Four years of unknowns: Low reputation signings only at Arsenal

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 03:56 AM PST

Once per year when Arsenal are doing crap, I start a new save promising to fix it. This time around, I've been a bit more restrictive and thought I might as well share with you!

The rules: Don't get sacked as Arsenal manager while only signing <28yo players with up to 2 stars reputation (aka basically complete unknowns for the Prem) or from the Championship (I never used this option).

I also let my HOYD buy players for the U23, I just sign each transfer off to make sure we aren't spending obscene amounts. The tactic is a very straight forward positive 4-1-2-3 with wing backs rounding inside forwards, some pressing, slightly shorter passing.

    20/21

First order of business: shipping off any elders with only a year left and plugging any remaining gaps. The squad is enormous and so some youngsters (notably Reiss Nelson) go on loan.

    Out:

    • David Luiz to Real Sociedad for £6.75M. I have a billion center backs and he only has a year left.
    • Sokratis Papastathopoulos to Burnley for £5.5M. See above.
    • (January window) Shkodran Mustafi to Wolves for £9.5M. Yep, another.
    • Mesut Özil to Napoli for £12M. Absolutely ecstatic to get the 350K/w off the bill.

    In:

    • Matteo Pessina from Atalanta for £9M. My Özil replacement, a 23yo all-rounder central midfielder with a 2 star reputation on £44k/w.

The season goes above my expectations. We lose only two league games (both to the winners Liverpool) but draw 12 to end up with a comfortable third position behind Liverpool and Man Utd. In Europa League, we get knocked out by RB Leipzig in the first knockout round. We lose the League cup final to Everton and drop out of the FA cup in the semis to Aston Villa. Not good, not terrible. Nicolas Pepe is the standout player with 5 goals and 14 assists in the league.

    21/22

With CL football secured and a bunch of high earners out of the squad, is it time to invest and aim high? No. I spend £4.1M on a back up left back and kick on. Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi returning from loans are like new signings, after all.

    Out:

    • Sead Kolasinac to Watford for £31M (!!!). One year left on his deal and somebody put the decimal sign in the wrong place, but I don't mind.
    • Granit Xhaka to AS Monaco for £24.5M. Another final year deal. He hasn't been that bad, but Mo Elneny and Torreira are good enough for the position (DM - DLP-d).
    • Cedric to FC Porto for £12.75M. Maitland-Niles and Calum Chambers can both cover RB, so this is just free money.
    • Kostas Mavropanos to Borussia Mönchengladbach for £7.25M. Another center back.
    • Willian to Juventus for £13.25M. He keeps falling upwards, but at least we get paid. Nelson and Martinelli are ready.
    • Joel Ideho to Brighton for £12M. I had no idea who he was when Brighton knocked on the door. Another left-sided IF in the U23s. I made sure to put a nice profit clause on this in case he turned out good.
    • (January window) Alexandre Lacazette to Southampton for £16.75M. I didn't get any bids in the summer so he moved in January with 6 months left on his deal. Aubameyang took the striker position, leaving Nelson and Martinelli to fight for left wing.
    • (February) Pablo Mari to Guangzhou Evergrande for £32.5M. Yep, another center back. We have now sold 5 center backs since i joined and still have 4 left in the squad.

    In:

    • Jesus Gallardo from CF Monterrey (Mexico) for £4.1M. 26yo left back replacement for Sead Kolasinac. Tierney is fantastic so this is nice enough cover.

Slow improvements! We finish 2nd in the league behind 97-pointers Man Utd. Aubameyang at striker nets 19 in the league but no player is outstanding. We make it out of the CL group only to get knocked out by RB Leipzig in the first knockout round (deja vu??). The save's first silverware arrives this season as we blast by Brentford (semis) and Brighton (final) in the FA cup to add yet another one to the club's collection.

    22/23

After making a £170.7M transfer profit in the first two seasons, it is time to spend some actual money. We bring in two young players with relatively high FM-community reputations but with only 2 stars in game. Aubameyang is on his last year and it's time to phase him out. The board has now asked me to "Sign high-reputation players" and "Increase commercial revenue", but that is not happening.

    Out:

    • Nobody. I've reached Arsenal fan nirvana with no deadwood kicking about and collecting wages. I pause and take a deep breath.

    In:

    • Sebastiano Esposito from Inter for £17.25M. Signing this 19yo striker qualifies not only for "every single FM save starter pack" but also has a low rep at this point for some reason. He becomes my third choice striker, waiting on the bench for Aubameyang's legs to give up.
    • Leonidas Stergiou from FC St Gallen for £14.25M. The 20yo center back wonderkid becomes my fourth choice, pushing Chambers to the RB/CB/DM backup role that he is perfect for but hates, pointlessly complaining about it every season.

The biggest deadwood was there all along. Aubameyang scores 5 in 28 striker starts in the league. We finish 3rd in the league (behind Liverpool and Man Utd, surprise!) only thanks to a fantastic defensive performance conceding 21 goals, and Reiss Nelson carrying the whole team on his back with 18 goals and 14 assists in the league. The Bellerin-Saliba-Gabriel-Tierney backline is in full gear. The Champions League brings more disappointment as we finish last place in a group with Inter, PSG and Club Brugge, but at least we don't have to play EL knockouts. We retain the FA cup, however!

    23/24

Aubameyang leaves on a free and so my top earners are Thomas Partey and Nicolas Pepe, who both have been pretty good so far. I get fed up with cup keeper Runarsson after the CL disaster and sell him, bringing in a new backup who a month later becomes first choice when Bayern Munich ask for 31yo Bernd Leno. This is hence the first season of the save with more than 1 new player in the first choice eleven - Lafont and Esposito are in. This summer I also realized that I haven't really looked at my U23s that much (except for promoting youngsters when they reach 2.5 stars) and cash in.

    Out:

    • Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang released on a free. Catastrophic final season.
    • Bernd Leno to Bayern Munich for £75M. No keeper is worth that much money in FM.
    • Mohamed Elneny to Southampton for £19.75M. Last year of the deal, and youngster Charlie Patino returned from a good loan in the Championship to take the backup DM spot.
    • (January window) Matteo Pessina to Dynamo Kyiv for £44M. My HOYD signed Matias Palacios in August 2021 and the young playmaker takes Pessina's backup spot now. Nice profit as well.
    • (January window) Rob Holding to SL Benfica for £38M. Holding has been kicking up a fuss about not being first choice ever since Saliba took over and has been refusing to extend his contract so off he goes.
    • Runar Alex Runarsson to Derby County for £19M. Crazy money for my underperforming backup keeper.
    • Daniel Ballard to Fortuna Dusseldorf for £8.75M. 23yo centerback who never got a game.
    • Emile Smith Rowe to AS Roma for £18.25M. He never really got a chance as Nelson and Martinelli blocked his path, so it was time to move on.
    • Tyreece John-Jules to Crystal Palace for £5.75M. Young striker, didn't fit in the senior squad.
    • Isaias Barroza to SD Eibar for £3.2M. My HOYD signed this guy for the U23s in January 2022 for £950K and while he wasn't good enough for the first team, he earned the Best Player award in Argentina while on loan to Velez, raising his value to £17M. Nobody bid that high, though.

    In:

    • Alban Lafont from ACF Fiorentina for £4M. Former FM wonderkid comes in to replace Runarsson but ends up replacing Leno as first-choice keeper.
    • Ivan Nevistic from FC Augsburg for £2.8M. New backup keeper for Lafont.

What a story for the fourth season. Globally-known Aubameyang's sad final season is followed up by relative nobody Esposito stepping up and banging in 30 league goals and 7 assists in 34 apps. Wow. We finish second in the league behind Liverpool largely due to a massive slump in form in March. CL: knocked out by Barcelona in the first knockout round, while losing in the league cup final to Liverpool. We lose to Spurs in the FA cup 5th round, but that's okay: they lose all their dignity by getting relegated to the Championship! Michael Laudrup took over there ahead of this season, getting sacked before Christmas, and now Pedro Martins is the guy in charge of the collapse.

    Reflections

Two-star reputation limit as a top club is a great challenge that I would recommend to anybody. I barely recognized a single name in my scouting list, which felt much nicer than signing the same old faces every time. Also, my youth actually got a chance as I didn't sign the best players in the world in the second window. It seems that commercial revenue has been impacted however, but this might go up again as my young players win more accolades. I'll keep going with this save but regens are starting to take over now so it might not be as interesting of a story going forward.

This is my squad as of end of 23/24. Usta is a regen my HOYD picked up last year, everybody else I believe I have mentioned above.

I got sent into the Oppositions locker room..

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 10:58 AM PST

So I'm playing as Dorking FC, and after a 7-2 stomping of Burton, I got sent into their locker room, and got to talk to them before then going into our own locker room.

    What the hell?

I also noticed during the game that I was getting dugout messages about injuries on the Burton side with the "Deal with it" buttons beneath, which I tried pressing once or twice, maybe that triggered this?
