Posted: 04 Feb 2020 08:38 PM PST On January 1st, I bought my first ever Football Manager title in FM20. I've always wanted to try my hand at it and decided to finally give it a shot. I was immediately bombarded with stats, news, finances and all sorts of things that immediately overwhelmed me. I decided I needed to learn better to do better and spent the next few days watching videos, tutorials and how to's to make sense of this intense game. I decided to scrap the Arsenal managerial experience I was (poorly) building and took over at Borussia Mönchengladbach in a new save. My first few weeks were going well, I was in strong preseason form and my players were uniting behind me... until competitive play started. My Bundesliga debut opened to a 5-1 thrashing by Schalke and my hopes dashed. I kept experimenting, watching videos explaining the game and built up more ideas. I was winning a few games, drawing most but not losing very many. It was plain vanilla from me and my team which was disheartening to this noob player. Finally, something clicked and whether it was the formation, the tactics, or whatever else I couldn't care less because I went unbeaten for a good stretch of time. I went from 8th place to 3rd and made it all the way to the semis of the Euro Cup which was well beyond what the board wanted (though the 9-1 beat down by Man Utd wasn't in the plans). I was feeling so good about myself and it got even better as I had made it to the DFB Pokal final. A chance at silverware in my first ever real season. When I finally had the time between my classes I returned to my dorm and loaded up my save. I got dressed in my suit, shaved my face and sat down ready to play. Borussia Dortmund vs Borussia Mönchengladbach in the final. I'm sweating at this point and have my strongest possible team out there. A goal-less first half left me anxious. A goal-less first 35 minutes left me even more nervous. But then, in the 85th minute, with a perfectly placed cross from László Bénes, Matthias Ginter volleys true to the bottom corner to give Gladbach the lead. I was screaming, fist pumping and jumping with joy. It was the deciding goal as Gladbach walked away from the DFB Pokal final with a trophy in hand. Dressing up for a cup final, dancing as your team lifts a cup, and having a second half turn around defines this game and damn if it doesn't feel good to make right choices and win like that. Here's to my second season being even more spectacular. Thank you Football Manager. [link] [comments] | ||
