Posted: 17 Nov 2020 12:09 PM PST For 56 years, English football has harboured one desire: to bring football home again by winning a major tournament. Since Alf Ramsey led England to World Cup victory, his successors have all tried to emulate his achievement. They have all failed. Some were closer than others, certainly. But at the end of the day, the fact is that only three managers have taken England to a semi-final at a major tournament since 1966; Bobby Robson (World Cup 1990), Terry Venables (Euro 96) and Gareth Southgate (World Cup 2018). Using the technology of Football Manager 2020, I'm going to change that. But I've added a twist (this is Reddit, after all). England has always had some talented players pulling on the Three Lions. But none (that I can find) have been from non-league clubs. Oh sure, there's been England players that used to play for non-league teams, but none that were current non-league players. Instead, they play for England C, an England team specifically comprised of non-league players. England C, however, is not the senior England team, and that's the one that matters to the England fans. This brings me on to the point (I'm a terrible rambler, I know): what would happen if the England squad was entirely comprised of non-league players? Using Football Manager, I can answer that question. I will take over the post of England manager, but instead of doing what I like with the squad, I must follow two rules: 1) I can only use players from the National League and the National League North/South. 2) I can't draft in people that have been loaned from a Premier/EFL club to a non-league club. It doesn't matter if I see a young English winger who pundits are saying is the next Michael Owen (other England players are available) - if he's only on loan at Aldershot from Manchester City, there'll be no England cap for him. Players that have been loaned between non-league clubs are permitted. "But what do you plan to do?" you may ask? The answer is quite simple: my objective is to win both the World Cup and European Championships, so that football has not just come home, but is firmly situated in England. The problem is that I'll be doing that with a band of non-league misfits (that sounds like a film). Still, I'm up to the task, and I hope you will be reading about it! I'll post updates when I'm able, it's hard to pin down a precise schedule, but I'll do my best! The adventure begins in the next part... [link] [comments] | ||
