Sacked by Manchester United and it is now my life mission to topple them

    Posted: 14 Oct 2020 05:55 PM PDT

Let me start this by saying I used to not really understand why people got emotionally invested in their saves, but I now 1000000000% understand.

I started a save with Manchester United and was 3 seasons in. I'm not very good at the game so I started with a good team so I can learn the ropes and the meta before starting an RTG.

I completely set the club up for future success by scouting all of the wonderkids from Brazil and other South American countries and signing them. I signed Mbappe, Haaland, Sancho, Leon Bailey, and other insane players. Lost out on winning the league by one point while winning 2 trophies in my last season and got sacked. Was going to quit and start a new save but about a week later (in game) I was offered the job by Chelsea and I knew I had to take it. Manchester United are currently about 13 points clear and are dominating (with the players I brought in) but mark my words, I will dominate them. Ed Woodward, you will pay for this.

Despite what people think, great fullbacks are NOT difficult to find/make

    Posted: 14 Oct 2020 04:59 PM PDT

So I think there's an ongoing consensus that it's difficult to find great fullbacks or wingbacks, and so they often splurge out on them. But that shouldn't be the case.

The trick is to NOT look for someone who can play in the LB position. Instead, convert your CB/CDM/CM/LM/LW into a wingback instead!

The real world examples of this working are obv Fonzie Davies, Bukayo Saka, even Valencia and Young. I've actually had great success converting Marcos Llorente in Fm19 into a RB . For me, you want to be looking for a few important stats if you want a great FB/WB and that includes the following main ones:

Defensive attributes (tackling/positioning/marking), general mental ones (Work Rate/Stamina/Fitness/Determination) and going forwards (dribbling/crossing/first touch). Obv a good pace as well.

This is why if you look at LW, they have all of these stats except for defense, which can be trained individually (plus we see these types of people in LWB positions nowadays, people like Adama Traore and Davies who can't really defend but have great pace). Marcos Llorente is a great example of a fast agile Cm/CDM who can defend and can kinda go forwards as well. Just train his movement going forwards and then chuck him on the right and he'll do a great job. Just look at (for example) training Saka or Davies to defend better and they can be great LB's instead of even being LWBs.

First game of the season.. have a contract offer to Florentin Luis to fill my BBM spot. I don't think Moriba likes the idea of being replaced!

Using Data Visualisation and Coding in R as a scouting strategy.

    Posted: 14 Oct 2020 09:30 PM PDT

Using Data Visualisation and Coding in R as a scouting strategy.

Yesterday on the reddit I posted my first entry in to using data visualisation and coding in R for Football Manager as can be seen here: https://www.reddit.com/r/footballmanagergames/comments/jaxifq/data_visualisation_and_r_coding_with_football/

Today I'm going to expand upon that post by providing some practical application to using such methodology. The following post is an adaptation of a thread I just uploaded to the official SI forums that I thought would be an appropriate continuation of my post on the subreddit yesterday.

    So. A case study.

I've decided to target a somewhat niche area that I believe is overlooked during squad building, training and tactical brainstorming - the full backs. It is no secret that over the past couple of decades in football there has been a massive emphasis on using full backs as the "extra man", overloading wide areas of the pitch and generally providing genuine creativity to a side. Nobody needs this explaining to them, but this is the basis of the "investigation". For my first piece of "work" on these forums, I've decided to simulate in full match detail every single match in the top 5 European leagues for the 2019/2020 season using a relatively up-to-date transfer database (post-Bale arriving at Spurs anyway!) as a means of having a thorough data set to manipulate.

    The Process.

Once the season was simulated, these are the filters that I selected to find the appropriate database of full backs. It's a simple set of filters really; the player must have played at least 2000 minutes of football in all competitions across 2019/2020, be currently contracted to a side in the top 5 European leagues and be either a natural right back or left back. I opted not to include wing back as I personally only ever play a back 4 myself and I felt as if including wing backs may have 1) included more advanced wide players also natural at wing back which would have skewed the data set and/or 2) meant that the data set was somewhat biased against out-and-out full backs in a creative sense, which is what I intended on looking at.

Filtering done, it was time to pick a couple of variables that would be appropriate for assessing the overall build-up play inclusion and creativity of the 218 full backs discovered within the data set. In the end, I opted for "passes completed per 90 minutes" and "key passes per 90 minutes". I believe that these two variables speak for themselves - I wanted to see which full backs completed a lot of passes and also which full backs were creative with their passes. With filtering and variables selected, it was time to create a graph that was 1) visually appealing and 2) actually painted a picture of what was going on.

Here's what I came up with.

Apologies if this isn't the prettiest - I did warn you I'm a novice!

I believe that the graph is quite self-explanatory, but I'll delve a little deeper. The idea of splitting the scatterplot in to quadrants rather than using a line of best fit was to create a simple way of identifying which players were above/below average in certain categories. Towards the bottom left of the graph we have players that completed a low number of both passes and key passes, whilst towards the top right we can see players that completed both a high number of passes and key passes. The other 2 quadrants are labelled directly for ease of understanding. With that out of the way, we can start to highlight some players of high importance within this data set.

    Gaetano Letizia

I believe this player to be outright the most impressive full back SPECIFICALLY focusing upon these two variables within the data set. Note that I am not suggesting he is the best overall full back whatsoever, but when considering just these two variables - his output is outstanding. He is head and shoulders above the competition in regards to creative passing (well - he is followed closely by Kimmich but I haven't yet checked how many games he played in midfield for Bayern!). Let's take a deeper look.

    Player Report

    https://preview.redd.it/kfn8ohrlr6t51.png?width=1173&format=png&auto=webp&s=39809ab4c13787dc501bbfbbb1dbdd033b270506

Whilst I do not need to state that he is nowhere near the levels of players such as Trent Alexander-Arnold, I propose the question - does he HAVE to be?
Let's bring this post back a little towards training and tactics. What Letizia IS good at is being creative. A vision attribute of 15, crossing of 16, acceleration and pace of 16 and 15 respectively partnered alongside traits often undervalued by the FM player base such as "Gets Forward Whenever Possible", "Tries Long Range Passes" and "Likes To Beat Man Repeatedly" have caused him to produce truly elite creative output (including 7 assists) for a shoestring-budget Benevento side predicted to place 18th in Serie A before ultimately placing 15th. FIFTEENTH and he produced elite creative output "nearly" matched by only Joshua Kimmich of 2nd-placed FC Bayern.

I feel like this can teach many lessons about what it's important to look out for in a player. Whilst star ratings and wonderkids can be tempting, you can still get a 29-year-old full back with just 12 passing to be a creative force for your side. Letizia is a player that also enjoys big matches, is fairly consistent and does not really show any signs of injury proneness, mixed with a fairly ambitious personality. Let's take this just one step further before wrapping things up by excluding any full back valued above £4m in the data set.

Full backs valued at under £4m

    A league of his own

I'm going to wrap this up here and let the data vis do the talking - but taking the time to create things like this can, in my opinion, provide the player valuable insight in to potential transfer targets. Whilst there is no guarantee the player will succeed for the player - is there EVER a guarantee a player will succeed (other than Rhian Brewster on loan, nothing tops that lets be real!)? The next steps for me are to begin creating data vis that present more of a "full picture" about a player, including a mixture of defensive, attacking and other output. Alongside that, taking the time to investigate the player further such as thoroughly checking their coaching/scouting reports, traits, individual attributes and so on will aid in hopefully getting closer to guaranteeing the success of a player.

I'm open to any ideas - but I think I want to focus specifically on creating more "complete" data vis to help analyse players like Letizia that stand out next time, as well as starting to review the player on a match-by-match basis and see what is causing them in-game to post such output. Thanks to anybody that read this far, as mentioned previous I'm a genuine novice at doing this and would appreciate any feedback on the methodology, visualisation, presentation and so on.

I'll be posting small updates over at https://twitter.com/StatSav that I've also just started for more bitesize content and to have more streamlined interaction with likeminded stats nerds - once again thanks to anybody that read this far!
