Please use this thread as a place to ask questions that are specific to your save, such as:

    • "Why is my tactic not working?"

    • "What role should I play this player in?"

    • "I have £xxm to spend, who should I buy?"

If you are asking for tactical help/advice, please post an image of your formation and what insutructions/roles you have set.

As a rule of thumb, if you ask a question, answer a question. This is what keeps this thread alive and useful.

Also, please remember that the team suggestion thread can be found in the sidebar, so please use that and give your suggestions to people there too!

My First Champions League - How I made winning with PSG harder than it probably needed to be

    Posted: 27 Dec 2020 11:26 AM PST

I'm a relatively new FM player, having gotten FM20 when it was available for free on the Epic Games store a couple of months ago. I've been playing with a couple of saves of varying levels, but this save with PSG has recently become my go-to because I've only been playing while drinking recently I am a big noob. This culminated in me winning the Champions League for the first time last night, and I thought I'd share the story of my first time with y'all.

The Group Stage - Tottenham, København, and Lokomotiv Moscow

The group stage was fairly uneventful, although it did feature one surprise: Viktor Fischer, signed for £7.5m to provide cover for an injured Neymar, scored in the first three matches of the competition, including against his former club København. We started the group with a 2-1 victory over Tottenham, although we perhaps should have done more considering Serge Aurier was sent off in only the third minute. Regardless, we won four of the five remaining matches, drawing only the home leg against Tottenham having already secured the group. Tottenham also qualified, with København managing to secure the Europa League spot on the final matchday.

The Round of 16 - Borussia Dortmund

The first knock-out round seemed a bit unlucky, with Dortmund posing a slightly greater challenge than I had hoped for so early on, but with no-one to play but the team in front of us, we set out on our road to Turkey and the Final.

The first leg began poorly, with Axel Witsel finding the top corner from just outside the box in the ninth minute, and was made worse with a smashed volley from 25 yards by Jadon Sancho in the 27th. We went into the locker room down 2-0 away from home, and the team knew they had to show better in the second half. Neymar and big summer-signing Paulo Dybala were particularly inspired, and struck back to back on 56 and 59 minutes respectively to bring the match back to even terms, where it would stay until the final whistle, bringing the tie back to the Parc des Princes at 2-2.

At home, the team was determined to put out a better showing than in the away leg, and Mauro Icardi scored in the 19th minute to give us the lead. From there, we possessed the game away, and Angel Di Maria came off the bench to score a second in the 77th minute. Thorgan Hazard did pull one back for the away side in the 81st minute, but following the goal, the defense tightened up and saw out the match for a 2-1 victory on the day, and a 4-3 victory on aggregate.

    The Quarterfinal - Atlético Madrid

In a quarterfinal draw that still had teams such as Shakhtar Donetsk and Bayer 04, PSG were perhaps a little disappointed to be drawn against Atlético Madrid, who were having a very strong season domestically in Spain. That form carried over into the Champions League, much to the dismay of our players and supporters. The first leg was a disaster, as Atlético battered us 3-0 at the Parc des Princes behind two goals from Álvaro Morata and another from Koke. Despite better possession and a healthy amount of shots, Jan Oblak held us scoreless, and heading to the Wanda Metropolitano the tie felt helpless. I was preparing for the sack. This was not the way this save was supposed to go!

Knowing at least three goals were required, all forms of caution were thrown to the wind. Our deployment of a ball-winning midfielder was abandoned in favor of an additional playmaker, and our wingers and striker were pushed even further forward than normal. And somehow, by some stroke of genius luck, it worked! The team stormed out of the gates in the first half! Neymar scored in the 17th minute! Dybala struck in the 24th! And just before halftime, Icardi found the net to bring the aggregate score level at three!

Confidence was high coming out after the break, but Atlético were resolute and determined to play better than they had in the first half. For forty minutes, it appeared that both teams had finally come to play, and the match seemed destined for extra time. Then Kylian Mbappé managed to win the ball back high up the right wing, and fired in a low fizzing cross that was met by a sliding Paulo Dybala at the back post! 4-3 on 87 minutes! Surely PSG were through to the Semi-Finals! But the match wasn't over yet, and Atlético were determined not to go out without a fight. And fight they did, bringing on a third forward in Diego Costa. With five minutes added, PSG had a free-kick high up the pitch and were caught with too many men forward. Atlético cleared and Costa managed to overpower the defense for a 91st-minute goal. Suddenly it was PSG on the ropes, with Atlético throwing men forward, egged on by their 66,000 fans. And then, it happened. Late in the 95th minute, Marco Verratti dragged down Héctor Herrera right on the penalty spot. Never a more stonewall penalty had anyone in attendance seen. Verratti was inconsolable, and time seemed to stand still as Diego Costa stepped forward to take the penalty with what should be the last kick of the game. There was a deathly quiet as the Wanda Metropolitano prepared to erupt in celebration. The eruption never came. Costa drove his penalty hard and low to the left, but Keylor Navas guessed right and got a strong hand to the shot to turn it away! The hero! As the referee blew the final whistle, Navas found himself buried by PSG players and staff, and by the celebrations, one would have thought that this was the final! By the skin of their teeth, PSG had managed to overcome a 3-0 first-leg loss to advance 4-4 on away goals!

    The Semi-Final - Bayer 04

While PSG fought to overcome Atlético Madrid, Bayer 04 defied all expectations and managed to dispatch Barcelona by an aggregate scoreline of 5-2. Unfortunately for them, the momentum generated by our second-leg come back was too much for them to overcome, although they fought hard. Mauro Icardi was able to score a first-half hat trick at home in the first leg, and that proved too much for Bayer 04 to overcome. The rest of the tie was relatively uneventful. Kevin Volland scored a consolation goal in the second half of the first leg, but the second leg played out to a boring 0-0. After the excitement of the previous round, the semi-final brought the team back down to earth, probably a good thing in preparation for the final

    The Final - Liverpool

PSG, in their quest for their first-ever Champions League trophy, had one final obstacle to overcome. Likewise, it was time for me to overcome a great personal hurdle. This save is my fourth in FM20. My first was a get-to-know-the-game save with Real Madrid. In that save, I was drawn into the same group as Liverpool, where they beat us comfortably both home and away. We met again in the semi-final, where they beat us rather comprehensively again, and the loss of momentum from that loss put us on a run of dropped points that saw us lose out on the league title to Barcelona on the penultimate matchday. In my third save with my favorite team Crystal Palace, I have also yet to get a result against Liverpool. They have been, to this point, my personal bogey-team. In this save they were as strong as ever, boasting one of the best defenses and the best attack in the Champions League. We were in for the biggest challenge of the season. Luckily, this was a one-off match. I knew that if I could keep them quiet for one match, I had a chance. I just needed one of my talented attackers to put away one chance and we could win.

Up to this point, I hadn't really tinkered with tactics that much and just run a basic gegenpress as it was set up when you select it. Other than against Atlético Madrid it had served me well. But I knew if I went in and tried to take the game to Liverpool, Mané and Salah would destroy me on the counter, so it was time for some changes. My wingbacks, typically set to support and attack, were both instructed to defend. Neymar was instructed to drop from his attacking role into a more supportive one, and my Advanced Playmaking CM spot was dropped all the way back to a Deep-lying Playmaker on defend duty. Icardi, generally set as a pressing forward, was told to poach to his heart's delight, the only attacking role in the entire team. Despite running a positive or attacking mentality as the favorites for most of the season, we came out cautious against Liverpool. I was determined not to be drawn into a shootout. We would possess as much as possible, get forward when the opportunity presented, and otherwise defend like hell.

Right from kick-off it was apparent this would be a tough match, as they created their first chance within the first minute. But we settled in and worked to possess and limit their chances. Then, in the 15th minute, it happened. After taking possession in the defensive zone, a ball over the top put Icardi in behind! The ball was in the net! Icardi had given us the lead! The crowd was going nuts! And then everyone saw him, the linesman, stood on the sideline, his flag raised. Icardi was offside, the goal would not stand.

From there, the match proved to be exciting, and relatively well matched to boot. Despite PSG controlling possession, Liverpool were the ones creating the majority of the chances, but Keylor Navas proved to be up to the task. Indeed both goalkeepers were, and the game went into extra time still without a goal. In extra time, it came time for a wrinkle in the tactics. Mbappé had come off late in regulation due to a lack of fitness as he returned from an injury. Then just after half-time of extra-time, Neymar was forced off with a hamstring issue. I did not want to go to penalties without two of my best takers, so it was time for drastic measures. Dybala was pushed forward as a second striker, and Sarabia and Di Maria on the wings were put on attacking instructions. Suddenly it was PSG in the ascendancy and putting all the pressure on Liverpool. And finally, the breakthrough came. Pablo Sarabia chased a loose ball down on the end line, just inside the penalty area. He turned and found himself face-to-face with Trent Alexander-Arnold. He shook his hips and fired a cross past the Liverpool defender. The ball whipped past Paulo Dybala, who was marked by two men at the near post, and found the left foot of Mauro Icardi, all alone in the middle of the six-yard box! The net bulged, and Icardi wheeled away in celebration! With six minutes to play, PSG were in the lead, and this time the defense made sure there would be no last-second nail-biting! Mauro Icardi's ninth goal in the Champions League sealed the trophy and his permanent move to PSG!

    Football Manager Book: The Journeyman

    Posted: 27 Dec 2020 01:14 PM PST

Hello all, I am considering distilling my journeyman save, using @Timo@'s 217 nation update, into a book which would detail each nation and team I have played in, as well as key players. It would probably be quite a long read, and would be detailed and written almost like an autobiography, but I thought it might be useful to gauge interest for such a thing on here. I know there have been a few FM books written already, but I feel like journeymen are often forgotten in place of a hometown or pyramid save. Thanks for any opinions!

Managed to snag De Jong for Locatelli who in fm21 is a really nice player. I've got no intention of selling on De Jong, a Model Citizen he's gonna mentor and captain my team for years to come.
