- And the first transfer listing of the year goes too...
- When I promise my wonder kid he can leave for PSG but I then activate a three year extension
- When you score but it’s immediately followed by a highlight from kick-off
- Coach: What position do you play? Wass: Yes.
- When you save-scum because PSG beat you in the champions league final
- When the regen you've been developing for years now randomly has the trait "dreads playing in big matches"
- When you haven’t tied your 5* wonderkid down to a long term contract and PSG swoop in and steal him
- Perfect start lads.
- Oh do they now?
- It might be hard to develop if you're hunger striking, though...
- I bet he is worshipped back in Africa...
- Excuse me?
- When you are not in the squad's group chat
- He's my best player but 13 times!
- What do you get when you’re drawing 0-0 and a highlight comes up in the 89th minute?
- sure glad this game didn't mean anything!
- A very mixed day, apparantly
- Crystal Palace without Zaha
- I don't think he's living up to the name...
- I'm glad I didn't sign this guy for 10 mil when I had the chance
- First time seeing goal line technology showing a goal in one of my games.
- I think this is the best player I’ve hand on FM in recent memory, look how good he is and he’s continuously improving at only 23!
- Officially my greatest performance as manager
- Had a small scream of joy when I got this message out of nowhere. Napoli somehow miss out on Cl, putting my 8th place Palermo in the EL.
- A Magical European Night(TM) at Anfield

Posted: 23 May 2019 06:37 PM PDT In my current save, I'm doing a journeyman series in 2024/25. Crystal Palace have just been relegated to League One so I'm going to write a little story about what happened. I've done nothing to them. It's just an interesting thing I've seen happening and I've just noticed as I've gotten promoted with Shrewsbury. In 18/19, all was normal. They got 16th. They sold Mamadou Sakho to Monaco for £26m. In 19/20, they sold Zaha in July 2019 for £53 million to Manchester City. In that transfer window, they also sold Benteke to Stoke, Joel Ward to Fulham and van Aanholt leading to a final total of £73 million including Zaha. To replace this, they loaned in Harry Wilson, bought Albian Ajeti from Basel for £10.25 million, Marc Albrighton for £11 million and a few others totalling £61 million. Looking at the signings they made, you wouldn't think they would be enough to replace star player Wilfred Zaha and you'd be right as they were 19th with 25 points. 5 less than Leeds in 18th and 9 off 17th in Huddersfield and 7 ahead of Preston. So, for 20/21, they had a new owner joining in January with a Consortium. With the £41 million in parachute payments, they were able to push to 3rd in the Championship table. Losing to Middlesborough 5-3 on aggregate in the semi-finals. To do this, they got some decent players. Stuart Armstrong for £13.5 million (their only paid for player) and Romeu on loan isn't a bad group of players from Southampton. Bernard and Schar also joining on loan and Patrick Roberts, Clinton N'jie joining on frees. Not bad signings despite seemingly little in the bank based on their transfer dealings. However, they sold players for a total of £40.5 million with Max Meyer joining Leverkusen for £20.5m, Boyata (signed on a free the previous season) for £10.5m to Wolves with players like Tomkins, McArthur, Kouyate, Hennessey and Schlupp leaving. The next season (21/22 if you're not counting yourself), their second on parachute payments, they bought Schar for £12.75m from Newcastle after having him on loan, Danijel Subasic on a free, Che Adams for £2.2m from Fulham and a few others totalling £24.5m. However, they continued to sell but for lower prices this season with Clinton N'jie joining Gent, Townsend joining Cagliari, Wan-Bissaka joining Southampton and Albrighton joining Watford. None of these surpassing £10m with Wan-Bissaka only generating £9m coming to a total of £27.5m. This resulted in a 10th placed finish despite being only 5 points off the playoffs on 74 points. Their final season on parachute payments in 22/23 was a continuation of the first on the transfer front. However, this time, they hadn't spent anything above £5 million on a single player with the highest being Jonjo Shelvey on £4.9 million. They hadn't signed any potential stars in the free agents market this season as well. Maybe leading to a potential wage budget issue as well. However, they still made £43m in player sales with Christian Pavon (signed on a free in the 19/20 season) signing for Manchester United for £19m. They also sold Miguel Baeza (also signed on a free) for £13.75m to Huddersfield. They stabilised in terms of positioning with a 9th place. However, their points tally dropped to 68. A repeat of last season would have gotten them 6th on goal difference. Their first season without any parachute payments is 23/24 and it shows. With them spending nothing. Relying on loans and free transfers completely. Their star for the season is arguably Mason Greenwood, loan from Manchester United, scoring 20 goals in 46 games. You may think they had sold some players as done in previous seasons. Nope. A total of £475,000. All bar £25,000 of that was selling Milan Badelj to Istanbul Basaksehir. The previous season, they bought him from Lazio for £1.6m. Despite this, they were still 11th. Positionally, stable. But again, their points tally dropped to 64. At this point, you'd be wondering why I'm discussing this as it seems like they're just a mid-table championship side reducing costs. And you'd be right at the moment. So. 2024/2025. You know what happened because I said at the top. Relegation on 46 points. Historically, that could have gotten them 18th at best. Only one other team had been relegated with a better record. But that's the stage they're at now. I had just promoted to go the other way with Shrewsbury Town and asked in a press conference if I'd take the Palace job. I said no and looking deeper into the state of Crystal Palace, I can definitely stand by my decision. Anyway, what did Palace do in the transfer window? More than they did the previous season. Spending a mammoth £175,000 to sign a player who hasn't played for the first team. Apart from that, loans and one free. A player released by Monaco who played for 13 times. They made £8.25m in player sales. Selling Honduran Jonathan Rubio for £5m to Bournemouth after signing him in July 2022 from Huesca for £1.8m. He had gone on loan the previous season after playing 34 Championship games. Also selling a young player to Leicester and getting him back on loan to play 8 times. Chiriches, who signed in January 2020, played 21 games up to that point before selling him to Cyprus for £220k. Could you argue that Chiriches was the reason they went down? No. Looking at their past positions, they were in the bottom 2 for most of November before rising to 19th by mid-December. That would be their highest position. They were there for two games and fell off before returning there after a good January then February with 2 losses in 10 games from New Year's Day until the first game in March before losing to Reading. However, bouncing back with a win against QPR before a scoreless draw with Sheffield United. However, from there, they dropped to 6 losses in 8 including a draw against Millwall and a win against Walsall. However, the final blow came away to Rotherham in the penultimate day where they had to win or draw to have a chance. It was a winner takes all game and Rotherham did by a single goal. Rotherham were 21st. 4 points ahead of former Premier League side Crystal Palace and safe. They both lost on the final day regardless. Looking into their finances through the in-game editor, I saw a negative bank balance of £20m. However, the wages their squad is on tells the rest of the story. Many of these players on Premier League wages with Ajeti stealing a living at £105,000 per week. Riedewald and Schar with wages of £58,000 and £57,000 each. Other players on wages in the £30,000s per week. That might explain, at least, part of their downfall. Looking at the transfer centre, I can see Riedewald joining AEK Athens in the summer. I don't know who they can release. But if I had to do that job, Ajeti and Schar would be out of the club ASAP. [link] [comments] | ||
