New Years Resolution: The Infamous Ipswich: A "Moneyball" Reddit Series". Posted: 20 Sep 2020 02:25 PM PDT So. Before I start, I'd just like to thank the small crowd of people who upvoted and commented on the first 2 posts. It means a lot to me and shows me that I'm doing something right. I have listened to what some have you said in the comments and will certainly be implementing new interesting ideas that have been suggested. Now with that said, into the write-up. In the last post, I had concluded the transfer dealings and preseason set up before the first game kicked off. Everything seemed to be in order and I was confident in me and my team's ability to challenge for promotion. The first month was...Enthralling. August: The month of August came with 8 games. We finished that month with 4W, 2D, 2L. We picked up a win in our first game over Plymouth 2-0 with goals from fan-favorite Luke Woolfenden and Ollie Hawkins. Unfortunately, Hawkins picked up a knock in that first game and would not be featured in the squad for the next 6 weeks. The 2 losses came to Lincoln in the League 1-0 and Bristol City in the carabao cup 2-1, which let's be honest, isn't important. September/October: September and October were interesting months. There are numerous games I can recall where the team would gain a 1,2-0 lead but fail to hold out until the end of the game. This saw us draw with teams like Portsmouth and Gillingham and pick up an unfortunate loss to Doncaster 3-2, irritating. The team however seemed to be more comfortable with each other on the pitch. Stringing together plays and looking relatively good in transition. As I mentioned earlier, the loss of James Norwood left space up top for someone to fill, and to my surprise, Moussa Sylla was keen to fill it. The 19-year-old Frenchman stepped up to mark, scoring 7 goals in 11 games for the side in the months of September and October. This helped our side tremendously to remain in contention for promotion, often grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck and earning points for the team by himself in various games and earning his place in the first 11, his to lose. November: November was quite good, we ended the month with 4W,1D, and 1L which came in the Leasing Trophy. Again, something I was not keen on being competitive in. We picked up some great wins against Fleetwood and Crawley, and the side seemed to be finding the creativity and consistency going forward. Miguel Baeza was beginning to find a home in the centre of the park and was doing quite well to play the ball into space for the forwards, who were having trouble breaking the line often in games. The team was starting to come together. I noticed a great deal of fluidity in attacking chances and some of the combinations play the midfielders were pulling off would make you think Peps Barcelona came down on a Wednesday evening and give them a couple of pointers. Alan judge also had a great month and found himself with a few on the tally sheet despite arriving late into the box in attack. December: December however saw, inconsistency. We picked up back to back losses against Mk Dons and Wimbledon. I felt like the team started to feel the pace of the system and as a result, form was dipping. A lot of the games finished in disappointing draws as we failed to put the ball in the back of the net despite having multiple scoring chances in games. We finished December out with 2W, 3D, and 2L. This left us with a record of 11 Wins, 11 Draws, and 3 Losses. We find ourselves in 5th as of New Years Day. General Analysis: Watching many of the games, I felt like we were unlucky. Despite Moussa Sylla having great scoring form, we failed to score in games where I felt it was easiest and scored in hard games where I saw nothing but stagnancy. The system tends to rely on the wing-backs to come up with high offensive numbers and I quickly noticed that players on both sides did not possess such creativity to do so. On the right side, Kane Vincent young has been impressive defensively. He averages a 7.1 match rating as of New Years Day and has had exciting defensive numbers, completing 94% of tackles with an average of 4.88 tackles won a game. His offensive numbers have been par as of late, completing 86% of passes and making 3.36 successful dribbles a game. I did not expect him to perform in the way he has and he has shown me that he has room to grow into a great player providing he gets the necessary game time to do so. Stephen Ward on the left side was someone I had thought would do better then he has and I feel like I could chalk down the team's inconsistency to him. To put it lightly, he is not the fastest and I quickly noticed him getting caught out of position in defensive transition because he fails to get back on time. Now I'm a simple man and my idea of football is also very simple. I prefer to attack. And, if you can't defend very well but are great going forward, 9/10 times you're in my team. Stephen Ward fits this description of the player I'm referring to. He's offensive attributes seem to be quite good for the division he is in and I felt this was enough to see him start but he failed to justify his place in the team with those offensive traits and also made me rethink my idea of football. Defense wins titles and I think his lack of productivity reiterated that to me. He produced a mere 2 assists from open play despite being quite high in attack. His stats were also not great, completing only 1.27 dribbles per game which I understand is not his forte, but if he's only assisting twice in 25 games and for his passing ability, you would expect more. To reference the analyst report: "9 Of the last 25 Goals conceded have come from the left side of the pitch". It's clear that the left-back position is something I need to look at in the January window if I would like to see better offensive numbers in that position. Other players that I expected to perform like loan pairing Conor Gallagher and Aaron Connolly, I was unimpressed by. Key team stats: Games Played: 25 Goals Scored: 34(9th in Division) Goals Conceded: 17(All from open Play)(3rd in Division) Top Scorer: Moussa Sylla (12 Goals) Most Assists: Alan Judge (7 Assists) Highest Average Rating: Miguel Baeza (7.24) Best Pass Completion: Idris El Mizouni (96%) Conclusion: The season is not over. As I said the squad is growing, and can only get better. While we have not performed to the level required to get promoted, I feel the second half of the season is something we can capitalize on, and with players becoming more familiar with the style of play I've implemented, we are most certainly on the up. Join me in the next installment where I recap the January transfer window where we may put the "Moneyball" strategy investing in the squad and we close off the first season, discussing what we did right and wrong.
