Trotter's Free Transfer Co. | Can you succeed in FM on free transfers alone? - Part 1

Hello. It's been awhile since I last attempted a FM experiment/story.

I've pretty much tried everything in FM by this point to both wild and mild success. But I've never tried refusing to spend a single penny.

It takes a lot of effort, resources and preloaded 442 tactics tactical nuance to climb your way from the bottom to the top. Bringing in talent ain't cheap. But *can it be*?

    The Premise

I take control of a team in the bottom division of English (professional) football and build my legacy as the greatest wheeler dealer fackin' football manager ever.

    The Rules

All transfers must be free. No fees involved whatsoever. That includes compensation fees.

I'm allowed to move clubs. Otherwise this may take a while.

Try to hire as many staff members called Rodney or Dave as possible (thanks /u/Polygon12)

    The Objectives

    • Manage a Premier League team
    • Make more than £500 million in profit from free transfers
    • Win a major domestic trophy
    • Bonus: Somehow win a European trophy

    The Manager

There is only ever going to be one wheeler-dealer. Dereck Edward Trotter is ready to don his sheepskin and shunt his way into football management.

    The hat was a problem

After some mild issues with the 3D generator I created a terrifying homunculus that sort of looks like Del Boy and got to work.

    The Team

Del Boy's favourite team is Millwall. Since we've already had an amazing story told with that club I headed a little further south from Peckham and picked Dulwich Hamlet.

The Hamlet are predicted 3rd place in the National League South, the 6th tier, and have a limited budget to get things kicked off. But they're a good team to start Del Boy's legacy.

I set up with an attacking, extremely low tempo, passing 4-1-2-3. The tactic gives the lads plenty of time on the ball, perfect since their mental skills aren't exactly prepared for tiki-taka.

Is it plug 'n' play if it's my tactic?

    The First Season - 18/19

    (I'm playing on FM19)

"Give me your tired, your poor, your under 20s yearning for some game time. That wretched refuse of your reserve teams." - sign blu-tacked to the Del Boy's corrugated iron dugout.

The first season is always going to be a tricky one to navigate. Hamlet have a small budget and an even smaller reputation. Of the 40-50 players Del Boy trials at the club only four are chosen:

    • Michael Mullings - 16 - DR
    • Decarrey Sheriff - 20 - ST
    • Aram Soleman - 18 - AMC
    • Mason Barrett - 18 - DR

Despite only Barrett and Sheriff getting a look into the first team squad, Del Boy leads The Hamlet to a second-place finish with the team he inherited. Dulwich then squeak through in the playoffs, and win the FA Trophy into the bargain.

Not bad for the first season

Despite this the first season for me personally is a write-off. Yeah sure, we got promoted but it isn't Del Boy's team. Not yet. That will come with THE PURGE all the expired contracts that occur at the end of the season.

But how did the first batch of new signings do? That's the measure of things, isn't it?

    • Michael Mullings - 11 appearances | 0 goals | 0 assists | 6.65 - Value £0 SOLD (ish)
    • Decarrey Sheriff - 26 appearances |10 goals | 6 assists | 6.89 - Value £170
    • Aram Soleman - 1 appearance | 0 goals | 0 assists | 6.30 - Value £0 SOLD (ish)
    • Mason Barrett - 24 appearences | 0 goals | 0 assists | 7.11 - Value £0

Pretty average returns, if even that. Sheriff and Barrett did some great work in the first team, but it's a little bit disheartening to see that they're total value is barely enough to buy a mid-range LCD TV.

Mullings and Soleman shipped themselves off to Scunthorpe and Morecombe respectively.

    Conclusions

Alright so Del Boy gets some silverware in his first season. The Hamlet are in the big leagues / medium leagues leagues now.

The second season transfer window beckons, as do the 1,000s of players released by their clubs and looking for the warm embrace of a second-hand sheepskin jacket.

With a bigger budget, greater reputation and more bums on seats lets see if we can't start making some money.

This time next year we'll be millionaires!

Tribute to all fallen players who chose to retire early in the game

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 10:12 PM PDT

There always be a 31 year old free agent veteran who is a consummate pro and racked up 400+ appearances in the game who failed to find a new club despite all these desirable traits

Or quick, tricky and nimble CAM whose ability sadly did not fit with the hoofball tactics of the AI manager and got released

Theres also a speedy lad who loves R.Carlos and Cafu so he dedicated his life to be a greatest wing-back in the world, only to be rejected because he is only "accomplished" the full-back position

Or your non-league hero who had to make way for more adept player. You found out in the team history page that he quietly disappeared from the game and can be found working somewhere in the office just outside the city

Sadly, the world is harsh and cruel. There are always a manager who constantly got the job despite scoring only 5 in judging player ability department and keep signing loads of unproven youngsters to eat up the wage bill.

We remembered what you've done to the beautiful game, both football and football manager

May you RIP (retire in peace)

    Condolences,

    All FM players

Signed this guy for 45m four years ago, thinking I overpaid. Four years later and he's my top scorer and the first name on the team sheet. I love Matt Ward
