Trotter's Free Transfer Co. | Can you succeed in FM on free transfers alone? - Part 9 - The Finale!

    Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7 | Part 8

In which Derek "Del Boy" Trotter tries to make it to the big time without spending a penny.

[Profit so far: £77.4 million / £93 million]

[Staff members signed named Rodney: 7]

[Staff members signed named Dave: 6]

    [Staff members named Albert: 3]

Seven new players arrive in San Sebastian ready for the 28/29 season. It's Del Boy's 10th year in management. He's gone from unknown manager with 1s and 2s in all stats to a Champions League team coach sporting a Continental Pro Licence. It's been a wild ride.

    Player Movements - 28/29

From his office overlooking the Bay of Biscay, with four or five electric fans placed strategically around the room to beat away the summer heat, Del Boy watches the lads training below. A few of them are targets for massive European clubs, and he knows he can't hold onto them for long. Luckily a bunch of players are on their way.

In defence are 24yo Jonathan Romano from Chelsea; 22yo Pablo Imaz from PSG; and 24yo Francesco Gherardi from Cremonese.

Midfield is bolstered by RB Leipzig's 23yo Carlos Lopez; Man Utd reject Jose Bento; and 17yo nomad Roman Tyupin from Ukraine.

24yo Sebastiano Agovino joins from Napoli to round out the attack.

Del Boy also gets the scouts looking for more youth players to fill Sociedad's ranks, ready for any potential fallow years where the talent just isn't there on a free.

PSG hit the £45.5 million release clause for wonderkid Kike Aguirre, leaving an annoyingly large gap at AMR.

    Season Results - 28/29

First thing I realise is that Barcelona won both the league and the Copa del Rey, meaning that as runner ups in the latter Sociedad are in the Supercopa de Espana! The first match of the season gives me another chance to win a domestic trophy and tick that box (what? It definitely counts!)

I desperately hope that Barcelona are not that bothered about the Supercup and have an off day. In the 48th minute ter Stegen takes just a little bit too long with a back pass and 22yo Rodrigo, stepping into right wing for the first time since Aguirre left, nicks it off him and passes it into an empty net.

    Lucas Leiva voice: Unluckeee

The lead lasts for a beautiful 13 minutes. Despite this we are playing Barcelona off the pitch, beating them on possession, key passes, interceptions, the lot. It finished 1-1 at 90 minutes. Extra time is awful, we fall apart. Only Sadjo's golden gloves keep us in the game as he beats away shot after shot.

Then it goes to penalties. I can barely watch. First one, Schade misses. Great start. Sadjo saves. Okay we're fine. Breathe. Carlos Paz makes it 1-0. Sadjo saves again. I check my fitbit and my heart rate is at 118. Barrenetxea scores. 2-0. If Sadjo saves we win. He doesn't. Okay, left back Merino up now. Don't think I've ever seen him take a penalty. He slams it into the net. Barca score again. It's 3-2. We score, we win. Ever-reliable Konrad Laimer steps up…

My, oh my. Say what you want, that's a domestic trophy. Two of my three objectives done. I may not get £500m in transfer profit but that's not bad. What a great way to start the season, too!

Del Boy carries the trophy past the annoyed Barca fans

Our CL group draws us against Galatasaray, Leipzig and Benfica. I can't believe it. Apparently we sacrificed Kike Aguirre to the PSG gods and somehow that oil money has managed to buy us some good luck.

We breeze through Group A unbeaten, setting up a Knockout match against Tottenham later in the year. Meanwhile Sociedad keep the good results coming and by the end of December are sitting in 3rd, 4 points behind Atletico and Real Madrid. A run of good results and Sociedad are in 2nd, 4 points behind Real.

It's sometimes easy to forget that we're in 2nd and challenging for first place despite spending no money whatsoever. Real Madrid have spent £192 million this season alone so far.

Sociedad's excellent form in the run up

Our game against Tottenham rolls around and we play a cagey 2-2 draw in the UK, meaning we can win it on our home turf with a good result. Despite being dominated by Spurs we hold on to a 1-1 draw at home which puts us into the next round.

Weird thing is I'm actually not too pleased. We have a thin squad in terms of positional depth and I'm beginning to feel more and more confident about the title challenge. As we head into March Sociedad are only 3 points behind Real.

Well that goes well for about three games until we run into an injury crisis and we lose three games on the trot. Sociedad are back down to 4th. Meanwhile we get Sevilla in the Champions League quarter final first leg after a fortuitous draw. A sign from the FM gods?

Surely it could be. We win the second leg 2-1 and slip through into the semis. The Champions League semi finals! I start dreaming of Del Boy doing a Mourinho, turning doughnuts on the pitch in his yellow van. Dreams don't come true. Surely not. Can't happen. Unless…?

We play Inter at the end of April after an unbeaten 5 games in the league. I'm feeling confident, I'm feeling great. This is it. If I can at least make the CL final without spending a single penny I can likely retire this series because it doesn't get any better than that.

Sociedad secure more European football as the semi final approaches...

It's a 0-0 draw in the first leg, it's a cagey affair just like all of our other games, and I'm having to re-apply antiperspirant every five minutes because it's boiling hot at the moment and I can't take the tension.

We play so, so well over April and still don't budge up the table. La Liga is probably the worst league to try and get a smidge of success out of using this model considering the huge numbers Barca and Real post every transfer window. With ten games left in the season we're 4th and 4 points behind Barca who're top. It would literally be a miracle to beat them now.

First I have to concentrate on Inter. Which doesn't go to plan. They play us off the park in the San Siro for 30 minutes. Then Zuhaitz Merino, who could have gone to Bayern, PSG, or Arsenal but didn't want to leave Sociedad, darts in at the near post after a throw in to put us ahead.

Then just after the restart Gedson concedes a penalty, bringing down Schade. Oyarzabal tucks home the resulting penalty and just like that with 30 minutes to go Sociedad are in the final of the Champions League. A late rally from Inter sees an own goal slip in but we finish strong and its 2-1.

    Oh you beautiful pixellated man

I'll say it louder for those at the back. Sociedad are in the Champions League Final.

    The Final - Literally

We're going to Wembley for the CL final. Back to London. Back to where it all began for Del Boy ten years ago. After another strong league campaign in which the blue and whites finish 3rd, he boards the plane and heads for the home country.

Del Boy stops by Dulwich Hamlet to see how they got on. They actually made it back to the National League, and Teddy Jenks, a player Del Boy signed, is their long-serving captain and player-manager.

Del Boy shares a bottle of the finest Dillingers 75 with the old chairman and then it's back to business. It's Wembley, it's Manchester United. This is it.

The lineups for the 2029 Champions League final

Aside from a few long-timers, this Sociedad squad are made up of free players. The rejects, the discarded, those in whom their old clubs did not believe. Now they're CL finalists. Del Boy gives the lads a rousing speech, tries to lean on the bar and falls right through it. Let's get at 'em.

He leads his team out on the Wembley pitch. The first half goes pretty well. It's 0-0 and we're dominating possession. It's just not turning into any goals or chances at the moment. I feel the longer the game goes on the more chances Man U will have at getting into things. I switch the tactics to a more patient style to avoid being caught on the counter.

That caginess continues until the 86th minute. Joao Felix, brought on just a few minutes prior, stands over a 25-yard free kick. Cool as you like to slots it past our wall and our keeper to make it 1-0 with just four minutes left. Awful. Heartbreaking. I tell the lads to throw balls to the wall. Get Creative, Demand More, Get Stuck In.

    The dream dies

It doesn't work. At the full time whistle Del Boy has to collect his runner's up medal. But there's much to be proud of. In ten years he has gone from complete unknown to Champions League finalist as a manager. He's gained a Continental Pro licence, won a major(ish) domestic trophy and pushed the big boys of Europe to their limits (and the limits of their wallets).

It seems a fitting way to leave this series. I never came close to that £500 million figure in profit, but the players I've signed and their valuations have definitely exceeded that number. To reach the CL final without spending a penny is a great achievement, and to almost win La Liga of all domestic leagues is also a fine thing.

Not bad without spending a penny on transfers, really

So Del Boy calls it quits. He joined Sociedad when the club was in debt, and left it £104 million in the black.

    His record at Sociedad:

    • Games Played: 174
    • Won: 98
    • Drawn: 36
    • Lost: 42
    • Percentage: 55%
    • Players signed: 22, £0
    • Players sold: 10, £113 million

As it turns out, you can have success in FM doing nothing but free transfers. Just not too much success.

Oh, and Del Boy's career earnings? £12.25 million.

    Lovely jubbly.

    'Jacobs' ladder challenge

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 01:27 PM PDT

Never tried to storytell here before so here we go.

I've embarked upon Jacob's ladder challenge, a challenge which sees you start unemployed with no coaching badges and attempt to work your way up each FIFA ranked nation according to the current world rankings after winning a major trophy.

    Salsa Ballers FC

The first leg of this monumental journey saw us sign with amateur Anguillan side Salsa Ballers FC. First up was the AFA Presidents Cup in which we romped to the final before being ousted by the biggest team in Anguilla, Roaring Lions FC.

Next was the AFA Senior Male League, the pinnacle of Anguillan football. The season was short as the 9 sides only played each other once, giving 8 league fixtures. Salsa Ballers FC romped into an early lead in the league and ended up taking home the trophy to the A.O. Shirley Recreational Ground (the only ground in Anguilla).

The first leg of the challenge was complete, but where next?

To Wolues and the British Virgin Islands!

*unfortunately didn't take screenshots as didn't plan on posting here but will have screenshots for the Wolues leg

What a fantastic 70 hours I have put into this so far, a sport I had continually downtalked basically my whole existence has evenveloped me like no other, there has not been another game in the last few weeks that has grabbed my attention like FM2020, it has the best UI of any simulation game I have played, hands down the best simulation game on the market in my opinion. As a HARDCORE American Football fan, this game of Football (character development on my end lol) is so damn intriguing now, the amount you can learn simply by managing some random tier 4 English team is absolutely wild. Thank you SOOOO much to the Devs for being able to open my eyes to the game of Football.
