2023 CL Final: Ronaldo vs. Messi in the final match for both

Ronaldo and Messi retired in 2023. Fittingly they went head to head in their last ever match in the Champions League Final. Ronaldo came out on top.

Students to Success - Cardiff Met Uni Challenge (FM 20). Part 1.

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 02:13 PM PST

Football Manager 2020 (or FM 20 for short) is one of my favourite games. I've sunk hours into it on the Touch version, taking clubs from bottom to top (or top to bottom), watching players rise through the ranks, only to be displaced by the clubs latest record signing, who then turns out to be terrible, is sent on loan for a couple of seasons, and then shipped on for much less than what I originally played. But in this series, I'm going to go to the lowest of the low - amateur teams. And what could be more amateur than Cardiff Metropolitan University FC, a part of the eponymous university's Athletic Union, comprised of uni students. Despite this, the team are a tough bunch, winning promotion to the Cymru Premier (Welsh Premier League) in 2016, and remaining there to this day. They've also had success in the cup - winning the Welsh Amateur Cup three times between 1968 and 1976, before winning the Welsh League Cup in 2019. The next year, Cardiff Met Uni reached the semi-finals of the Welsh Cup - more important and prestigious than the League Cup - before the tournament was called off because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Let us also not discount Cardiff Met's brief European adventure. In 2019 they finished 7th in the Cymru Premier, putting them into the playoffs with a Europa League qualifier at stake. After dispatching Caernarfon Town 3-2 in the semi-finals, they went the distance with Bala Town as the score finished 1-1 after extra-time. Penalties followed, and the students kept their cool to defeat Bala 3-1 on penalties and set up a Europa League preliminary round tie with Luxembourg outfit Progres Niederkorn over two legs. This drew the attention of the media, and soon Cardiff Met Uni were talked about in several prominent news outfits as the team of students who could play Manchester United at some point. Sadly, they never got that far. They lost 1-0 in Luxembourg, and despite a 2-1 victory in Cardiff they crashed out on away goals.

I, however, want to change that. Cardiff Met Uni are just the team that would be perfect for a Road To Glory save. I'm going to take them from mid-table regulars to contenders in Wales and Europe. The series has no direct end goals, but I've devised a list of things I wish to accomplish ranging from the simple to the not so simple. Here it is:

    1. Win the Welsh League Cup.
    2. Win the Welsh Cup.
    3. Win the Cymru Premier.
    4. Win a Europa League qualifier.
    5. Win a match in the Europa League group stage.
    6. Win the Europa League.
    7. Win a Champions League qualifier.
    8. Win a Champions League group stage match.
    9. Win a Champions League knockout match.
    10. Win the Champions League.

That is my top ten. However, the European objectives may be more difficult to accomplish from 2021-22 onwards. At present, Wales has 5 allocated European spots. The winners of the Cymru Premier go in to the Champions League qualifiers, second and third go into the Europa League qualifying rounds, as does the winner of the playoffs (contested between fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh placed). The winner of the Welsh Cup also gets a spot in the UEL. However, from season 3, the Europa Conference League, UEFA's latest tournament, will be introduced, meaning that the teams that previously qualified for the Europa League via the Cymru Premier will now qualify for the UECL (I believe the Welsh Cup winners still go into the UEL though). This will make it even harder to win the Europa League, as if it wasn't hard enough.

But I shall stop my ramblings here. This is r/footballmanagergames, after all, and you've come here to see Football Manager! Let us begin...

Fun fact: Cardiff Met Uni's nickname is the Archers.

    Welcome to Wales.

Let's have a look at the squad. It's nothing special really, as all of my players are on amateur contracts, meaning that they are not paid any salary. While this means I don't have to worry about a wage budget, it's not ideal, as it means that any team can approach my players and sign them for no money, and there would be nothing I could do about it. In fact, it will be impossible for us to turn pro, as we're a uni team. Still, I must make do with what I've got. Even if it means I have to win the Champions League with players that could be signed at any moment.

My first test is in Europe, as I'm playing the second leg of my preliminary round tie at home to Faroese side NSI (seemingly taking the place of Met Uni's real life opponent Progres Niederkorn). The first leg, which was played before I arrived, finished 1-1, and our away goal may prove crucial.

Before the game, I make my first signing - attacking midfielder Liam Edwards joins us from Cambrian and Clydach on an amateur deal. Oliver Davies, a goalkeeper and free agent, also joins the team.

As we begin the match, I am full of optimism. That is, until we concede inside three minutes from a set piece, canceling out our away goal and giving NSI a 2-1 aggregate lead. They manage to score another goal at 40 minutes when an intended cross somehow beats our keeper and goes in. I sigh. We are not having the best of luck.

With 15 minutes to go, we grab a goal back through substitute Harry Owen, but it's little more than a consolation. Ah well. Maybe we set our sights too high. I feel like we were a little unlucky to lose this game, as we had three times the amount of shots as NSI. If it wasn't for that freak goal in the first half we might have forced extra time, but c'est la vie.

After the UEL game, we have four preseason friendlies to navigate, and I sim them all using Touch's "Instant Result" feature. Without my assistance, the Archers beat Dulwich Hamlet 2-0, before sealing back to back victories against Welsh sides Cwmamman and West End. They close out pre-season by pulling off a 2-1 victory against League Two side Crawley Town. However, I won't be simulating the rest of the games this season.

Our next game is the Welsh League second round tie against Barry Town. I hope the team will do us proud, as Barry are expected to challenge for the league title (along with us of course) and I want to set down a marker. Not to mention, of course, that we're the cup holders.

Barry take the lead through an early penalty, but we are persistent, and keep harrying the opposition goal. We have a goal chalked off for offside, before striker Jordan Lam finally manages to squeeze a shot past the keeper and into the net. Met Uni park the bus for the rest of the 90 minutes. No extra time in the Welsh Cup, so we go straight to spot-kicks.

The first six penalties are all converted, until Liam Edwards pokes a tame effort into the Barry keeper's hands. Barry score their fourth penalty, and with the score at 4-3, it could not be tighter. Thankfully, we smash our fifth spot-kick into the bottom corner. Now all we have to do is keep Barry from scoring the tenth kick of the shootout and we're on to sudden death.

Robbie Patton steps up for Barry - and tucks in the bottom corner. We're out of the cup.

I'm devastated. Out of a possible three cup competitions, we've squandered two. Admittedly, winning the Europa League would have been a long shot, but I had hopes for the Welsh League Cup, especially as we were the holders and the board expected a semi-final finish. Now all we have left to play for is the Welsh Cup, and of course the league itself.

Still, we must put this behind us and move on! In the next part we'll be starting our campaign in the Cymru Premier, and look to go on an early winning streak. I hope you've enjoyed reading this, and will continue to do so for future episodes!

    Who's your Daddy?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 02:04 PM PST

Deadline Day: Watford sign (son of) Bergkamp and Pochettino.

After seeing Watford signing these two today, it got me thinking about the amount of successful father and son combo's these days, and if you could do an FM save with these restrictions.

If it was only to use or sign players who's father has played pro football at any level, then that isn't much of a challenge. But what about players who's father has played international football?

So I spent part of my work day trying to find as many players as I could who's father has an international cap (sorry gaffer, I'll do more actual work tomorrow). I picked out the better players and left a few of the lower league ones off (eg Daniel Maldini makes it, but Christian does not).

Goalkeepers, Midfielders and Forwards are aplenty, but Defenders are very much lacking.

There are also sooooo many world class players who's dads were pro's, but never had an International Cap, I've added them at the bottom.

A good mix of young and old here, and if I've missed anyone let me know, but here we go!

    Goalkeepers:

    Kasper Schmeichel

Wojciech Szcznesny (dad has 7 Polish caps, I had not a clue either)

Joe Van Der Sar (Ajax youth, son of Edwin)

Luca Zidane (first of 2 Zizou sons included)

Johnathan Klinnsmann (German dad Jurgen, but declared for the US)

Runnar Runnersson (104 caps for his dad, up there with Maldini/Weah/Thuram)

    Defenders:

Daley Blind (son of Ajax CL winner Danny)

Maxim Gullit (son of Ruud, also his mother is Johan Cruyff's niece)

Phillp Max (dad got a single German cap in '02)

Jordan Lukaku (dad played for Zaire in the 90's, edited and added in)

Marcos Alonso (dad and grandad both played for Spain, edited and added in)

And that's the only decent defenders I can find ... if anyone has any others please let me know. There are a few who just miss the cut that would really have helped here, they are at the bottom.

    Midfielders:

Thiago and Rafinha (dad Manizho won the '94 WC with Brazil)

    Gio Reyna

Khephren Thuram (son of Lillian, his brother is a striker so he is further down)

    Daniel Maldini

Harvey Neville (son of Phil, not Gary)

    Justin Kluivert

Henrikh Mkhitaryan (dad got 2 caps in '94 for Armenia)

Marcel Sabitzer (dad got 6 Austrian caps and a single goal in the 90's)

    Allen and Dino Halilovic

    Enzo Zidane

Levin Oztunali (son of Uwe Seeler)

Steven Berghuis (a single cap for his dad in '89)

    Denis Cheryshev

    Strikers:

Erling Haaland (the jewel in the crown if you ever do a save like this, his dad was on the end of the Roy Keane's stamp when he was at City)

Issac Drogba (just signed for Guingamp)

Sidney Van Hooijdonk (son of Pierre)

Timo Weah (the only son of a current leader of a country on the list ...)

    Federico Chiesa

Giovanni Simeone (his brother plays at a lower level in Spain so I've left him off)

    Marcus Thuram

Jordan and Andre Ayew (son of Abedi Pele)

    Andrei Gudjohnsen

Alexander Sorloth (no idea his father was a player to be honest)

Fabio Silva (dad got 2 friendly caps in '02)

Jordan Larsson (son of the king, Henrik)

Romelu Lukaku (brother of Jordan, edited and added in)

P.E. Aubameyang (dad won 80 Gabon caps, edit and added in)

Divock Origi (dad was capped by Kenya, edited and added in)

    Daddy wasnt quite good enough:

If only ... The list below is players who's dad were pro's (some at decent level) but never had an international cap:

Tin Jedvaj, Lucas and Theo Hernandez, Gonzalo Higuain, Nemanja Gudelj, Bojan, Sergej Mil-Savic, Leo Bittencourt, Rodrygo, Rodrigo (Leeds), Falcao, Mats Hummels, Ethan Ampadu, Chicarito (his grandad got caps, but not his dad), Martin Odegaard, Jose Fonte, Son Heung-Min, Andrea Herrara, Saul, Ryan Christie, Sergio Busquets (dad won CL, but no caps).

    Overall:

The squad of players who's dad got a cap would be quite strong, really good going forward but the lack of defenders would probably be a problem if you do a full save.

Add the players in who nearly made it on the list though and you would dominate Europe for years. So much talent.

    Hope you enjoyed reading!

PS: I left Ianis Hagi off the list because well, I'm a Celtic fan. And a bitter one at that.
