Baby steps, but no one said it will be an easy climb. Posted: 09 Mar 2019 01:35 PM PST Barrow-in-Furness was a pain in the rectum to move to. I had to buy a used Toyota Yaris to get there, can you believe that absolute red tin can had 140 thousand mileage? Absolutely mental, but I made about 20 pounds of profit in re-selling the car later. I know, I'm the next Daniel Levy, thanks. Anyway, I arrived at Barrow, and, having analyzed the squad, decided that the same tactic I used at Worcester , albeit expanded, will be the best pick to get this team to the top of the league. We had 2 strikers great for the league, in Andy Cook and Lewis Guy, and a decent midfield and defence. Barrow's finances are also much better, so I was easily able to get funding to study for the National B badge. We started pre-season off very strongly, with a resolute 2-0 win over League 2 side Carlisle United, and then only played amateur and lower reputation clubs to get morale up before the season starts. The results were: 4-2 against Bootle, 5-1 against Holker OB, 2-1 against Penmaenmawr and 2-0 against Celtic Nation. A fantastic start to the season, with a 5-0 trouncing of Nuneaton on the opening day (fun fact: they were predicted to finish first, with us in second), a convincing 3-0 win over Stockport and a 2-1 win away at Tamworth catapulted our confidence, though we were brought right down to earth following a frustrating 2-2 draw away at Gloucester. We responded with a 5-2 win over newly-promoted Marine, and then were held to a 1-1 draw and 0-0 draw by Chorley and Oxford City respectively. We won the 3 remaining league games that September (including a solid 2-0 win over Worcester), and faced Stourbridge in the FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round. In what was a mix of inept attacking play, me playing a couple youngsters and Stourbridge being plain clinical, we were beaten 2-0 in what would undoubtedly prove to be the lowest point of our season. I was fuming, but I thought of that as an opportunity to focus 100% on the league. We followed that match up with a goalless draw at home to 1st placed Harrogate - a scoreline I was ultimately happy with, even though I shouldn't've been. We were really inconsistent with scoring goals throughout the rest of October, winning 4-1 over Bradford Park Avenue, then drawing 0-0 against Brackley, then beating Leamington 4-2, then drawing to Leamington... The same theme of inconsistent, yet not losing games was threatening to become a regularity in November, which we started with a 0-0 draw away at Solihull Moors, but we managed to win the remaining 3 league games in October, scoring 7 and conceding 1, and then win against Leamington in the FA Trophy 3rd Qualification Round. At this point, we were 19 games unbeaten in the league, and even though over a third of those 19 games were draws (12 wins, 7 draws), squad confidence was through the roof, and my nervousness about possibly doing an unbeaten league run raising by the day. We started off December with a shaky 0-0 draw against newly-promoted Blyth Spartans, then won 1-0 against Boston United, and three days later playing possibly the most emotionally taxing match of that season, a 9-goal haul against Nuneaton. We started the match really well, scoring straight from kick-off via Lewis Guy. Then, after some back and forth chances, Danny Whitehead equalized for Nuneaton. Second half, and following a double from Andy Cook in the 55th and 56th minute- including possibly one of the worst goals I have ever seen, a header from the edge of the area, that just rolled itself on the ground and through the legs of the goalkeeper, pure sunday league beauty - we were 3-1 up. In the 61st minute, it was 3-2 via Ellis Harrison, then 3 minutes later Josh Brimacombe-Wiard made it 4-2. Evan Galvin made it 4-3 in the 72nd minute, before Danny-bloody-Whitehead equalized for Nuneaton in the 84th minute. I was fuming and shouted at the team from the touchline, Conte-style. And it had results, because 2 minutes later James Derbyshire gave us the lead and sealed a breath-taking 5-4 victory. Players were still a tad bit jittery in the following game, a 3-2 win over Guiseley, courtesy of a Johnny Gorman hat-trick. We then drew 2-2 with Stockport on Boxing Day, and, having celebrated a productive 2015 with more than a few pints at The Furness Railway, we drew 3-3 with Marine in our first match of the new year. Four days later, we got a powerful wake-up call, as we got convincingly beaten 3-0 by Braintree in the FA Trophy 2nd Round, sending us out of the competition. Not to worry - I thought - the league is the most important anyway. A brace from Gorman inspires another 3-2 win, this time over Tamworth, and it was our 25th league game unbeaten. What followed was a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Chorley, where due to a combination of a Jake Skelton red card and many injuries, we were reduced to 9 men and just couldn't keep it level. It was a really sad evening - everything seemed to go against us, even though we threatened Chorley multiple times, even reduced to 9 men - we just couldn't pull through. I was keen on forgetting that match as fast as possible, so I fined Skelton 2 weeks wages, set him for release and moved on. The strength of our mentality showed, as we won the following game 3-0, and produced a resilient defensive display to see off the challenge of Oxford City with a 2-1 win. We then met Worcester in the league, and put 2 past them, albeit with Simon Grand being a liability and someone who, in the heat of the moment, forgot where he is and went to buy a hotdog, we conceded 3 and I was embarrassed by my former club, picking up the second defeat of the season. Following that defeat, one that really pissed me off, our formed dipped quite significantly. We still ground out results, winning 2-1 over Redditch, drawing 0-0 with Telford United, winning 1-0 over Harrogate, 4-1 over Bradford Park Avenue, and 1-0 over Brackley. For the final 8 games, our form pretty much flatlined, and we went on an embarrassing streak of miserable form, winning once, then losing twice, then winning twice and, once we were mathematically confirmed champions, losing our final three games, all by one goal. I ended the season in a poor mood, although reflecting back, it was a very decent season anyway. We were 10 points ahead in the league, scored 80 goals, 15 more than second best Oxford City, and conceded 41, only one more than Chorley, who conceded the least, at 40. Our prediction for next season is toward the lower half of the table, and that is the official board expectation, though it's always with me that I expect more. After a short break I was optimistic, heading into the transfer window with enough wage budget to bolster the side. How will Barrow fare in the fifth division of English football after a 3 year absence? Find out next time! [link] [comments]

Posted: 09 Mar 2019 11:21 AM PST First time FM. Picked Shamrock Rovers, I don't even know how good they are, I just like the name and logo. Watch a few YouTube videos and I'm off. I look at my team, but of course I don't really know what I'm doing. Bunch of determined Irish boys with a good work-rate, so I figure I'll press non-stop and see what happens. Finish up the tactic and I think it's OP because I'm steamrolling everyone. I'm 10 points up in the league before I know what's going on. Worrying though, the Finances. I'm on my wage budget (1.2M) but we're losing money every month. Gonna lose almost a mill this year. So what's the deal with that? We're just... fine with that? How am I going to bring this club to Europe if I can't pay the electric? Well I've got this kid Trevor Clarke that the English sides want. His value is $405k and I sell him for $900k to Southampton. Seems good, at least we'll break even this year. 25% sell-on for the future. Also I've got a bunch of other players with $2-400k value, so I'll be fine.... just need to churn the roster a bit. Next step, I need bodies. I'm in every cup so I'm playing a game every 3-4 days. Also, this selling players thing seems great. I sign some guys for free, and their value is immediately $60k... great! Sign some more! Anyone my scouts can find with a pulse and a couple black stars gets a contract. I put the transfer income into the wage budget and still go another $100k over... I figure I'm gonna bring in some trophies so the owner will let me slide. Also I can just sell more dudes when I need to (infintie ROI is best ROI). Heading to the end of 2018. I'm still stomping. League is a walk. Euro Cup I get a bit unlucky, draw Russian Premier side FC Ufa in the second round. Their league is ranked 5th or 6th, mine is in the 50s. 7-7 aggregate but we lose on away goals. Disappointing but I'm proud We went toe to toe with the real professionals and stayed Positive for 180 minutes. We'll have to settle for an Irish treble. Not bad for my first season. Owner is happy but starts giving me shit about the finances. Ok fine, I can sell some players at the Winter window right? Right? Right? I've been duped. I list some players, nothing. Good ones too. My striker scored 28 goals and no one wants him? What does this value thing mean anyway? I've got kids with $90k value and prospect wages and I can't give them away, just to save the salary. I guess you FM vets just know this right? Value doesn't mean that much if there's no market. I guess you have to be a good enough prospect for a top league otherwise you aren't worth shit. Am I missing something? Is there a way to offload the boys I can't use? Anyway, I end up loaning out about 10 of them. Helps a bit with the wages but I'm still stuck. I've got a bunch more kids I want to sign but I can't. Maybe it'll sort in 2019. [link] [comments]
