I put Phil Jones up front for PSG. Here's what happened

Phil Jones ✕ Paris Saint-Germain, Part II of II

Approaching the halfway point in the season, Phil Jones has made a mockery of the farmers' league Ligue 1. Despite (or perhaps due to?) his presence at the spearhead of our attack we're still unbeaten in the league and still in all the cup competitions. But the real test is now. Anyone can have a few lucky games, but proving that quality over an entire season is another thing entirely…

    Part I is here

    January Reinforcements

Despite me spending every penny I was given in the summer, the board kindly invent two new sponsors to add another £150m to the transfer pot. We mostly need a right back, especially since Thomas Meunier has agreed to leave and join Arsenal on a free at the end of the season (I have no idea why). I look through the most expensive right backs in the world, and sign Joshua Kimmich for £140m. Thrilling stuff.

I also convince the board to let me employ two more physios. Phil has done well so far to go without serious injury, but we can't take any chances. What will we do if our top scorer misses key games? (probably play Cavani or Icardi there instead…)

    Bouncebackability

A couple of minor setbacks – Phil's failure to add "tries tricks" to his repertoire, and Neymar winning the Ligue 1 Foreign Player of the Year award without the Englishman getting a mention – are quickly brushed aside as we continue our stroll through the domestic season. The 8-1 destruction of Angers is soon followed by a 4-1 win over Nice, Jones netting once again, and him scoring the only goal in a narrow victory over Lyon.

    https://preview.redd.it/xaziy91e3ew51.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=46de1567327678924fe52be1f33089a61dc6270d

And after a slow start he finally comes to life in the Champions League – scoring a brace in a must-win game over Atlético, and after we grab a late 2-2 draw against Inter we leave ourselves with a chance at escaping the Group of Death. All we need to do is win against Young Boys, and after being awarded a penalty in the sixth minute there's only one man for the job. Phil Jones. He dispatches it with ease, as we go on to win 4-1 and qualify for the knockout stages!

    The First Showpiece Final

Being PSG, it doesn't matter who we're drawn against in either of the French cups, we're overwhelming favourites in every round. Even having Phil Jones up front doesn't change that.

In the Coupe de la Ligue we reach the final thanks to straightforward wins over Metz, Strasbourg, and Toulouse, Jones disappointingly only managing to net a single goal along the way. With the final against Lyon approaching, my staff implore me to drop our star striker, and to remove him from set piece duty, claiming that there are "many better options in the squad". I just don't see it.

    https://preview.redd.it/w0nirwok3ew51.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=947e1779a22a6f49dc8410131ecdce35f9e1ddf8

Jones starts. The pundits all claim I'm making a mistake, but they don't understand the game the way I do. The game, despite promising so much, descends into nothingness. In search of goals I haul off Neymar and Mbappé. And with the game looking destined for extra time, Di María finally breaks the deadlock. But there's still time for Jones to shine – scoring a 94th minute penalty to seal the victory and lift his first trophy as PSG captain!

    The Second Showpiece Final

Can the more prestigious Coupe de France give us more of a run for our (limitless) money? In a word – no. We reach the final without conceding a single goal. More impressively, Jones scores in every single round! A brace against lower league Fleury 91 is followed by another goal against Angers, the only goal against both Reims and Marseille, and a stunning free kick in the semi-final against Nice.

    https://i.redd.it/flbaoo28afw51.gif

This time there's no questioning his inclusion in the starting 11 for the final. After an early Neymar goal we don't even let Toulouse have a single shot, cruising to victory. Sadly Jones doesn't continue his scoring run, but he lifts the trophy as the competition's top goalscorer nonetheless!

    https://preview.redd.it/k3q9hpnp3ew51.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c7b7ff4f80ebca14b658c797b81d8daae9b8684b

Next Up – The Champions League?

The Champions League is throwing all it can at us. After somehow navigating a group containing Inter Milan and Atlético Madrid, we're rewarded for our efforts with a nice easy draw against Real Madrid. A narrow 1-0 home win is soon wiped out in the return leg, with us trailing 2-0 at half time and with Jones having an uncharacteristically quiet game. This time it's Mbappé's turn to bail us out – scoring just after the hour mark as we hang on for an unexpected away goals win!

    https://preview.redd.it/r8801qvd6ew51.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c2b074cc272951fa11d80fbd36abc0fcbf00066b

Next up, the very beatable RB Leipzig. So beatable, in fact, that we crash out of the competition to them. A 1-0 defeat in the home leg does the damage, as despite Phil scoring an early header in the second leg, we're pegged back to a 2-2 draw that sees us exit the competition the club desires the most…

    https://preview.redd.it/t1v21bsv3ew51.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a2490568d17aa90306c20a0e271fdc1c805f391d

    Still to Play For

With the dreams of a quadruple in tatters, we have to pick ourselves up again and make sure we win the league in style. It's too easy. Even with Neymar out injured for a month we continue to rack up the goals and points. Jones continues scoring, including winning man of the match for yet another brace, this time against St Étienne.

    https://preview.redd.it/eejbch9y3ew51.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f083c704e68ece47ca2fc47801f9510b05b217cb

The league title looks more and more a formality. But another potential prize, one I hadn't given thought to until now, begins to take shape. The invincibles. With eight games to go we're still undefeated, and save for the odd goalless draw (to be expected, with a centre back up front) we've never really seemed in danger of actually losing a game. We even beat Nantes despite Herrera being sent off in the opening minute…!

    The Unstoppable Force

I'm not sure what Angers have done to upset Phil Jones, but he has something against them. After a hattrick in the first fixture, and a goal in the cup, he continues to make life a misery for them – scoring another hattrick in a 5-0 away victory. Two headers and a penalty. The perfect hattrick. Ish.

    https://preview.redd.it/3p184ug74ew51.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b15ae3108677db16ade73ae7e934569f732872c3

Our mercurial talent goes one better in the very next game, this time against Bordeaux. He opens the scoring with a ridiculous 25-yard screamer, and then just. Keeps. Scoring. Four goals. The fourth match ball of his PSG career. A 9.8 match rating. The rest of the league is left behind in his wake.

    https://preview.redd.it/9su52ad94ew51.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2411de5326e08029d5fc8a9c74d69e3069a69934

    https://preview.redd.it/fv2w06ua4ew51.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=926a80559b4c3bbcc726ceb43e68704c5bf21874

The Bordeaux game takes Phil to a frankly ridiculous 40 goals for the season, with games still to play. But anyone expecting those seven goals in two games to be a platform for even better things should know that Phil Jones works in mysterious ways. Rather than continuing his goalscoring form, it evaporates completely. He declares at 40, and his sole contribution across our final six fixtures is to miss a penalty and then sit out two games with injury. The league is all over anyway, and evidently once we lifted the trophy his drive waned somewhat.

A close-fought 3-3 draw with Lyon sets us up for an unbeaten season with one game remaining. Against arch-rivals Marseille. Despite carrying a knock I can't not pick Phil Jones now. He's thrown in to a crucial game. And does practically nothing except get booked. But with Mbappé scoring late on, we take home yet another prize. Unbeaten. 28 wins and 10 draws. With Phil starting 34 of the 38 games. The medical team are the unsung heroes of this tale...!

    https://preview.redd.it/15kosx3d4ew51.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d9d2e1efb338bcedf235717ef519a5e961d0cda9

    Season Review

And with that, the season draws to a close. And what have we learned? Well, that PSG are so easy to manage that you could literally play an uncultured centre back up front for them and they'd still win nearly everything in sight. Especially using the default 4-2-3-1 gegenpress. And that Phil Jones can be a goal machine if given the chance. Forty goals across all competitions. The top scorer in the league. He even beats Suárez and Ronaldo to the European Golden Shoe award!

Also, he most definitely is not a team player. A mere six assists in 53 appearances. But if your striker is scoring 40 goals then it seems a little harsh to criticise him for being a bit greedy… The fans certainly don't mind, voting him as our player of the season and signing of the season. To see Phil Jones' name added to the list of PSG icons is more than I could ever have expected, and vindicates the entire experiment.

So there you go. To all the PSG-pickers who post their teams with Haaland up front - save your money, you can do just as well with Phil Jones there instead!

Board expectations in this game can be downright ridiculous.

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 04:08 PM PDT

I take over St Mirren in Scotland, and the board only demand that I avoid relegation, so naturally, I win the league. Next season, the board demands I win the league. I win the group in Champions League but lose the first knockout match, and end the season nr. 2 in the league just one point shy of the league winners and with a much better GD. What happens? I am immediately fired.

Worst of all, this was a multiplayer game with 3 pals.

Thanks Sports Interactive, I didn't want to play your games anyways.

Disclaimer: I've had a long week, so I've had a few beverages.

After a long day nothing helps me unwind better than some FM. No other game gives me as much enjoyment as FM does. It's fun, engaging, difficult and unpredictable. I just love it. How are your last FM20 saves going? What's your first FM21 save going to be?

I hope this post finds you and your family in good health and good spirits.

Inspired by the story of the legendary centre forward Phil Jones courtesy of u/hurball, I am thinking of starting a save where everything is inverted at Newcastle United.

The world will witness my tactical acumen as I turn every tactic on it's head.

    4-2-3-1 gegenpress?

Nope, it's the sheer masterclass 1-3-2-4 long ball strat.

A prolific Dwight Gayle upfront with a solid Fabian Schar at the back?

Nope, let's have Fabian Schar pop up with those goals along with some maniacal defending by the tallest defender Dwight Gayle, with Saint-Maximin cutting in as the left wing back and DeAndre Yedlin speeding forward on the right wing.

Defenders become centre forwards, DMs turn into creative maestros at CAM.

Everything is allowed as long as it's the opposite of what's accepted.

    Why Newcastle?

Because I can't think of many other clubs with loads of cash and still fine with idea of relegation.

So, would you guys be interested in reading about our exploits in the future as I outclass the Guardiolas and Bielsas of the world?

PS - Do let me know if you guys have any suggestions regarding the club selection. It would be helpful if it's top flight, has cash and is cool with the idea of going down. I can hardly imagine myself surviving 3 months in any job with this whackjob of a task. But I'm looking forward to making a mockery of football as we know it!
