Sacked after 25 Years confused what to do next

Welp I started this save planning on doing a journeyman save but just got attached to the club after winning the league in my first yearAfter that, the plan was simply to bring the champions league to Spennymoor .

Unfortunately, i failed all I could win was the Europa League and the premier league just went on a massive bad patch after winning the league

we were 15th still in the champions league but pretty much screwed any chance of qualifying for Europe

but this is not the end I will take over some other club maybe in England, maybe in a non top 5 leagues but i will return to Spennymoor to win the champions league someday

now we contemplate the available jobs

I attached the premier league and champions league winners and wouldn't mind taking more screenshots from my world if anyone interested

Jonny Jacobs and Gabriel Ogunseri were with me from league 2 to the premier league

Adam Mcdermott scored like 40+ goals 2 years and didn't win the golden boot in either one of em since apparently a dude scored 65 goals.

David Hicks and Benedick Jansen were both Academy Graduates till with the club Hicks is actually the vice captain now

edit :(ok not confused just observing options i don't wanna readd all the pics after changing title i only realized the title after posting :()

Some more screenshots I'll add more once I get home if ppl wanna see em

(I broke the preview pls help)

Can someone tell me what my board is smoking?

This is Sparta! - Sparta Rotterdam save with a twist FM22

    Posted: 27 Feb 2022 02:06 PM PST

This is Sparta! - Sparta Rotterdam save with a twist FM22

I have played FM for over 10 years now, but it is only in the last 3/4 editions that I have really got deep and invested in saves, most notably with Genoa (FM20), and in with Montpellier/Bayer Leverkusen (FM21).

This is the first year where I have struggled to really get invested with a save or team, and I wanted to challenge myself.

I decided that I would start a save with Sparta Rotterdam (currently bottom of the Eredivise irl), but with a twist. I could only sign players who were Dutch, or had a Dutch citizenship!

I chose Sparta Rotterdam for a few reasons.

    1. They are the oldest team in the Netherlands (est. 1888)
    2. The board prefer the sign Dutch/Domestic talent
    3. Strong youth facilities
    4. And the added bonus that they play in the same colours as Athletic Bilbao who also are only allowed to sign players from their own country/region

    Transfers Season 1

So, we began the clear out of our non-Dutch assets and the below players vacated Het Kasteel (The Castle).

    Mario Engels - Charleroi - £1m

    Lennart Thy - Dinamo Moscow - £1m

    Michaël Heylen - AA Gent - £400k

Vito van Crooij - PEC Zwolle - £675k

    Michael Pinto - De Graafschap - £575k

    Abdou Harroui - £2.6m - Sassuolo (pre-arranged)

    Laurent Jans - Huesca - £1.3m

Maduka Okoye - Loan to Anderlecht (no one would make an offer, and board would not let me release)

So with some money raised I began to search for some homegrown replacements. My board decided that they will take 65% of any transfer fees I received, which was really appreciated. This left me with around £1.7m, and I really had to spend a lot of time trying to find the right players and in the end had to take a few punts.

I was struggling to find players who were:

    1. Good enough to play at Eredivise standard
    2. Actually interested in joining,
    3. Not trying to exhort me of Liberia's deficit (I am looking at you Nigel De Jong)
    4. If I did manage to get someone who ticked the above boxes, that they not poached by a larger reputation club

I managed to get the below players in:

Mats Knoester from Heracles - £725k

Ricardo Van Rhijn - Karlsruher - loan

Pelle Van Amersfoort (PVA)- Cracovia - £210k

    John Verkoek - Hansa Rostock - £215k

    Robin Buwalda - IFK Mariehamn - £31k

Peer Koopmeiners - AZ - Loan

    1st Season Expectations and Ambitions

The board expected us to finish somewhere in the middle of the table and to give a good account of ourselves in the Dutch Cup. I was a bit worried about this as our best players were non-Dutch and I would have to hope my new signings could hit the ground running. I would try to play attractive football against teams who were a similar standard to me, and park the bus against the big 3. Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord

I would be giving some youngsters an opportunity in the first team, most notably 6'5 18 year old Emanuel Emegha who looked good enough to start most games and Sven Mijnans who attributes were strong enough to be one of the first names on the team sheet.

The aim for me was to avoid relegation and maybe finish mid table, but to hope for an easier run to the later stages of the Dutch Cup in order to gain some extra income.

    August 21 - October 21

We start the season with 3 straight draws in August. John Verhoek and Emanuel Emegha score in both of their first 2 games. Not an awful start, as we get used to a new narrow 4-1-2-1-2 formation but definitely still room for improvement

Verhoek continues his great form, and new signing Pelle Van Amersfoort (PVA) also gets his first goals for the club as we steamroll through September winning all 4 of our games notching up 10 goals in the process. Star player and local boy Sven Mijnans also grabs his first goals of the season. We finish September high-flying in 4th position with 15 points.

However, after an admittedly easier start the season our form slows down and we are handed our first defeat against a strong PSV side. We give a good account of ourselves and Emegha continues his strong goalscoring start to the season. We then draw 1-1 against FC Groningen and stumble past a weak RKC side 1-0, before dominating a weak amateur side in the Dutch Cup. Youngster Mohammed Tahiri scores his 1st goal for the club 1 minute into the game, and gets his second 11 minutes later. We cruise to a 4-2 win with a youthful side, however concede 2 goals from 2 shots shots faced and I criticise my young defenders for their lapses in concentration.

Our last game of the month sees us face fierce rivals Feyenoord welcoming them to Het Kasteel. The teams are level at half time, however Feyenoord score an early goal in the second half and we are kept under intense pressure. They double their lead on 67 minutes, and I decide to change to an attacking mentality. Mohammed Osman gives us a glimmer of hope at 82 minutes with a 35 year volley from a corner that even Paul Scholes would be proud of, however our hopes are buried when Bryan Linssen scores Feyenoord's 3rd at 89 minutes. Substitute PVA scores a consolation goal for us on 90+2 minutes, however the referee blows up straight after and we leave with 0 points.

We gave it a good go, but we were lucky to score 2 goals. Putting it nicely, we got absolutely battered and every extended highlight that came on the screen led to a last ditch block or save from either one of my defenders, or Benjamin Van Leer in goal. We have a long way to go to bridge the gap to the top teams, but it was nice to grab a few goals against a rival and Osman's goal was an absolute banger.

We drop to a more realistic and modest 8th position, and are some of our weaknesses have been highlighted by playing against stronger opposition but there is still reason to be optimistic about the rest of the season as we have played well against the similar standard teams. Players such as Verhoek and PVA have slotted in well to the team, and don't look out of their depth playing in the Eredivise, while youngsters such as Emegha and Mijnans have lead the team and scored some important goals.

    https://preview.redd.it/nfwjt2704gk81.png?width=1303&format=png&auto=webp&s=4d93680e0d1f13ca5a1831f19349ec9bbbc2a692

    November 21 - December 21

November started with an away day to Willem ll, and we left with a point following a 1-1 draw being unlucky to take all 3 points. Our luck returned with a dominating 3-0 home win against FC Twente, with Verhoek and Mijnans scoring to bring us back to domestic winning ways.

Next followed our toughest test so far with the visit of Ajax. A real-life David vs Goliath.

Dusan Tadic puts Ajax 1-0 up within 5 minutes, and we immediately begin to realise that it could be a long night. Emanuel Emegha brings us level 11 minutes later with a long ball over the top, and hope is restored within the stadium. That hope soon diminishes when Steven Berghuis scores straight from kick off and reinstates Ajax's lead. I want to remind you that Ajax's wage bill exceeds £50m, while our wage bill is mere £2.1m.

But, we are giving it a good go and Emegha brings us level once again with an exact replica of his first goal. I have been really impressed with his transition to top-level football, and he is a real handful for the likes of Daley Blind to deal with with his 6'5 height, and 16 acceleration. We almost get to half time, before Antony goes 1v1 with a ball over the top. Aaron Meijers does well to catch up with him, but fouls him in the box. Maybe the referee feels sympathetic for us, as he only shows Aaron a yellow card, but Tadic slots the penalty away, and we go into the break 3-2 down.

The second half kicks off, and Berghuis scores almost immediately however the VAR gods are on our side as it ruled out for the slightests of offside. We are still giving it a good go, and Andre Onana has had to make a few good saves. Adil Auassar receives the ball in the centre of the pitch and slots a ball that slices through the Ajax defence leaving Emegha 1v1 against Onana. Emegha shoots right at Onana, another chance missed. The ball falls to Jurriën Timber who carelessly clears the ball straight to Auassar who takes 3 touches before smashing the ball into the top corner. Rejoice! Could we take some points from the Amsterdam giants?

The answer is no. No we could not. The game seemed to be phasing out, and for a second I thought we were about to take a point. That was until Tadic took a chance and had a shot from 35 yards. Van Leer spills and ex West Ham man Sebastian Haller is there to tap in the rebound to break our hearts. Ajax leave Rotterdam with 3 points, and we go home empty handed.

We enter December with an away day to AZ, claiming a 2-1 win against a significantly stronger team. Emanuel Emegha then saves our blushes with a 92nd minute equaliser against sc Heerenveen, in a game where we completely dominate. We then cruise 4-0 away in the Dutch Cup against another amateur squad. That wish for an easy run was being fulfilled so far. Two home games then follow, and we take all 6 points. We then beat Vitesse 3-1 in an even matched game, and Emegha continues his great goalscoring form. That's 10 in all comps so far this season. We then come from a goal down to score twice in 10 minutes to take a 2-1 win against RKC Waalwijk thanks to Mohammed Osman and Ricardo Van Rhijn which closes 2021 and leaves us in 6th place.

To makes things better, we also receive our youth intake report and I am excited to see that we have managed to catch a few very good homegrown players which will hopefully aid our Dutch challenge..

    January 22 - March 22

Not much really happened in the January transfer window. I managed to bring in 34 year old Michael de Leeuw from FC Groningen for £24k to provide some competition for my forwards, and give me the opportunity to rest the ever present Verhoek and Emegha. Vito van Crooij left for PEC Zwolle which raised £675k for the club.

We came back from the winter break with a 2-2 draw away at SC Cambuur, followed by a 1-0 loss against second tier side NAC Breda. Our luck against lower tier sides had clearly ran out, but at least we could now fully focus on success in the Eredivise. I decided to trigger a 1 year extention in Emegha's contract, due to interest from Atalanta and to try and increase his transfer value incase he decided he wanted to move to a 'bigger club'.

Next came the visit of FC Utrecht. We hadn't started the new year as well as we had finished 2021 and I wanted us to put an end to that run of form. We stumble to a 1-1 draw, with our equaliser coming curtesy of an almost comical own goal by ex-Swansea defender Mike Van Der Hoorn. The ex-Swansea defender passes to ball beyond Maarten Paes under no pressure in the 95th minute, and we manage to steal a point in a game we massively under-performed in again.

We had now dropped to 9th in the league table, and the media has began asking questions of my tactical style. I thought this was quite harsh to be honest, as we were still in a relatively strong position and over-performing our seasonal aims. We were still only 5 points off 4th place and the prospect of European football at Het Kasteel next season.

The Rotterdam derby at Feyenoord was our next fixture. Not the greatest fixture to have when you are out of form, and starting to question your players and your own tactics. I'd love to say we turned it around, but we struggled to maintain possession and got completely dominated in a 2-0 loss. I think it was time to make some changes to our tactics and play a little more conservatively as our leaky defence was conceding goals frequently, and it seems like the goals had dried up down the other end a lot.

It appears my tactical adjustments had worked as we beat Willem II 2-0, before an underwhelming 2-2 draw against Fortuna Sittard and another late equaliser from Emanuel Emegha required to save our blushes. We then welcomed PSV to Rotterdam, and absolutely punished them 3-0 with 2 goals from Emegha, and another from John Verhoek. This was a really pivotal moment as it was the first scalp I had claimed from one of the big 3 teams, and we completely dominated all 90 minutes to finish February one a high and rise to 6th position. Could we get ourselves into contention for European football in an unlikely first attempt with the new transfer strategy?

We rode into March full of confidence, and continued our revived form with a 2-0 away win against Vitesse, followed by a 3-1 win at home against GA Eagles. It felt like we had turned the corner, and we continued our winning streak with a 2-1 away win at NEC Nijmegen. Emegha had continued to score and had a strong month, with PVA also popped up with a few goals and assists. He had really felt like a coup for just over £200k. This also meant we had jumped into 4th position with a 2 point lead over FC Utrecht going into the last 7 games. Could we keep ourselves into contention for European football in an unlikely first attempt with the new transfer strategy?

    April 22 - May 22 - The conclusion.

It had already been a successful season, I was genuinely worried that we would be a in a relegation battle, having had to sell our best players at the beginning of the season. But here we were.

To make things better, I was now able to view the players we had attracted via our annual youth intake and was very excited to see a certain Guus Hofstede. I have played football manager for a long time and I have never signed a player this good in a youth intake. He is almost first team standard at 15 years old. I can't wait to see how he develops.

    https://preview.redd.it/jc1ttn4y5gk81.jpg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8cd9274e35f0ab8df961ec1e9b2ecf9869bd8e40

April started with a home game against sc Heerenveen, and we faulter to a 2-1 loss. Not the start we had wanted to our season run in and especially as we had an away trip to Ajax next. I wrote this game off and tried to set up in a catenaccio formation and hope to God that we could somehow leave with a point. This failed within 10 minutes, and Ajax were 3-0 up at HT. They added a 4th on 60 minutes, before PVA scored a consolation goal on 85 minutes. 4-1 was a generous score line. Next up was another away game against FC Twente. Some might say a more realistic opponent to try and get a win against. PVA scores within 4 minutes, however the game ends 4-1 to Twente and we drop to 6th position. We had 4 games to make up 3 points to FC Utrecht. The final game of April was at home against AZ, and we really had to win here to keep ourselves in the fight to finish 4th especially as Utrecht were at home against RKC Waalwijk. We scrape a 2-1 win against the run of play, and Utrecht are held 1-1. The dream was still alive.

3 games remained, and we needed a bit of luck but I was still confident we could grasp some European football for next season. Our remaining fixtures were FC Groningen (A), PEC Zwolle (H) and Heracles (A). We were held 1-1 by Groningen, in a frustrating game. Luckily Utrecht lose and we remain a point behind with 2 games to go. Zwolle were fighting for their life in a relegation battle, and we edge out a 3-2 win. It looked like the game would fizz out into a 2-2 draw, before PVA scores a 92 minute winner from a mazy run from the left before calming placing a finish into the bottom right corner. The dream was alive and kicking and to make it better Utrecht lost which gave us a 2 point lead going into the last game.

Like Zwolle, Heracles were also in a relegation battle so we knew it was going to be a tough game and we gave them a bit of respect and tried to control possession to keep the game at our own pace. Sven Mijnans scores in the 21st minute to put us 1-0 up. We are now in the driving seat, and again try to play to a low tempo to keep the ball and not make any mistakes. Emegha gives us a second on 58 minutes all but winning us the game. We then see out the game and it is complete. We have finished 4th and Het Kasteel will host at least one European game next season as we qualify for the new Europa Conference League qualifers.

    Seasonal Review

The aim before the season was to try an avoid relegation, and potentially challenge for the mid-table spots so I really can't believe that we managed to finish 4th. My signings settled quickly, and we dominated most games against the teams that finished below us. We played really entertaining football (maybe a little bit too entertaining, as we were pretty bad at the back all year and channelled our inner Leeds under Bielsa). Young players such as Emegha and Mijnans really stepped up and were the two standout performers through the whole season. I also managed to win Manager of the Season!

Next season, it would be great to challenge for the top 4 again and to see if we can manage to qualify for the Europa Conference group stages. I don't expect us to get past that stage, but the income we would garner and increased reputation we would receive would really help us attract better Dutch players and try to challenge the likes of Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord more consistently throughout the next few seasons.

    POTY - Emanuel Emegha

A fantastic first full season for the youngster who ended up with 20 goals in 34 league appearances. Let's hope he can continue that form into next season and doesn't have his head turned by interest from bigger clubs.

    https://preview.redd.it/tw05uqov5gk81.png?width=1740&format=png&auto=webp&s=9ca013d7cb1bb7b49c37ef43b85d2513e8ac17f8

Game of the Season - Sparta Rotterdam 3-0 PSV 27/02/22

A great performance and my first win over one of the big sides. Hopefully there will be many more to follow!

If you got this far, thank you for reading!

I have no idea if anyone will be interested but I thought it was an interesting save to play and I really enjoyed writing about it. I have read these kind of save stories for years on Reddit and FM fan sites so it was cool to write one myself!

I wrote this so I would have something else to focus on instead of work, but if you would like me to continue doing season reviews then let me know and I might considering doing it for next season :)

    Thanks again!

Does anyone else think that FM really undervalues experience/older players?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2022 10:45 PM PST

I reckon most people who play this game (including myself) run the meta of just hovering up a ton of wonderkids and winning everything with a squad full of players who have barely left their teens, and who would consider anyone over the age of 21/22 a dinosaur. While its's fun to develop young players, I think the game would be a lot more interesting if you needed to balance your team more than that.

It seems unrealstic to me when you look at the average age of a professional club in the premier league, for example, Arsenal currently having the youngest squad at an average age of 24, with the average of the entire league being around 26/27. The youngest team to ever win the premier league was Chealsea in 2005 at just over 24 years.

I think SI could do a much better job at making squad bulding a more interesting excercise by needing a more balanced squad. It just makes things a little dry when you are filling up the first team with 18 year olds over again.

It never seems like you are at an advantage for playing an established player with a lot of experience, over just fielding the latest teenage wonderkid. Perhaps make players peak later or take longer to reach their full potential (their mid twenties or so), or make mental attributes more impactful? Thoughts?

Am I good at thinking of saves and challenges?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2022 06:09 PM PST

I've been brainstorming some saves, most of them with some kind of restriction on the kind of player you can get. Some of them feel like good ideas to me, but idk, maybe I'm not as good as I think I am as I haven't actually tried most of them.

Weird names are my own creation.

If something is in italics it's optional/not required for the central point of the save, mostly my half-random club suggestions.

    Beast From The East

As a Russian team, never take off "Get Stuck In," use no players under 5'10", and win the Champions League.

    Invasion

I have no clue what nation's rules would permit this, but win a league with no players from the native nation. Alternately, win the CL with no European players. For a real challenge, win the Club World Cup with no players from Earth.

    Free and Green

As the manager of the Ireland national team and an Irish club team, make the CL group stage without any player from Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, or England, and make it to the World Cup without any player based in the United Kingdom.

    Gadsby

Using no players with an "e" in their first or last name, win the PL as Leicester.

    Rudderless Ship

Hate dynamics already? It's about to get worse. Unpopular opinion: Newgen/Regen faces are perfectly fine as they are in FM

I'm talking about an unmodded version of FM. I like seeing newgens as they are i.e not adding a facepack on them to make them look realistic or have real faces. I do not want to fall in love with a player, look them up then find out they are not real and just a line of code in a game. Let me look at the ugly pixel faces, I do not want them to look like Gary from down the street.

Fucked up the club's wage structure by offering Marquinhos 420K... Comes to a point in 2 years when Mejbri (21) is on 440K (by DOF contract renewal) ... Board is kind enough to increase the wage limit, but I want to put my foot down. What should I do?
