Posted: 27 Feb 2020 12:18 PM PST This is an idea which is entirely nonessential that I've wanted for several years now that I wanted to share with all of you. I would love to see a map tab in FM which allows you to move around, clicking on countries and being able to move around those countries and clicking on cities and viewing the clubs in that city and possibly players born in said city. FM already has where a player was born on their profile. With this function you would be able to see the clubs and other players born in that city. For me this would bring so much more to the game as I'd be able to connect with the smaller clubs I manage in my journeyman saves and it would make things like finding Basque players for clubs like Bilbao way more interesting. This is just a random idea I've had for a while that I thought some of you would enjoy. [link] [comments]

From zero to hero, the despair and joy of Football Manager Posted: 27 Feb 2020 05:11 AM PST After going cold turkey on buying the game since FM 2016 (after playing every version to death since 01/02), a few weeks ago I took the plunge and loaded up FM 2020. I decided to try and get Swansea back to the big time and figured that they had a decent enough squad that it would be a challenge but definitely achievable. I soon remembered why had given up playing the game, as the emotional toll of seeing your decisions make zero difference really hit home. I could not buy a win no matter what I tried - formation changes, squad rotation, calling out Andre Ayew for pathetic performances given his £80k per week (!) salary. I promptly lost the dressing room and I knew I was a dead man walking. To their credit the board did give me more time than I expected, but they eventually put me out of my misery in early December after something like 12 games without a win. At this point the realism of the game kicked in - who in their right mind would touch a 33 year old manager who had proved absolutely nothing in the game. A few months passed and I couldn't get a job for love nor money. A few failed interviews at Championship and League 1 clubs made me question my decision to buy the game, and I was very close to deleting it and admitting my days as a successful football manager were behind me. One last search of the job boards gave me a glimpse of hope - Exeter City were languishing at the bottom of League 2 and in real danger of falling out of the football league. The board were clearly desperate and gave me a chance by offering an interview. They clearly saw something in my passionate responses, buying into my vision of not only wanting to play attacking football but also to thrill and entertain the fans. A contract was offered in late Feb and I was back in the hot seat, determined to rebuild my shattered reputation and rekindle my love for this beautiful game by keeping Exeter up. It immediately became clear that the new version of the game took no prisoners and I got off to a terrible start that made the Board question whether they'd made the right choice. Constant tinkering with tactics and approach wasn't endearing me to the Grecian faithful, and I yet again found myself under pressure. A few times it was clear that I needed a positive result to keep my job, but to their credit somehow the boys always delivered at critical points and we crawled our way to safety with 1 game to spare. That summer there was a lot of soul searching - was I the right man for the job? Did I have it in me to make a success of this club? Board expectations weren't too lofty - they were happy with mid table mediocrity for a season or two, but I had other plans for this powerhouse of the South West. I decided I had one last crack of the whip in me and set about plans for building a dynasty. I undertook a complete overhaul of the squad, more than I've ever done in any version of the game. I sold pretty much every player I had and brought in as many newly released youth players from bigger clubs as I could, selling them on the project I had in mind. I also managed to decorate the team with a few prem and championship youngsters on loan, promising them that it would ultimately be the making of their careers. In came TJ Eyoma and Tashan Oakley Boothe on loan from Spurs, Nabil Touiazi on loan from from Man City, George Thomas and Kiernan Dewsbury Hall on loan from Leicester, and Callum Gribbin from Sheffield United. I chopped and changed tactics in pre season but ended up settling on a 5-2-1-2 with wing backs attacking gegenpress. We started off the season at a rocket's pace, other clubs simply couldn't live with our high intensity press and attacking ability. The love for the game came flooding back and suddenly all those dark days during January waiting for the phone to ring were all worthwhile! The season couldn't have gone better and we stormed League 2 unbeaten with a record number of wins and overall points total. Touiazi belied his tender 18 years and was unreal up front, cutting teams to ribbons with his pace and flair. Ethan Hamilton from Man Utd was a revelation in midfield, scoring 9 and assisting 10 in a series of dominant performances. We even somehow got to the quarter final of the league cup to put the rest of the country on notice that something special was brewing in the South West. As well as rebuilding the team, I knew that I needed assistance with my project and that my backroom staff had to be the very best I could attract. A complete overhaul at the same time as the first team squad at the start of the season meant that I was able to mould the club in my image from the start of the season, and it paid spectacular dividends. The cherry on the top was my hiring of a little known Director of Football from Benin on a cool £325 per week. He immediately paid back my faith by negotiating the sale of our sell on clauses for Ethan Ampadu and Ollie Watkins for £7m and £900k respectively - now we had the funds to back up ambition. Despite our glorious season, I knew that my players had massiely overachieved and that the majority of them weren't going to cut the mustard in League 1. I had to be cut-throat, letting go many of the true legends who had been the first names on team sheet during the previous campaign to try and bring in further funding. By adjusting most of my transfer budget to supplement my pathetic wage bill, I was able to bring in a few quality additions at the end of their contracts - Touiazi, Eyoma and Oakley Boothe all bought into the vision and joined on permanant deals after their loan, Alife Jones from Soton and Jake Salter Clarke from Chelsea brought a touch of class to my defence. Tyler Walker came in from Forest on a free to bolster my strike force, and I plucked Jojo Wollacott the Ghanian goalkeeper for a paltry £33.5k from Bristol City to be my number 1 between the sticks. Adam Lewis joined from Liverpool with the promise of game time and the freedom to attack with abandon from left back. I went back to the loan market and went slightly overboard, fuelled by my newly agreed affiliate deal with Chelsea which meant they were happy to lend me players for zero wage outlay. In total I brought in Connor Gallagher, Scott Banks and Dujon Sterling from Chelsea, Herbie Kane from Liverpool, Ante Palaversa, Eric Garcia and Florent Da Silva from Man City, Matty Longstaff from the Toon Army, and Tahith Chong from Man United. Only having 5 of these guys in my squad each week was heartbreaking, but they understood the goal we were driving for and there wasn't a hint of dissent throughout the season. The team went beyond my wildest expectations and yet again stormed the league, losing only 4 matches (fuck you Fleetwood) on their way to yet another record wins and points total in League 1. Tyler Walker finished top scorer with 30 league goals and 38 in total, whilst my wing backs performances were at the next level. Dujon Sterling got 11 goals and 22 assists from right back, whilst Adam Lewis also helped himself to 11 goals and 10 assists. Again we fell at the quarter final stage of the Carabao cup, losing to Spurs in a 3-2 thriller. There was heartbreak and pride in equal measure in our FA Cup run, against the odds making it to the final with the highlight being a 2-1 win against Liverpool at home despite being 1-0 down going into the last 10 minutes. Ultimately Man Utd proved a bridge too far in the final, but the fan and the Board were ecstatic at their day out and the journey we took them on. There was some cup success, with the Leasing.com Trophy being claimed courtesy of a 5-2 battering of Man City U23s in the final. A league and cup double were beyond the wildest dreams of the fans going into the season, and now we stand on the verge of a historic season in the championship. The Board have finalised plans for an additional 3000 seats at St James Park (the Exeter version), taking our capacity up to c11k die hard fans for the coming season. I know another rebuild is on the cards and some tough decisions lie ahead, but the emotional rollercoaster has been incredible and made me fall in love with this game all over again - including the standard anger from the missus at me spending so much time on the laptop. I'm currently recovering from ankle surgery so I'm hoping to get the boys into the promised land of the premiership before I go back to work, but I've got another big target in my sights.... going back to the Liberty with this team I've built and showing them what they let get away. I WOULD LOVE IT IF WE BEAT THEM. [link] [comments]
