If you're looking for a team to manage, a challenge to do, or you yourself have suggestions for teams/challenges for other people to do, use this thread to discuss.

This is to seperate these kinds of questions from the Help Thread, which is more for gameplay/tactics questions

How Blackburn won the World Cup.

How Blackburn won the World Cup.

Why I sent Blackburn to the World Cup

I recently made the assertion to some friends that it wouldn't be unfeasible for Blackburn to win the World Cup if they were allowed to compete. i.e. maybe they'd win 1/100 or 1/500, not good odds by any means but within the realms of possibility.

So I decided to recreate this in the best way I could, on FM, I made every current Blackburn player Qatari (with the exception of loanees who I didn't notice were missing until far too late), and I put Tony Mowbray and his assistant in charge of Qatar.

In order to prove my point I agreed to sim the 2022 World Cup 100 times, I chose not to freeze attributes to counteract development/ regression as my point originated specifically around the 2022 World Cup.

    The Simulation

I simulated forward to the group stage draw and "Blackburn" were drawn again Nigeria, Turkey and the USA, an easier group given their status as hosts but each team were definitely capable of beating us, something I became familiar with over my many sims.

    Purgatory

It was now time for my first simulation of the World Cup, and, ignoring the Qatari goalkeeper who I didn't think to change nationalities, the squad was essentially that of 2020 Blackburn, even including a 38 year old Stewart Downing who clearly held off retirement in the knowledge he'd be able to take part in this wonderful experiment.

22 people who wouldn't know Qatar existed if they weren't hosting the World Cup

Despite my initial assertions, my confidence seemed misplaced, with a tragic performance of 3 losses in the group sending Blackburn tumbling out of the World Cup on the first attempt, a lack of success that was only repeated in the following two simulations.

    Success

I was then quickly reminded of why I initially had confidence, and by the fourth attempt they managed to qualify top of the group, and were to face Mexico who finished behind Germany in Group B.

    Group B

The game was a great one for Blackburn, with Adam Armstrong, who quickly cemented himself as the team's best player, scoring in the 70th minute, with Blackburn edging the match stats. However, this joy did not last for long, with a 96th minute corner allowing Hector Herrera to bundle home and send the game to extra time, and eventually penalties.

    This happened.

4-3 on penalties to the mighty Blackburn

Whilst Blackburn were able to beat obviously good, but not world class, opposition in the Ro16, they would next face an undoubtedly world class Netherlands side.

Some weaker players but still a world class core

The gulf in class was quickly emphasised with Donyell Malen scoring a 20th minute goal to seemingly sink Blackburn early, with the Dutch continuing to run up the shots against the Blackburn side. But, as any shithouse Northern team would, Blackburn countered, with a quick breakaway from Sam Gallagher on the stroke of half time enough to, once again, send the game to extra time. During this extra period I was lucky enough to witness a historic display from Wout Weghorst, who seemingly missed chance after chance throughout extra time, wasting every highlight the Dutch had.

This once again allowed us to pounce, once again, on penalties.

5-4 on penalties (all skill no luck)

The Semi Final, however, would not prove so lucky, with several key players, including Adam Armstrong and Bradley Dack suspended through yellow cards, a weakened XI fell flat on their faces against an Italian team who enjoyed an xG of 5 in a 6-1 demolition.

    pain

A shock, however, did occur in the 3rd place playoff against a full strength France, in which Blackburn earned a 2 goal cushion before being pegged back by a 70th minute goal from Rabiot, which, despite the firepower of Mbappe and Pogba, France were unable to add to.

    hope?

Despite the Italy result, a 3rd place finish was a great success, it showed that Blackburn could beat the best teams on their day, essentially the central idea to my original assertion, whilst also providing hope for future success.

    Mild future success

I will preface this following section by saying that I don't have any screenshots for both this section, and a number of future ones as I did not keep the save files for many of these largely unfruitful simulations, with only the scores of knockout games and an ongoing counter of simulations being recorded.

Blackburn were able to follow up this run with two Ro16 exits to Germany, although one loss on penalties showed there was potential for an upset in the future. A brief dry spell quickly followed, only to be swiftly eradicated by another success, with a 2-1 victory of Germany in the Ro16, showing me we weren't reliant on playing weaker opposition from Group B in order to advance to the Quarter Finals.

We lost to France, another 2-1 result between the two sides, but ultimately our goal was the one acting as a consolation as Blackburn moved back to square one. Square one once again resulted in consecutive Ro16 exits, one on penalties to Germany, and another on penalties on Mexico. Then square one became far less generous.

    A prolonged lack of success

Blackburn did not qualify from the group for 17 consecutive simulations. That is all.

    Mediocrity

This period of extended failure was followed by a mixture of Ro16 exits and group stage failures, with Germany and Mexico once again providing the punishment on 5 different occasions.

Hope was, however, provided on Blackburn's next trip to the Ro16, where they would face Morocco instead, and, despite holding a 4-1 midway through the second half, they almost drove me to insanity, eventually scraping a 5-4 win, setting up another Quarter Final with France.

As I previously said, I do not have any screenshots for this section, but I remember a Harry Chapman brace providing our half of a 2-2 draw, in which we lost on penalties (scoring only one if my memory serves correctly).

This trip to the Quarter Final sprung a streak of a further 3 QF appearances when Blackburn qualified for the knockout rounds, with 2 more victories over Morocco, as well as one over Germany, ultimately going to waste as a further loss to France, as well as 4-0 and 3-0 losses to the Netherlands, reminded me that it was still just Blackburn playing.
