How the f—k do you defend in this game

FM20. Currently playing as Newcastle. I've been playing since FM16 but dear god, this year's game has been tearing me a new one.

I used to consider myself relatively decent at the game. I've won a couple of trophies with Newcastle through the years, but I am getting destroyed right now. I have tried everything I can possibly think of to stop conceding so much but it doesn't matter. I've tried 5 at the back, counter attack, defensive mentality, defensive training three times a day, I even signed Kristoffer Ajer who looks like an absolute beast... and I still routinely give up 3+ goals a game to mid-lower table teams.

The variety of goals I concede knows no bounds. Sometimes my defenders completely whiff on a tackle and leave me exposed, sometimes I concede headers off of set pieces (I've set the corner tactics to man mark tall players but that just seemed to make it worse), and sometimes the other team just smashes in ridiculous finishes.

It feels like no matter what I do it backfires. If I play deeper with five at the back and try to counterattack, the other team dominates the game and scores 3+. If I try to use more positive tactics and press higher up, they break the press and run rampant at my exposed back line to score 3+.

I don't know whether this is just me venting or if it's a cry for help. I just want to know what it takes to put together something that resembles a proper defense. It feels literally impossible right now.

Please make it stop FM. Please, I beg you. Please.
