Are Work Rate and Determination important in player development? An experiment [OC]

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 03:29 PM PST

I have been playing Football Manager since 03/04 and for a long time there's been this myth circulating that work rate and determination are key when it comes to player development. I personally have fallen for this and in the earlier versions have not brought in players with significant potential, but low work rate and determination.

Having noticed this debated quite a lot with different opinions being expressed, such as hidden attributes or player personality or club facilities and coaches (something I agree on) having much more impact. Since I was unable to find conclusive evidence, I've decided to run an experiment on my own.

Instead of creating two players, one with low attributes, and other with high, I've created seven virtually identical players with different combinations of the attributes in question.

To preface this, I have set up some ground rules and here they are:

    • Every other attribute, including hidden ones, has been set to 10 (except injury proneness and goalkeepers attributes which are all set to 1. I don't want injuries hampering these guys' development)

    • They are all set to be 180cm tall and to weigh 70kg. I believe this is a rough average as I didn't want them to stand out or have physical advantages or disadvantages.

    • They have only one position, Central Midfielder with no preferred moves. This was done because I believe it to be the position from which a player with roughly equal attributes across the board can prosper the most.

    • Their advantages are that they're either footed and, of course, that their potential ability is 200.

    • They are born on the same date (you can call them clones). This was done to have them have a same starting point and so that their progress through ages can be tracked easier.

    • Players are distributed throughout seven different countries (England, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Portugal, The Netherlands). This was done to avoid them getting into each others way during development.

The rules of the save game (which I'll make available) are as follows:

    • Small database, with only 7 nations, each with top two leagues selected.

    • I will stop the game once a year to check on the players' progress.

    • The players will be rated on both development and performance. The quality of the club and the league in which they are in will also add in to the rating, but not as much.

With that out of the way, it's time to meet our cast of characters.

(Quick note, I did mess up one tad bit before adding in screenshots and that is that I've captured them roughly 7 days after starting a new game where they have already been snatched up by clubs)

First up, is Alex Tester. He is an English lad, with determination 20 and work rate 1. He was snatched up by Aston Villa.

Second is Bernard Testant, a Frenchmen, with determination 15 and work rate 5. He has already been recruited by PSG.

Next up, we have Carlo Testano, Italian with determination 10 and work rate 10, already at Inter Milan.

Daniel Testillo is our Spanish test subject with determination 5 and work rate 15. Signed by another big club in Atletico Madrid.

Our Portugese is Francisco Testao with determination 15 and work rate 15, in the youth ranks of Porto.

Gus Testijnk is our Dutch subject who has determination 5 and work rate 5. Unlike other players, his team Excelsior plays in the Dutch second tier.

And finally, we have Eric Teister, my pick for shiniest career with determination 20 and work rate 20. Surprisingly, he signed for Mainz, who, albeit not a bad team, hardly a top side as they're predicted to finish 12th.

This post has been here to set the stage, if you're interested enough in yearly updates, I'll write one tomorrow. If you'd like to have bigger intervals between the updates, then I'll likely need a few more days. If you'd like me to just post end results, that's going to take even more.

The subreddit is not lively or active enough at the moment, posts and threads are getting barley any replies and the amount of low quality shit posts posted are ridiculous.

If we can do anything to make the sub more active and less dead, let's do that because this sub has lots of potential and FM is special to us.

Can't believe you can land this guy for £8.5m! He got over 20 goals and assists as a back up to Bruno Fernandes.
