When FM makes you think about ethics! (National manager and club manager) Posted: 13 Mar 2019 08:34 AM PDT So on my current "Non-league to legend," type save on the mobile version I got asked to be the national manager for Ghana a month into my second season. This is a Pisa save, won Serie C in first season. As I go to the first games I would manage as Ghana I started pulling up the Ghanians I could grab for the team. What do I see? THREE players from the team I was to play next in Serie B competition! They went all in for Ghana boys it seems haha. I grabbed all three, played them 90 minutes on high tempo, and proceeded to trounce my opponent in Serie B two days later (I won the Ghana friendly too so I wasn't super throwing that just to win a league match). So it got me thinking, in the real world, would that not be a CRAZY conflict of interest? I know there have been managers of club and national in the past, but how would something like that even be handled? I definitely felt dirty doing it in a virtual world lol. [link] [comments]
Gibraltar gains a foothold in Europe Posted: 13 Mar 2019 11:16 AM PDT Some might have seen my earlier post on a fairy tale continental campaign with Cannons that has led to a sharp increase in Gibraltar's international stature, this is a follow up on that post. The date is September 2, 2030 and the Cannons just got knocked out in the playoff round of the Eurocup by Brøndbyernes Idrætsforening, but later more about that. The previous entry left of with the summer of 2026 after Cannons was put back on solid ground by Levante which included a very impressive 1-1 home draw. The fairy tale continental campaing saw a huge surge of the Cannons' international stature as they were recognized as the competition's biggest overachievers. The successful campaign has led to Gibraltar climbing to 37th position in the European Nation Club coefficient ranking and the country has managed to climb till 36th position in later years, guaranteeing the tiny football nation 4 continental tickets and, more importantly, corresponding prize money for many years to come. In the mean time the Faeroe Islands had a disastrous European Championship Qualifying campaign. The Cannons finished the '26/'27, '27/'28 and '28/'29 seasons all in third position in the Gibraltarian Premier Division. The '27/'28 season saw Cannons defeated in the first qualifying round of the Eurocup against ND Gorica from Slovenia and in the '28/'29 season against FK Sarajevo from Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the '29/'30 season The Cannons defeated Swiss Super League side FC Thun (2-3 victory in Switzerland, 1-2 defeat in Gibraltar) on aggregate goals before being knocked out in the second qualifying round by AS Aris Salonika from Greece (0-2 victory in Greece, 0-3 defeat in Gibraltar). The Premier Division saw a very exciting '27/'28 season and in the last day of the season the fresh champions were heavily beaten in a 7-0 defeat by the Cannons (I use nicknames to keep track of professionalism and ambition) . This heavy defeat for Europa FC at the end of the season together with a run of several successful seasons by the Cannons were the signs of revolution in Gibraltarian football and the arrival of a new order. Hitherto Europa FC and Lincoln Red Imps were absolutely hegemonic. It would not always be obvious in advance who would win the Premier Division (though usually it would be Lincoln Red Imps) and sometimes they might drop points to third teams, but the championship would typically between these two teams and by the end of the season there would always be a huge point gap between the rest of the competition. So at the beginning of the '28/'29 season the Cannons were predicted to finish in first position and their manager was given this task. The team started the season very ambitious and play throughout most of the season with a very attacking mindset in order to garner record amounts of goals and assists. Though this reckless strategy led to some large victories, it caused the Cannons to drop some points here and there. While the team outclassed both Europa FC and Lincoln Red Imps, these two teams remained very competitive throughout the competition as they dropped very few points against third teams. Ultimately this offensive approach was deemed too costly and halfway through the season the Cannons switched to a more cautious approach. The damage was already done however and ultimately the team finished in a third position. The team did manage to win their first Rock Cup and during the following preseason also their first Pepe Reyes Cup. The '29/'30 season saw the Cannons win their first Premier Division and second Rock Cup titles in addition to the aforementioned first Pepe Reyes Cup. Upon receiving £3.6 mln for winning the competition, chairman Liam Bonavia decided to finally turn the club professional and put the club up for sale (a buyer has still not been found though). This was also the moment that a decision to start a second expansion of the clubs training facilities was made. The club's change in professional status saw a sharp increase of the workload for the training staff as most training staff remained on amateur and non-contract contracts. The situation was solved by the release of a large number of old stars that were kept at the club to tutor younger players and the release of players that were unhappy with their first team chances. The summer of 2030 also saw the transfer of left defensive full-back Simon baker to Lincoln for a record transfer fee of £175k. Baker who was deemed a great talent that could potentially exceed and was only second to current left back Eric Onana had already spent two seasons on loan at Lincoln and was allowed to leave as it was thought that future transfers might ultimately mean that he would never reach the first team. Throughout the years the Gibraltrarian competition has considerably improved it's reputation, currently ranking 79th within Europe. This has also led to a significant increase in prize money, however it is quite top heavy. Together with prize money from continental competitions as well as sponsorship, gate receipts and other income, this probably means that the top 4 clubs can start fielding £1 mln+ budgets on an annual basis. Concomitant to Gibraltar's increase in reputation in international football was an increase of Gibraltar's national team's stature. The national team has changed throughout the years though. In earlier years the Gibraltarian national team was dominated by Cannons players. At its height (in early 2028) 41 Gibraltarian national team players (including U21 and U19 teams) were trained at Cannons. As the Cannons started to rely more and more on foreign talent and most young players quickly left the club again after the intake dates, Cannons importance seemingly started to drop. However, most young players deemed not good enough for Cannons are immediately snapped up by other teams and some ultimately reach the national team. Due to them leaving the club at a younger age they now often show up as being trained at other clubs. Furthermore, at the end of the '30/'31 season the first talents imported by Cannons will be eligible for the national team and some of them will be officially club trained at Cannons. At present Cannons are still the leading producers of talent for top flight clubs with 48 players in the premier division being trained at the Cannons. Cannons start the '30/'31 season with an interesting European campaign. They start in the second qualifying round of the Champions Cup with 3-1 and 3-2 wins against Slovenian side NK Maribor. In the next round they're defeated 3-1 and 4-1 by FC Basel from Switzerland. Drawing an upset here would have been immensely beneficial as the next round has large amounts of prize money, but losing here meant qualification for the Euro Cup playoff, which is not too bad either. In the Euro Cup playoff Cannons manage to draw 1-1 at home against Brøndbyernes Idrætsforening but in Denmark they're defeated by 2-0. Cannons narrowly miss large prizes and group stages, but they have the ambition to reach the group stage of an international competition within the next five years. Not only Cannons are successful in Europe, Lincoln manage to beat Prestatyn Town from Wales 2-0, both at home and away, making them the first Gibraltarian side other than Cannons to ever win a fixture in the Euro Cup. They then lose twice from Videoton (I love that name) from Hungary, though from now on it can no longer be said that drawing a team from Gibraltar means an easy win. Gibraltar are becoming a real force and they finally have managed to gain a foothold in European football. [link] [comments]
