The agents! I don't know if this is widely known but if you go to superstars' agents and sort by age you might find that they also represent young, sometime free agents, wonderkids!

I spent 95 million on a player as York City after 11 seasons and I finally get what everyone is on about. Tis a wondrous thing to buy a ready-made player.

16 games at AMR 7 goals and 10 assists 7.55

So this is what it is to not snatch a player for 1.5m and sell him on for 20.

Just need to actually have a Youth Player get beyond my under 18s and I'll get what you lot are talking about when you moan about your premier league sides.

I think it happened once in FM08 but my memory is hazy.

The Clean Slate - all UK players have their contracts wiped out (FM20 playthrough experiment, one season)

The Clean Slate - all UK players have their contracts wiped out (FM20 playthrough experiment, one season)

For some reason I woke up this morning wondering how a season would play out if every player at every level in the United Kingdom had their contracts wiped out, and every team began the season with a playing staff of zero. I thought I'd give it a go seeing as in the UK we're all now in Tier 4 of COVID restrictions, meaning we can't think about other people unless we're outside and wearing a mask, so it's not like I'm overburdened with social things. And I'm using FM20 because I don't like the emoji-driven interface in FM21 so, yeah.

Here's what I did, which involved a bit of trial and error.

    1. Downloaded the latest possible data update.

    2. Removed the contract details of every player in the UK at every level of the game.

    3. Gave every team in every league the same starting amount of money, ranging from £150M for the EPL, to £1M for all Vanorama, Welsh and Irish teams.

    4. After playing half a season, I realised that I had to go back and wipe out the debts; so every team in the top 4 Englsh leagues plus the top 2 in Scotland had all debts removed too.

Then I started a season with the top 4 English and Scottish Leagues plus the top league in Wales and N. Ireland. None of the starting options were ticked, meaning that any missing key staff were added but nothing else.

What I found was very odd, even when I went back and tweaked a couple of things (like wiping debts out). Teams tended to run on very small squads especially at the top end of the game, probably due to smaller amount of capital they had (Stenhousemuir had double the number of professionals that Man Utd had).

Being a United fan, the first thing I checked was their signings on August 31st in my first attempt, and the only player they had signed was a goalkeeper called Jamie Stephens, formerly of Newport, Barnet and Airbus UK Broughton. They'd played four games with the random nobodies plus Jamie Stephens in goal. Arsenal were similar; they'd only signed Reguillon (but at least they had addressed their problem at left-back). That was when I wondered if the debts were stopping recruitment, so I went back and fixed that (and also increased the starting amount of money each team had).

Second playthrough, and the first thing United did was take James Maddison on trial... then signed Jamie Stephens. United continued their strategy of signing promising young players (Fofana, Branthwaite, Hoever) but that was really it. Their status is rich, so it's not a cash thing. And they're already on their sixth manager of the season - Solskjaer, Neil Ryan (caretaker), Maurizio Sarri (sacked after 33 days), Ryan again (who has now accumulated only a week less than Sarri), Allegri (38 days), Mike Phelan (caretaker), then Quique Sanchez Flores, who will surely get sacked after guiding them to 18th. United managed just 10 goals all season and only score more than one in one game, against Villa. A 16yo called Charlie Patino (formerly of Ipswich) played 45 games for United, the second most after Ki-Jana Hoever.

Arsenal were very similar. Reguillon is the only player they have signed who is over 18, and they only have one 18yo (Omar Rekik). The rest of their squad is three 17yos, one 15yo, and the rest are 16. Arteta lasted 157 days, Jorginho was caretaker for a fortnight, and Marcelino is the current manager.

All of this makes me wonder a) if it's all Ed Woodward's fault (I am mostly convinced of this) but also if there is something underlying in the game, which has made Arsenal and United behave this way.

Here's a summary of what happened after one season, and if you want to see more screenshots, take a look here: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/19n9kDCiHaym-4-GOgL42Nf5sqvQpq3BPWCzp4tiXgy4/edit?usp=sharing

    ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE

    1. Liverpool

    2. Man City

    3. Leicester

    4. Chelsea

    5. Tottenham

    6. Newcastle

    7. Everton

    -------------

    1. Man Utd

    2. Brighton

    3. Arsenal

TOP SCORER: Aubameyang (Leicester) 22 goals

AVE RATING: Bernardo Silva (Liverpool) 7.75

    ASSISTS: Bernardo Silva (Liverpool) 14

CLEAN SHEETS: Alisson (Man City) 22

What I might do next is run it for a couple of seasons and then see how it looks; see how long it takes Arsenal and United to course-correct (if they do at all!).

    That dreaded January form slump....

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 12:00 PM PST

You all know what I'm talking about.....you're humming along, conquering all in your path and then right around the new year your team suddenly forgets how to pass a ball and your strikers shoot everything literally at the goalie (and all the opposing goalies turn into superheroes who save everything in their path).

My question is: What are some strategies that people use to manage your team through this? I'll typically switch my tactics and formations around but this often leads to a month or two of chopping and changing because I can't get anything to stick. Perhaps it's a change of mentality or playing style....perhaps a change of personnel...

Let's use this thread to share some ideas and see if we can't figure out how to manage this period a little bit more smoothly.
