    Meeting an old “friend”

    Posted: 14 Jul 2021 04:35 PM PDT

I had nicknamed a scout "CHRILLARZ" - a Dane, named Christian Larsen. The reason for nicknaming him was that I could easily recognise him so that I could sack him when the opportunity arose. He absolutely sucked at scouting.

Low and behold three years later, I play a league match and in the pregame presser I'm asked about facing my old friend CHRILLARZ, who I'm shocked to find out is now a manager of another team in the Danish league. Looking at his profile he managed to secure promotion with another team being hired as their manager after I had sacked him. He then got the better top job after his successful outing.

Now I have a feud with my former scout turned manager (after I saw he didn't favour me). Lol, this game is just throwing random ass curveballs all the time.

    Olbia Calcio - A Journey from Serie C to Serie A & beyond - Part I (Blog)

    The Game: Football Manager 2020

    The Team: Olbia Calcio

    Starting Division: Italian Serie C/A

    The Goals:

    1. Stabilize the club into a first division perennial team, starting from the third division.
    2. Develop youngsters using the academy and integrate them into first team
    3. Majority local players if and when possible
    4. Make Sardinia proud and start a healthy rivalry with Cagliari

    Team Background:

Olbia Calcio is located on the northeast corner of the island of Sardinia in the city of Olbia, pop. 60,000. So far, no team besides regional capital club Cagliari has made it to the first division. As opposed to Italy's other big island, Sicily, which had at one point or another, 3 teams competing in Serie A (Messina, Palermo, and Catania). This needs to change, and I intend to do so. Olbia's highest position ever has been, according to FM 2020, 13th, which occured in 2018-2019 (last year, in the game time). Never in Serie B

    My Background:

(Real) I have some attachment to the island. I was not born there, but my family is from there, and my godparents and cousins live near to Olbia. I started out as realistically as possible. I was a Sunday-league footballer in my youth, playing central defensive midfielder and eventually right back. I was known for having good tactical understanding of the game, and a decent long distance shot. Then I moved on to coaching. I coached some little league teams, but never adult players. (Fiction) This is why I have given myself the lowest badge (besides starting with zero, which is unrealistic) in the form of the National C License.

    Starting attributes for my manager

I am not very good yet. This will not only make it hard to earn my keep, but also motivating my players and coaching them properly will be more difficult, however these are the things that make the game worthwhile. (Fiction) Alas, my uncle has some pull in the community and managed to get me this gig. After leading Olbia to their highest standings in recent history, Oscar Arnaldo Brevi had to step down from the helm due to personal reasons. He had made many moves already, so nobody else wanted the gig because there was little space to shape the team into their image. I will merge Brevi's image with my own, for now.

    Pre-Season 2019/2020 - Staff

My first priority is to evaluate the staff and make the appropriate cuts.

The first cut is made to the Director of Football. It is mostly to save money on a pointless position at this level, in my opinion. Additionally, I am the Director of Football. He was obsolete. This is my team now. I am Olbia Calcio.

I've terminated most of the staff contracts. Those that are left are myself, GK coach, Fitness coach, one scout that'll be replaced as soon as a better alternative presents itself, and a coach from the youth setup (who just signed and thus won't accept my offer to the first team staff) and the U-20 manager.

The U-18 manager will get a promotion to the first team, as he satisfies my 3-star minimum for staff. My ASSman remains, but will be shortly replaced by Mark Iuliano, who last assisted the manager of Serie A team Udinese. His experience will be priceless.

Following the cuts, I evaluate the pre-season friendly schedule and decide to make drastic modifications in order to adequately prepare my team as well as earn extra income.

    Pre-Season 2019/2020 - Transfers

My plan is to mainly use a 5-2-1-2 set up, as the team is lacking in wide players, as well as transfer funds. I'd also like to use a 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 as backup plans for when we go down or play a mobile front 3, so I'll have to dip into the free transfers bin. The biggest weakness in this team, besides lack of wide players, is in central defense.

The league regulations limit me to a maximum of 6 domestic-based players from Serie B and above. I have one spot open, which is quickly occupied by a defender from Palermo by the name of Andrea Accardi. He's a skilled CB that can double as RB. He will be my key RCB player, albeit short, he's quick. Might get caught out at the far post, but we'll see about that when we get there.

Jherson Vergara, a 25-year-old Colombian CB has been recruited to be my central pillar in defense. He is tall, he is strong, he is smart, he has the skill to get us out of any pinch, and he's on a free transfer.

My starting goalkeeper is good enough, but he is 33, so I brought in the promising Simone Cortinovis (23) on a free.

Emanuele Rovini (AMRCL), Matteo Brumat (RB/WB/M), and Vittorio Fabris (CM/CDM) round out my transfers, all freebies. Total of 6 players brought in, asides from those brought in by the previous leadership. Lots of team bonding necessary.

    SEASON START:

Our first challenge is two group games for the Lega Pro Coppa Italia – Against Bisceglie and Bari.

I clean house against Bisceglie. Two debutants score the goals. I dominate. First test passed for this young 28-year-old coach. I used a 4-3-3 for this one, which was a bit of a hail mary, because I hadn't utilized it much in pre-season. I wanted to test it out. It works, but some tweaks are necessary still. I had to move to a 3-5-1-2 towards the end of the match to secure the point. I also started Cortinovis to test him against competitive opposition. Passed with flying colors and might even become no.1 sooner than I thought. Eventually my loanee CB Andrea Accardi scored the death blow for a 2-0 win.

The match against Bari starts well enough with two goals within the first 20 minutes. Then horror. My main LWB is injured, my alternative gets a knock. I keep him on because…what am I gonna do otherwise? They pull one back in the subsequent freekick. Nothing cup Keeper Cortinovis could do really. We hit them on the counter. Bam! Foul inside the area, penalty for Olbia! Cocco steps up…keeper stops it! Heartbreak. Then they go level. All this within 40 minutes of play. Second half starts well enough. Couple of chances for me, but then my LWB fully breaks, so on comes the veteran Pisano who can play all positions from midfield downward, poorly. What can you do? The match ebbs and flows, but then suddenly a chaotic corner leads to one of my defenders gifting a shot on goal point blank. We fall 2-3 behind. So it ends. I try my hardest to change up the strikers, motivate the players, but nothing. Perhaps a change in formation was due. They kept a back three…perhaps I should have overloaded their defence with 3 forwards? Oh well, it was an unimportant competition, and saving a miracle promotion, I will be back next year.

Well, that's it for now. I don't want to write a match-by-match summary of the entire thing moving forward, so I will be back when there's noteworthy changes. For those who stuck around and read all of it, congratulations. I will try my hardest to be as brief as possible in the future. This set up was necessary, however.

This'll be my project for now. I've had multiple experiences managing clubs from nothing to everything, and I'm hoping I can do it without save scumming when the game gets tricky, as I've done in the past. I guess there's no way to hold me honest, you'll just have to trust me. Even more so, it'll be tricky while relying on academy and local players as much as possible. Will I turn down a superstar regen if he isn't Sardinian or Italian? Of course not. The spine, however, will be made up of as many local boys as possible.

This is Olbia Calcio. A la prossima.
