In which Derek "Del Boy" Trotter tries to make it to the big time without spending a penny.

The Rodney exodus is tough to start in Spain. Not many Rodneys, or even Daves, fancy joining Del Boy on the north coast of Spain.
A glaring issue straight away is that the club only has one LB and RB, who are both injured. Looks like a three at the back is needed for now.
I scrape together a compact 4-2-3-1 formation and hope that the youth players picking up the lack in LB and RB don't fail me too much.
The Sociedad board dropped the transfer fee retained value to 30%, and I can't blame them when you look at the state of the club's finances, it looks like one of those roller coasters guests refuse to ride on Roller Coaster Tycoon. They're £9m in debt, but we'll see what state they're in once Del Boy has completed a season.
I guess there is stability in knowing you'll always be unstable?
As we finish out the season in a respectable 8th place in the league, I realise rather quickly that clubs like to hold onto their wing backs and full backs. There are almost no good players in those positions available to pick up, unless you count aging stars like 33-year old Alex Telles or 34-year old Dani Carvajal.
Despite this I manage to capture the signings of two exceptional players before the season closes out. Carlos Paz is a 22-year old Barcelona reject already at leading La Liga level. Herve Sadjo is a 24-year old French goalkeeper at Montpellier already miles better than Sociedad's #1 and who I can't believe we got on a free.
In some big news we get our first Alberts of the campaign. Albert Gil joins as Head of Youth Development, and Albert Canal and Albert Blazquez join as a fitness coaches for the U19s. We also get a Dave in Dave Bowman as a scout.
Look at this beautiful boy
Season Results - 26/27
Del Boy's patented 5-3-2 / 4-2-3-1 goes down a treat with the lads now they have had a full pre-season with the boss man. Oyarzabal and Barrenextea are key on right and left flanks. Oyarzabal is thriving on the wing.
Sociedad are playing some crazy football. 6-1 against Sevilla, 7-0 against Osasuna, 5-4 against Barcalona. A cup run materialises to the quarter finals and by January 2027 the team is in 3rd in La Liga, too, sitting 6 points from league leader Real Madrid.
Bayern come in for regen wonderkid striker Zuhaitz Merino but he rejects the idea of signing for them, almost bringing a tear to my eye.
My other eye is on the expiring contracts. There are a few top talents running down their deals, but most are waiting until it's closer to summer. I secure some LB and RB backup in Federico Ermacora and Konrad Leimar from Serie A. They'll join in Summer.
At the end of January is the Copa Del Ray semi final. One of my original three objectives was to win a domestic trophy. If I can beat Real Madrid and get to the final I'll be close. Luckily my lads smash them 4-2 in the first leg thanks to Isco getting sent off in the 7th minute.
Aaaaand then we get crushed in the return leg 6-2. 6-2! That doesn't even make sense. It's even more annoying as the winner only has to play Athletic in the final. Ahh, well. I suppose it wouldn't have been a pure win since only 2/11 of the starting squad are my signings.
The rest of the season plays out pretty well. The team has a hiccup in the last month of the season and we slip to 4th, but still get Champions League qualification. That ain't bad for a team with no fullbacks. I've had to rely on youth team players and outgoing veterans for half the season so I'm proud.
From 10th to 4th in a season. Not bad!
What about the new boys?
- Carlos Paz - 14 goals - 11 assists - 7.49 - value £48m
- Herve Sadjo - 49 conceded - 11 clean sheets - 6.92 - value £35m - Most clean sheets in the league
Keeping a club solvent is much easier in the Premier League. The whacking great TV deal certainly helps a lot.
Despite Sociedad being £8 million in debt when Del Boy joined, the club is running a £24 million profit right now. With Champions League money on the way that can only improve.
Player Movements - 27/28
Over the offseason we lost Stanley West, our strangely-named regen Spanish CB to Arsenal in a £38 million deal. It was a bit of a shame as a lot of my new players were brought in to partner him at the back.
Five arrive as soon as the window opens. I'm most excited by Frane Jurcec, an elite centre back who Man City bought for £45.5 million back in 2022 and then proceeded to never play.
Wing back / midfielder Konrad Laimer joins from Inter to bring much needed versatility to the squad. 22 yo AMC Ludger Schade and 19 yo CM Joel D'Alessandro bring some good backup to Oyarzabal and my aging midfield.
Welcome to Sociedad, boys
We're still a bit short on the left and right of defence but Del Boy puts his faith in the young players who stepped up last season.
Having a large wage budget [£475k spare p/w] because you're not spending dosh on transfer fees is very freeing. It means that you can offer more money per week to players in order to edge out competition from arguably bigger clubs.
Season Results - 27/28
The Champions League draw takes most of my attention. It's Sociedad's first appearance in the competition since 2012/13. We draw Tottenham, Sporting, and AC Milan. It's definitely not the worst draw to get, especially as Harry Kane retired last season.
The first half of the season goes well. A new asymmetric tactic keeps our opponents on their toes and leaves Sociedad in 3rd by January. The team also qualifies for the CL knockout phases by coming second in the group.
The new players are really coming on strong. Ludger Schade has become the definition of an impact sub. Making 13 sub appearances and scoring 14 goals with 4 assists. Frame Jurcic keeps a steady 7.15 rating over 23 games. Konrad Laimer earns his (frankly massive) £115k p/w by holding the team together through injuries and depth issues.
The problem is the vultures are circling. All my best players are wanted by massive clubs and I don't (right now) have ready-made replacements. My transfer strategy from here on is to insist that I will only accept deals that go into effect at the end of the season.
Let me tell you something, the AI HATES being told they have to wait until the end of the season. Every deal they walk away from. Not my problem.
Del Boy's modified Asymmetric tactic
Sociedad get to the Semis of the Copa Del Ray again and I start getting excited. We got smashed by Real in the second leg last time. This time it's Atletico. We lose 4-2 in the first leg. But then the boys rally in the second leg to a 3-0 win. Off the final we go! A chance to strike off that domestic trophy target at the end of the season.
Sociedad play Chelsea in the 1st Knockout Round of the CL. First leg we lose 2-0. Then we draw 3-3 and get knocked out. Oh well. Not even a chance at the Europa League.
The rest of the season plays out well. Sociedad finish 3rd with 73 points, one better than last season. La Liga is still a two-horse race, as Barca finish on 101 points and Real Madrid on 82.
Ludger Schade takes over at AMC from Oyazabal and absolutely smashes the season. 31 goals, 10 assists in all comps. He's suddenly worth £67 million. I got him for nothing.
The Copa Del Ray final looms against Brendan Rodgers's Barcelona. All my players are dead nervous. At half time I tell them to relax. Jurcec gets so relaxed he forgets how to defend and concedes a penalty. Sadjo saves it, then saves the rebound.
I'm just about to get my hopes up when Barca score in the 82nd minute. So close but so far. We lose 1-0. That's a cup semi final and final in two seasons for Del Boy though!
There's plenty to build on, and with seven players already on their way from other clubs, next season is looking good.
This time next year we'll be maybe coming second?
