    The hardest save I've ever played - a diary of a broken man

    To preface this, I've been playing FM since FM06 and I've probably had 10k+ hours played. In FM20 I've been playing a journeyman save and won the league in almost every season I've played - with Cobh Ramblers I got promoted to the Irish first division on the first try, the same in the South Africa Premier League with Golden Arrows (the first season got promoted, the second won the Premier League), the same with Rostov in RPL, etc. Basically, the game was fun, but a bit too easy.

    Enter FM21. This time I've picked my local team in the Czech 4th tier, FK Caslav. The plan is to get them all the way up to the first division and hopefully win the Champions League one day. I thought I would probably win the first division within 7-8 seasons easily. Oh, how wrong I was.

    League structure

    The 4th tier is divided into 5 leagues called Divize A-F. There are 16 teams each, only the champion is promoted to the 3rd tier. Pretty straightforward.

    The 3rd tier is where things get spicy. There are two leagues, CFL and MSFL (divided by region, Czech Football League and Moravia-Silesia Football League). In the MSFL, there are 16 teams and only the champion is promoted to the 2nd tier.
    In the CFL though, there are 32 teams, so the league is divided into CFL A and CFL B. The catch is, only 1 team from CFL is promoted to the 2nd tier (!!). The winner of CFL A plays against the winner of CFL B in a promotion playoff final.

    Also, when there is a draw in a league game, it goes to penalties. Whoever wins gets the extra point (so drawing and winning on penalties nets you 2 points).

    2020/21 season - A promising start in Divize C

    These first few seasons will be quick as I don't remember them very well. It's been a few IRL months after all. We won 21 games out of 30, but it wasn't enough even to finish 2nd. I suspected it would take 2 seasons to get out of here, so getting 3rd place is more than acceptable.

    2021/22 season - Everything according to plan

    This looks closer than it actually was. We were in the pole position almost the whole season and had a 3 point lead going into the last game. We drew our game and got promoted to the 3rd tier on a second try!

    2022/23 season - A solid "one of the best of the rest" finish

    The board expectation was not to get relegated and we almost finished 4th. A very solid first season in the 3rd tier, I'd say. Worth noting is that Slavia Prague B steamrolled the league - silly me thought that this sight would be an exception, not a rule.

    2023/24 season - Fine-tuning our tactics

    We had a small injury crisis and a bad run of form right from the start, so I spend the rest of the season playing with the tactics and finding what suits us best. We went from a classic 4-4-2 to this 4-3-1-2 formation, which is our main one to this day. We had great success with the new formation, but alas, it was too late to challenge for anything.

    Next year will surely be our year.

    2024/25 season - Šampióóóni!

    We fucking did it, we won the league! I was ecstatic to get promoted to the 2nd tier, getting professional status, playing teams I actually know, .... wait what, what do you mean, "promotion playoff final"...?

    You see, I've never paid much attention to what happens after the league is over. As I described in the "League structure" part, there can only be one promoted team from CFL A and CFL B. We are champions of CFL A, but to get promoted we need to beat a winner of CFL B - Taborsko - in a two-legged promotion playoff.

    Taborsko got 72 points with exactly the same goal difference as us, 40. It was a tough battle. We lost the away tie 1-0, but we were winning 1-0 in the home match - until the 88th minute, when one of my defenders mistimed a tackle in our penalty box. We conceded from the penalty and drew 1-1. Well, onto the next season. Next year will surely be our year, right...?

    2025/26 season - Close race ends in heartbreak

    We were top of the league almost the whole season until we crumbled under pressure in the 27th game week. Playing in the same league as fucking Viktoria Zizkov (a professional side who eliminated Rangers from the UEFA Cup 20 years ago) and Slavia/Sparta Prague B teams when we ourselves are semi-professional side with "Obscure" reputation is... hard. We had to play against Serge Aurier, Stanislav Tecl, Ladislav Krejci, Ibrahim Traore, Petr Jiracek, Lukas Vacha, and other older experienced players who have dozens of international caps. Oh well, at least we have Metodej Malek, already a club legend. Malek's attributes and career stats. Next year will surely...

    2026/27 season - Desperation

    Again, we were top of the league for almost the whole season. Again, we crumbled under pressure. But this time we lost the league in a truly spectacular fashion. With two games to go, we were 4 points behind and Viktoria Zizkov didn't seem to be capable of losing. But they lost their game and we won! Going into the final game, we were 1 point behind. We were playing Bohemians B away, Viktoria Zizkov was playing Zapy (3rd team) away. If we ended up with the same amount of points, the first decider is a result between teams - we beat Viktoria 3-0 at home, they beat us 3-1 on their turf, so if we beat Bohemians B and they drew Zapy (and win on penalties to get 2 points - see the "League structure" section) we would be first! ...

    After 60 minutes, we are losing 1-0 and Viktoria Zizkov is winning 2-0. Hopeless.
    After 75 minutes, we are drawing 1-1, yet Viktoria Zizkov is still 2-0 up. We need Zapy to score 2 and us to score 1.
    After 93 minutes, we are still drawing 1-1, having too many chances to count. Viktoria Zizkov is now only 2-1 up. If Zapy doesn't score, it's all over anyway.
    Full time - we drew 1-1, it goes to penalties... And Zapy equalized in the 94th minute to make it 2-2!! If they beat Viktoria Zizkov on penalties and we beat Bohemians B on penalties, we win the league!!
    Well, Zapy really manages to beat Viktoria Zizkov on penalties, but we fuck it up and lose, getting only 1 point from the game, falling 1 point short.

    Getting 75 points almost always guarantees the title, but not this season. For comparison, in CFL B, Brozany wins with only 63 points. They will play Viktoria Zizkov in the promotion playoff final and I REALLY fucking hope Viktoria wins and fucks off to the 2nd tier.

    So we are going into our 8th season and we are still in the 3rd tier. I love and hate this save. It might take me 20 seasons to get promoted from this hell, but I will keep fighting. Maybe next year will be our year, after all.

    Is it just me or do DoFs never do any deals other than full upfront cash?

    So I decided to experiment with the DoF role in a few saves, bringing in Luis Campos for the role; he seems to fit the profile of a good DoF to a tee. When making offers for players however, he always offers the entire amount upfront. No bonuses, no installments, no future fees, nothing that can soften the immediate blow of the transfer. Is this intentional, specific to only Campos, or a bug? If so, is there a mod to fix it or something?
