in the Checkatrade. We fall down the table despite our early start. I decide a redefining of Stevenball is in order: first, I hire Stevie Campbell as Assistant Manager, and switch to a Narrow Diamond 4-4-2. We go in 4-1 down at halftime, so I switch back to 4-2-3-1.

    Gibsoooooooon!

The next few months are a rollercoaster. After this miraculous point, the wins come back for a bit until a plague of injuries (thankfully all Non-Stevens) leave us playing the scrubs. Another losing streak ensues, minus a 3-1 win where Moses Makasi scores two penalties then, in a desperate attempt to get his hat trick by any means possible, rolls the ball past his keeper from 40 yards. My depleted ranks get me thinking if extending contracts are necessary, until I make a discovery. With my scouting budget depleted, I've taken to searching "Steven" and "Stephen" in the search bar bring up hidden Stevens: middle names. With the January Transfer window approaching, I'm hoping I can get an influx of Stevens, Stephens, and Stefanovics in to help carry us to promotion.

After recovering from a 3-2 1st leg defeat, I was 2-0 up away from home in the 2nd leg... Then my keeper does this... (sorry that it's mirrored IDK why that happened)
