Playing as Tre Fiori in the San Marino league, I signed a 6'7" central defender. Because of his height and heading ability, I converted him into a striker - he's now scored 20 goals in 14 league appearances including 10/10 penalties!

My angry football fan brother lost a comback so hard, he's just sad.

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 04:55 AM PDT

My brother is an angry football fan. He's a Chelsea fan on top so I am sure many of you can hear him screaming "KEPAAAAAA!!!" already and throwing pillows to limit the destruction of his rampage. Well like many of you, we play with relatively small teams to bring them to glory but we are babies so play in only the second tier of English football. I use Derby and he uses Brentford. We both gained promotion me being second and him being 6th and through in the playoffs. Because of that, even though I always have a high finish, he mocks me (like brothers do) that I have no silverware while his cabinet has a freaking PLAYOFF trophy.

So yesterday, he was actually in the running to win an actually trophy, the Carabao Cup. As a team that is fighting against relegation he was ecstatic. I always get knocked out in the first round to third round of any cup. While in the semis, he eagerly watched the draw with the options. Chelsea, Watford or Man City. He really wanted Watford but we all know how poetic football manager prefers to be.

The first leg was rubbish, 3 - 1 loss against Chelsea. Screaming his head off at every key highlight. Can you blame him? This is very early game being his 4 year in the job and his first semifinal. The second leg was ... maddening.

I actually watched this one with him because it was tension was high. Chelsea scored first to make the aggregate 4 - 1. Pissed to be losing more, he re-did his whole tactics. All of a sudden he managed to get 2 goals to end the half 1 goal up(2 - 1/4 - 3). Second half begins and this is where time becomes relevant. 70th minute he gets a 3rd, enough to for the match to go to penalties. He increases the defensive roles and added time wasting. It was time to shut down. Then horror struck. An 88th minute goal by Chelsea. Shattering all hopes and dreams. The is almost no time left. So screw it!!! Who cares about defending!!! He puts both of his full backs on Attack like a mad man and turns off time wasting. Go out in blazing glory. You never know what will happen in 5 minutes of extra time.

95th minutes. 95th freaking minutes, one of his full backs wins a free kick. And they SCORE. On a whim, he trained them for the free kick attacking routines and it paid off. Game Over. Penalties.

On the 5th penalty, his attack midfielder misses a penalty. He was contemplating taking him off but didn't want to change a winning team. He doesnt even know if the other guy would have been better at taking the penalty but he was to gutted to react. No shouting, no screaming, no throwing pillows. My boy needed a hug.

He didn't leave the match stats screen until the today. All he could say is "Tell my story" and that's why I am here. We are both curious about anyone else's gutting comeback fails. Sorry for any typos and I pray you all get wingers who pass rather that shot at the side netting. Cheers.

    1250~ Hours of FM19

    1250~ Hours of FM19

    Visual Summary of FM19

With FM20 free on the Epic Store, I have finished my last save of FM19 - a quick Spurs two-season save, grabbing 1 of each trophy possible in England (not by design, just how it happened).

I wish there was a feature in FM to get a summary of all your activities. Because there isn't, I went through all my saves to compile the above information. It's a nice visual representation of 24 Clubs and 1 Nation. There is probably some other clubs I jumped on, but never went ahead with.

It's really interesting to see that I either finish a save after 1 or 2 seasons, or I go on for 7. No in-between!

I had very bad luck in the Champions League. AC Milan was the one where I wanted to win it sooo badly, but always missed out.

That said, I'm proud to say that everything achieved above was without the use of Wonderkid shortlists, or downloaded tactics. In 1200~ hours of FM19, I've always tried to create my own tactics, and sign players as they come up in my scout reports.

I've learned so much and looking back especially on that first Leicester save, it's a bit terrifying to see how I was trying to play the game back in November 2018.

By the way, Real Madrid was a nightmare of 2 seasons. Athletic Bilbao was similarily horrendous. Spain was my cryptonite in FM19.

On the Up: The Infamous Ipswich: A "Moneyball" Reddit Series.

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 07:48 PM PDT

    Side note:

Write up Structure is going to as follows for the new Championship season in the next installment and going forward in general:

    "Brief Overview"

    "Performance Breakdown in monthly order"

"Transfers, Transfers, Transfers" Poet and Vuj ™

    "Team and Player Analysis"

    "General Stats"

    "Conclusion"

This is a more organized structure to follow and people can navigate to their favorite part much quicker following a structure like this.

    So.

How did we do? Well, were going up! Better yet, we won the league!

So how did it all happen? Well in the last installment, I had discussed the issues within the team and looked to resolve them quickly so we can close out the season successfully. Obviously, I've stated that we won the league so I did in fact resolve them and was able to really kick on with the team as I had planned to do. So what happened after the last episode? Let's have a look.

    January:

In January, I was looking to fix the goal-scoring problem as well as resolve some of the fluency in the backline. I discussed the problem with Stephan Ward at Left Back and I was keen to resolve this. Surprisingly, Ward was sought after in January, and seeing I was not looking to have him in the squad, I sold him. He was shipped off to Cardiff for 140k, his initial value. Ollie Hawkins and Freddie Sears had also requested to leave due to the lack of game time and I saw no reason to keep them, so I accepted any fee on par or above their value. Hawkins left for 81k and Sears went out on a loan to Burton in a loan to buy for 207k.

It was unlikely they would find their way into the side and at their peak age, It was only right to move them on and create room in the squad for young undervalued players.

"5. Sell your players at the right time: when they're around 30 years old"

This gave me an itch to recruit so I went out and did so.

    Transfers January:

    In:

    Ivan Martos, 22(925K)

    Alessandro Bassoli, 29(400K)

    Eddie Salcedo, 18(Loan)

    Miguel Baeza(725k)

    Lewis Wing 24(3M)

    Vinzenz Jager(Chief Scout)

    Out:

    Allie Hawkins(81K)

    Freddie Sears(Loan to buy,207K)

    Stephan Ward(140K)

    Janoi Donacien(140K) (Leaves in Summer)

Left-back was the key position. I decided to promote Tommy Smith to the first team from the U23s. The 18-year-old looked like he could be of use but was not good enough to start in the side so I felt recruiting him would give the first team Left Back the odd rest in less demanding games. In house recruitment was a rule stated in the "Moneyball" theory I referenced in the preface write up so I felt it was a good idea to give the young lad a run.

"10. Don't buy players if you don't need to: develop a youth network and try to develop your own players"

So to replace Stephan Ward, I purchased Ivan Martos from Almeria for a fee of 925k. 22, great passing ability, quick and determined. I felt that the price justified the player. He had 2 goals and 6 assists for Almeria before switching to England, averaging a 7.11 rating. The scouts found a really good replacement to fit right into the side so I was satisfied paying the money.

To go with that, I bought Alessandro Bassoli from Pordenone. I was looking to find an experienced Left-footed Centre Half to add more passing fluidity on that side and found him listed for 400K so I decided to invest. He also is relatively fast for his age so buying him allowed me to implement the offside trap as I could trust that he could keep up with quick forwards in the league without any major concern. He averaged a 7.10 in the Italian Serie B side that were 3rd in their respected table at the time I bought him. At 29, I understand he may have 1 or 2 years left in him but I felt he was massively underrated by his club and saw no other option but to buy. This in my eyes, resolved the rumbles in the backline so I decided to move on to the forwards.

The side has an abundance of forwards to choose from but none other than Sylla I felt I could trust. Aaron Connolly was too inconsistent and Kayden Jackson I preferred to be a super-sub as he has a massive amount of pace needed to upset the opposition defence in the 10-20 minutes he played towards the end of a game. I wanted creativity. Someone who had a bit of flair and was determined to do well in any position or role they played in. Eddie Salcedo was someone I had looked at and he fit this description as he was listed for loan from Inter due to not having played a game for the first team all season. This was a massive punt. However, after seeing Moussa Sylla come good with his chance in the first team I felt youth up top was moving in the right direction. Having raw creativity and the ability to make something of nothing is what young players are capable of and I felt Eddie was the perfect fit. This led me to make the change from a Pressing forward to a False 9. Eddie would be allowed to drop deep and roam, essentially playing a "Messi Role" while Sylla looked to break the opposition line. I recognized that instructing one of my forwards to press relentlessly was not efficient as many of my players surrounding him would not look to close off passing lanes unless it was in the middle. Therefore, having Eddie drop deep allowed the opposition side to play the ball past the first line of engagement and my players would then initiate a press. The side became much more effective with this tactic in the division as most teams were not stacked with creative players in defence or deep midfield roles and this essentially allowed me to "Unlock" my team's ability to play the ball fluently.

Miguel Baeza I bought as his loan spell at the club had proven highly successful. He was becoming a key figure in the way the side play and I felt for 725K, it was a no brainer. I also appointed Vinzenz Jager as Chief Scout just to improve the recruiting staff and establish a structured recruiting system. He, as Chief Scout, would take charge of meetings and assigning scouts to find players based on the kind of football I wish to play at the club. This I believed, was enough to conclude my "Del Boy" dealings in January. A name I have been associated with from friends who I play FM with on occasion.

However, 1 more player was suggested to me by the scouting staff right before the window closed which I felt was a good fit for the club. Lewis Wing at Middlesbrough was brought to my attention as he was listed by the club for a mere 3 Million Pounds. With a scout rating of 91, I was interested. Wing looked to me like a highly technical player and with the right role, could prove to be dangerous. Being 24, he was highly underrated by the club, mainly for having only 3 assists from the 6 position in 8 appearances. I gathered the club having got him on a free from Semi-Pro side, Shildon, were quite happy to let him go for 3 Million Pounds. However, his importance to the side in the next few months was an important factor in our promotion and I feel we have yet to side the best of him in this side.

With this, our transfer business was done. And, I believed, we had everything we need and more to push for promotion.

Lets breakdown the team's performance month by month and see how we managed to win the League title.

    January:

Many of the players mentioned in the transfer section of the write-up other than Bassoli and Martos were signed and registered towards the end of January and therefore did not play. This month was essentially a test to see how the squad would perform with a lack of quality in the side and tired feet. January was surprisingly consistent considering this. We finished out the month with 3W, 3D, and 1 loss to Middlesbrough in the FA cup which I wasn't overly worried about. The side was failing to capitalise on their chances but the left side looked visibly better going forward than it had previously. We only managed to keep a single clean sheet in this month but that's natural with a new center-half coming into the side. Centre halfs must have chemistry and know the way they eachother play and where there counterpart is going to be when one is on the ball so while I recall Luke Woolfenden making 2-3 critical errors leading to goals, I felt it was understandable considering the circumstances. In the month, the side picked up a thrilling 3-2 win over league leaders Hull in this time, Scoring goals in the 84th,87th, and 90th minute having conceded 2 in the first half. A 4-2 win over Plymouth was a good showing of the side becoming accomplished in breaking down low block, direct playing, and generally average defensive sides who we would normally struggle to beat. Things were turning good.

    February:

The form was carried on in February. All our transfers had been concluded and with the additions of new key players, I was very interested to see how we would do. The overall month was a success. We finished the month 4W 2D 1L. All 4 wins came with clean sheets which was a good feeling. Again, doing something right. We picked up a 3-0 win against MK Dons and Lincoln in that month and the squad was taking each game at a time. I was confident after this month that my signings would lead us in the right direction at the end of the season. We also lost Alan Judge in this month to a broken ankle which was unfortunate but gave allowed Conor Gallagher to get another chance in the side.

    March:

March was a quiet but significant month. Only 3 games. We won 2 and lost 1. A heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Shrewsbury away at the start of the month. We looked flat in that game and the squad was relatively tired. Understandable but still a morale knocker. However, we bounced back. Picking up solid wins against Fleetwood and Wimbledon. This put the club 1st in the table and I was honestly shocked that other teams failed to get away at the top of the table during our struggle at Christmas but the signings really helped us to close out the season in style and March was a great reference point to show this. A real feat in which Sir Alex Ferguson himself would admire.

    April/May:

April was nothing short of brilliant. We really showed our strength and the system was at its peak. We finished the month with 5 Wins and a Draw in our 6 games, conceding only 1 goal in those 6 games. 1-0, 2-0 wins which is something synonymous with this system, really showed me that the team was confident in playing the system I had asked, holding onto the ball and waiting for the right opening and playing the pass that allowed the forwards to run into the box and reap the rewards. The 3-1 away win at Rochdale sealed the title for us with 2 games to go. Aaron Connolly came good scoring a brace in this game and finally showing me he can play in this system. The month of May gave us one final game in which we won away at Charlton 3-1 and ended a tremendous season.

The "Key Season Stats" to finish the season:

    Player:

Top Goalscorer: Moussa Sylla(21 Goals, Joint 1st in League)

Most Assists: Miguel Baeza and Alan Judge(10 Assists, Joint 12th in League)

Highest AVG Rating: Miguel Baeza(7.29, 2nd in League)

    Best Pass Completion: Alessandro Bassoli(93%)

    Team:

    Goals Scored:74(4th in League)

Goals Conceded:35(2nd in League)(7 from Set Pieces)

    Tackle Completion: 92%(2nd in League)

AVG Passing Accuracy: 87%(1st in League)

    Clean Sheets: 25(1st in League)

That wraps up the first season with the Infamous Ipswich! Make sure to stay tuned for the next installment, where I look to improve the side in Preseason through in-depth tactic analysis and "Moneyball" shenanigans as we aim to get the club ready to take on the gruelling championship. Arguably the hardest division to get promoted in. Its gonna be a lovely one...

To cap the first season off, I'm gonna leave the write up with a quote taken from Michael Lewis: "Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game"

"No matter how successful you are, change is always good. There can never be a status quo."

    Mon the Blues!

What's your current career on FM?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 01:46 PM PDT

Hi guys! I'm very curious about the career you're having right now in your most current save. It's my first save, I've been playing since this summer.

I started of as a manager with zero reputation (Sunday League player experience) and somehow managed to get a job interview as international manager of Japan. I've had a great time there and led the team to the World Cup group stage and managed to win the East Asian cup twice in a row (not the biggest achievement, but hey, it's silverware).

After 3 years I wanted something different and quit the job. Next destination: Villarreal. I arrived in February when the club was 13th in LaLiga and finished the season as 8th. The new season I bought a few decent players (Kabak, a very good regen and a backup striker). Somehow I ended up being 16th after 7 games - I just couldn't turn things around. I got fired and I'm currently (December) negotiating with Besiktas.

    2019 - 2023 | Japan 2023 - 2023 | Villarreal 2023 - ???? | Besiktas/Fulham/Suggestions?

    How is your career/save going?

    Problems Scoring

    Posted: 22 Sep 2020 05:50 PM PDT

I've finally gotten a decent tactic going on FM 2020, we create plenty of chances for our attacking players. However, the opposition goalkeepers seem to save EVERYTHING. I mean, I had one game where we had almost 20 shots on target, only scored 2 goals. Their keeper had an amazing game, of course. Best saves I've ever seen.

Anyone else running into this? Sorry if this isn't an issue for anyone else, it's just driving me insane to watch these keepers save so many shots.
