Stade Rennais FC | Part II | Finding our feet Posted: 07 Sep 2020 02:43 PM PDT First things first, let's see the new boys. There's a few. The most unknown of our January buys is Manuel Ugarte. The 19 y/o defensive midfielder wasn't rated by my scouts, but with an average rating of 7.95 and 6.78 tackles won per ninety in the Uruguayan Primera Division, he's worth a punt for £2. From league rivals Paris Saint-Germain, 28 y/o Belgian Thomas Meunier has signed for a robbery of £950k. He'd been cast aside to the transfer list, and with loanee Kevin Malcuit suffering injury problems, a more permanent wing-back option is appreciated. With a hopeful return to French football, Michy Batshuayi has signed for a total of £11million. He scored 17 goals in his last Ligue 1 season, before registering just 20 goals in his next four years of football. I love a failed wonderkid, and think I can get Batshuayi - who plays in the now rare Complete Forward role - a decent goal tally within the walls of Roazhon Park. Jakob Johansson and Jonas Martin have left the club for a combined £3.15million to Olympiakos and Leicester respectively, neither having started a game in our first six months. Essentially, I've essentially traded two deadwood players for a Belgian international and a 19 y/o. Shrewd business. - The season's run-in saw us crash out of the Coupe de la Ligue in the quarters (fuckin' PSG), and the Coupe de France in the semis - losing to Lyon, which was disappointing given their position of 15th in the league at the time. The Europa League went surprisingly well, reaching the semi-final before losing 2-1 on aggregate to Paulo Fonseca's AS Roma who went on to achieve third in Serie A. The league, however, was bumpy. I'd lie if I said we hadn't dropped off, as despite achieving 45 points in 18 games, we accumulated only 36 in the remaining 20. Picking up five losses and three draws across the last half of the season, we lost second place to AS Monaco. Third place is still Rennes highest ever league position, and does qualify us for the Champions League next season. I can already hear the Bayern, Tottenham, Lazio group being read by a smug Pirlo on the live draw. The new signings deserve a review, with Manuel Ugarte stealing the show. The 19 y/o Argentine has an average rating of 7.24 across 24 appearances since he joined, with Thomas Meunier taking a respectable 7.19 after taking Malcuit's starting RWB spot. Batshuayi took a while to settle in, but provided ample competition for Adrien Hunou. Hunou took 30 g/a in 46 games, with Michy taking 12 g/a in 19 appearances. The two look to be equal level, which is honestly good now that we have secured elite European football. I can hear the music, I can see Rio in the BT Sport studio… Bring on the Champions League. P.S. Did I mention M'Baye Niang had 38 goal contributions this season!? M'Baye Niang! [link] [comments] | ||
