GUIDE: Here's my list of random FM tips and tricks that I've learned from other FM players and from my own experience of playing since FM17. Explanations and screenshots included!

    Posted: 29 Feb 2020 06:04 AM PST

Preface: This isn't a beginners' guide on how to start your first save, how to create the perfect tactic, who to sign, etc. These are just some random, helpful tips that I think not everyone knows about.

For example, did you know that you can make the game continue automatically without having to press your spacebar a thousand times?! (I'll explain this tip down below) I played 1,000 hours of FM and still didn't know that until someone in this sub-reddit told me. Hopefully, both beginners and veterans can pick up other tips like that from this post.

And if you have your own tips and tricks that I haven't mentioned in my post, post them in the comments so that others can see!

(This is a long post with lots of screenshot links that you have to click, so I suggest viewing this on a computer instead of viewing it on a mobile app.)

Tip 1.) When buying players, spread out the transfer fee into instalments so that you can pay it in smaller chunks per season instead of having to pay it all up front in one go. This puts less strain on your financials.

How I do it is: pay 33% of what you'd pay up front, then pay the remaining 66% in instalments spread across 3 seasons. This means you'll be paying 33% up front, 22% in the 2nd season, 22% in the 3rd season, and 22% in the 4th season.

After thousands of hours total on FM games, this 33/66 ratio is the one I've found to work the best.

[Screenshot Example] I've found that most of the time, they don't really ask you pay some kind of extra interest for spreading out the payment. So whether you pay 100% up front or use the 33/66 ratio, you'll still be paying a similar amount.

The only time spreading out transfer fees won't work is if you're trying to activate a release clause. Release clauses always have to be fully paid up front.

(Btw, you don't have to follow the 33/66 ratio too strictly. If you find your own way of spreading out a transfer fee using different clauses and instalments, then do what works for you.)

Tip 2.) There's an option for you to save multiple team selections / starting line-ups.

[Screenshot] In your Squad View and Tactics view, the option is on the top-right corner like in this screenshot.

So if you want to rotate your entire starting XI for a meaningless cup game, you can just simply click a button instead of having to drag players one by one!

Tip 3.) You can also create multiple shortlists.

Go to Scouting -> Shortlist, and [Screenshot] this is where the option is for creating new shortlists.

Useful when you're tracking many different kinds of players.

Tip 4.) When making a tactic, don't fuss too much about giving everyone green circles in the tactics screen.

This was one of the first beginner mistakes I fell for.

The green circles indicate which position and role a player is best suited to based on the distribution of their attributes. But this doesn't mean they can't play other roles and positions too. What I do is look at a player's attributes and decide for myself how I want to play them.

For example, [Screenshot] look at Ruben Neves. He only has a yellow circle for the "Half Back - Defend" role, which makes sense because despite his passing and mental strengths, he has some weaknesses in key areas such as heading, marking, tackling, etc. But despite that, I still play him in that role in order to make my tactic work the way I want to. And you can see on the bottom of the screenshot that he still plays well, averaging a 7.20 rating in the league in 3 seasons!

Play to your players' strengths, but remember to also create your tactic properly. You should find a perfect balance because adjusting your entire tactic just to give everyone green circles might do more harm than good.

Tip 5.) You can make the game automatically continue by changing some settings. Now you don't have to deal with the annoyance of clicking continue or pressing your spacebar every 6 seconds.

Very useful when you have to pee or want to make a cup of tea while the game continues through an international break.

[Screenshot] To do this, click the "FM" icon in the top-right corner -> click Preferences -> Advanced -> Interface -> scroll down to "Continue Game Timeout".

This lets you "choose the period of time before the game will automatically continue". This is disabled by default.

If you choose "X seconds", the game will continue after X seconds of you not doing anything.

If you choose "Instant", the game will continue instantly as long as you're not doing anything.

Now your game can continue on faster!

Btw, if the game instantly continues while you're doing something, or if you just want to pause the continuation and go back to the game, you can just press the [Esc] key on your keyboard and this will stop the automatic continuation.

Tip 6.) You can adjust "Detail Level" settings to make the game run way faster.

[Screenshot] To enter the settings menu, click the "FM" icon in the top-right corner -> click "Detail Level".

This lets you adjust the detail level in which different competitions are simulated.

Click through the different categories on the left-hand side, and sub-categories will appear on the right-hand side. For example, if you click on "International", you'll see the different competitions under it such as the World Cup, World Cup qualifiers, Euros, etc.

Personally, I just set EVERYTHING to "None" to make the game run as fast as possible (except for the competitions my senior squad competes in, which obviously can't be disabled). But if you want to choose some competitions to have higher detail levels, then go for it. Just disable the ones that are useless to you so that your game can run faster.

Tip 7.) The top text box is also actually a search bar that you can type in.

    Screnshot

Tip 8.) It only takes 2 years to get Spanish citizenship for players from South America, Central America, Andorra, Portugal, Philippines, and Equatorial Guinea.

EDIT: I give a more detailed explanation about this tip in my other comment below.

    Source: footballmanagerblog.org, and Wikipedia

So if you've bought wonderkids from one of these nations (if you're reading this, I'm sure you have) and you couldn't get a work permit for him, or your non-EU registration spots are full, etc., then you can send them on loan to Spain for two years in order to work around those work permit / registration rules.

Tip 9.) If you're playing in an unfamiliar league and don't know how strong other clubs are compared to yours, check the league's Season Preview.

[Screenshot] Here's where to find it.

I personally find this useful because it gives me some idea on what to expect against another club, and it also helps me decide what kind of mentality I want to set my tactic to.

Tip 10.) Always check competition rules.

[Screenshot] Here's where to find it.

There's usually a lot of useful information in there, and knowing about them might save you a lot of trouble with things such as accidentally buying a player without a work permit, accidentally buying a non-EU player when your non-EU slots are already full, not knowing about weird league play-off rules, not knowing you might be able to use more than 3 subs in some countries, etc.

Reading through them is quick and easy and will help you avoid making those mistakes.

Tip 11.) You can select multiple items using the following shortcuts:

    [Screenshot] [Ctrl] + [A] = selects all

[Screenshot] Hold [Shift] + [left click] one item + Hold [Shift] again + [left click] another item = selects those items and everything inbetween them

[Screenshot] Hold [Ctrl] + [left click] multiple items = selects those items one by one

The screenshots only show players in the squad view as an example. But you can also do this with other things, such as when selecting multiple players in your Shortlist view and in the Player Search view.

Tip 12.) You can sort items by more than one column.

Simply select one column, then hold [Shift] before selecting the next column. This will keep both column sortings activated. You can do this with as many columns as possible. To deactivate/reset, just double-click another column without holding [Shift].

[Screenshot] In this example, you can see that I sorted my squad view based on nationality first, then sorted based on wages second.

This trick can give you lots of control over the way items are sorted, which is helpful if you want to look at items in a certain arrangement.

Tip 13.) You can change the colours of attribute numbers, and you can also change the attribute number threshold.

[Screenshot] To do this, click the "FM" icon in the top-right corner -> click Preferences -> Advanced -> Most Common -> Skin Colours

The default threshold for excellent attributes is 16, 11 for good attributes, and 6 for average attributes. This default setting works well for bigger clubs. But if you're playing with smaller clubs, you might want to lower the numbers.

For example, in my Newcastle save, I slightly lowered them to 15 for excellent, 10 for good, and 5 for average.

When I play in the 5th or 6th tier of England or in a very small nation, I change iy to 12 for excellent, 8 for good, and 4 for average.

That's how I personally set them, but you should put yours to what you think feels right.

Tip 14.) You can add line separators in your squad/shortlist/player search/etc. view.

[Screenshot] To do this, right-click on any column -> click "Add Separator"

Just a simple thing that can make cluttered views look more organised.

Tip 15.) You can rearrange the sidebar buttons.

[Screenshot] To rearrange them, just simply drag them around with your mouse.

If you want to revert their arrangement back to default, go to "Preferences", and in the bottom-left corner, click "Reset" and choose "Sidebar Buttons".

Tip 16.) When trying to hire staff members, it's better to just look for them through search filters instead of placing an advert and waiting for them to apply for the job.

This is because when placing adverts, the people who come up don't always have the best attributes. But if you look for them yourself, you can min-max their attributes and make sure you're getting the best possible staff members.

So for example, I'm looking for a scout. Go to "Staff", then "Staff Search". [Screenshot] Then click on "Edit Search", click "Staff Role" and choose "Scout", click "Pick" under "Attributes" and choose "Judging Player Ability (JPA)" and "Judging Player Potential (JPP)", then change their "is at least" values to whatever number you want. Then press "OK".

[Screenshot] Then, change the Staff Search view to "Mental Attributes, which will bring up their JPA and JPP columns. Then, sort them through those two columns.

Now you can easily see who the very best available scouts are, which will make it easy for you to build a strong scouting department.

[Screenshot] This is what my medical department looks like. All physios have 20 physiotherapy, and all sports scientists have 20 sports science. You can easily do this with this method.

Tip 17.) When looking for staff members, you can filter out those who are interested in joining your first team staff, your reserves staff, or youth staff.

Do you find it annoying when you find a good coach for your U23s, and then you realise during contract negotiations that he's only interested in being a First Team Coach and not an U23s Coach? Now you can easily avoid that.

[Screenshot] In the Staff Search menu, just click on "Include" located in the top-right corner, and choose "First Team", "Reserves", or "Youth Team".

Now you'll find it easier to search for the best reserve/youth staff members.

Tip 18.) FMscout.com has an online "Coach Star Calculator" that lets you input a coach's attributes and tells you how many stars they have for that certain coaching role.

    Link here: https://www.fmscout.com/f-coach-rating-calculator.html

It says it's for FM19 but it's applicable for any FM version.

Tip 19.) Arrange friendly matches against very low-reputation clubs in order to get an easy morale boost.

Go to "Schedule" -> in the bottom-right corner, click "Arrange Friendly" -> in the right-hand side, click "Choose" -> "Very Small Reputation Teams" -> choose any team.

This makes you arrange friendlies against a team that you can beat 10-0 which boosts your players' morale.

I usually do this at the start of pre-season so that everyone starts off happy, then do another one at the end of pre-season so that everyone's happy before the first competitive match. What I do is I start my main starting XI and make them play 45 minutes, then sub them all off during halftime and bring on my secondary starting XI. This makes it so that everyone who takes part in that friendly gets a morale boost.

You can also do this during the season if your team somehow gets into a downward spiral and everyone has poor morale. Just make sure you don't over-congest your match schedule. If you only have 1 game a week, then it's probably safe to do this. But if you're playing 2 games a week, then there's no room to fit a friendly in. You're just going to over-play your players and risk injuring them.
