    The legend of Magno

    The legend of Magno

Once upon a time (a year and a quarter ago), a young Brazilian/Norwegian fullback popped up in my youth intake. This young man, that goes by the mononym "Magno".

Magno was quick to develop as Fredrikstad had a shortage of right backs. As a fifteen year old, he started in 25 league games and had an average rating of a 6.60. Poor, but understandable for a young chap in the top flight in Norway.

After 14 months, Magno has been making fantastic development due to exposure to the first team and the champions league.

However, the 6.60 average doesn't begin to describe the impact that Magno has had, especially in the playoff game to qualify for the 2023-24 champions league. Picture this, having played 3 teams to even qualify for the playoff, Magno did a superb job. The playoff was where Magno proved his legend status.

Fredrikstad played Olympiakos, a much more established team than Fredrikstad. Game one was played in Norway and this game saw Fredrikstad lose a 4-2 lead in injury time, just to score on the last kick of the ball. With Fredrikstad up 5-4 on aggregate going to Greece, a miracle was needed.

Early into the game, Fredrikstad scored their first away goal to grow their lead to 6-4. Magno dashed down the right side, beat his man and crossed the ball into another promising striker. However, their comfort was short as Olympiakos scored just 11 minutes after. Going into the half time break, the dressing room was tense, Fredrikstad was hanging on by a thread and they knew they'd be under heavy fire. Lady luck was on their side however, and 5 minutes into the second half, a penalty was drawn.

Now when us Football fans hear the word "hero", we think of a fantastic goal, late in the game, or a cool and calm penalty to seal of the game. Magno did not draw this penalty, nor take it. In actuality, Magno moment of brilliance came much after the penalty was converted and Fredrikstad took a 7-5 lead on aggregate. After a controversial offside call at the 67' minute, which saw Fredrikstad's goal nullified, Olympiakos decided to turn on the pressure.

Controversy brings out the best in players and even though Magno was the youngest player to ever play in a champions league game, he quickly made his mark. Us football manager fans never highlight
the defensive plays that save games, until now.

77:18, the time that will go down in not just Fredrikstad football history, but also Norwegian football history. 77:18 is the exact second that Magno's Magical Moment occurred. After a corner to Olympiakos, there was a scramble in the box. Magno is short, but height doesn't measure heart (TM to Marcus Stroman), on the far post, Magno stood. The only thing stopping Olympiakos from bringing the game to one goal, Magno stood.

Mady Camara shot the ball, a sure goal, only for Magno to dive, catching the ball with his foot, allowing Fredrikstad to quickly reorganize and clear the ball and hold out for the win. As the wonderful Zealand quotes: "Oh brilliant that's why you have people on the post". Zealand's discord was going crazy, seeing MAGNO make his impact. Shoutout to them for helping make Magno the legend.

Even with a goal and the game saving block, Magno finished the game with a 6.8. Fredrikstad quickly fell in the champions league group stage having played Porto, Inter and Sevilla. However, Magno is the reason why this club can continue to grow as qualifying for the champions league gave Fredrikstad 16 million.

Now in his second season, Magno has improved putting up a 7.27 average in league competition, including his first goal from the actual run of play. His great start has help Fredrikstad stay near the top of the league during the start of the season.

Where will the legend Magno go? Who knows. He may not be considered a club legend just yet, but to me and Zealand's discord, he's already the best player to have ever laced up a pair of cleats.

    Magno at the start.

Magno, now 16, has developed into a promising full-back.

Magno's progress since arriving at the club 14 months ago

Magno dashes by his man, crosses it into open space for the 6-4 lead on aggregate

this controversial offside saw what would have (and should have been) the goal to seal the game. Controversy makes great player excel however.
