    A Football Manager: Season 1 Episode 1

    A Football Manager

    S1 Ep1: Blackburn Rovers

Welcome to a series I'll be doing. The club I first picked was Blackburn because I wanted to take them back to the top. Stay tuned for more episodes and hope you enjoy!

Also, if this is getting annoying or feels like spam let me know in comments and I'll try something else, like uploading it to Wordpress and just sharing the link.

    The New Job

I was intrigued to see what kind of players we would have in the squad, and what tactics we would roll with. FM20 is my debut year, and I've not yet fully made my own tactic. I decided it was time, even if it was a massive failure, at least I tried. I looked through it all and decided on a 4-1-2-2-1 narrow formation. I used some interesting roles too, with a balance of roles that work well together and roles that suit the players at my disposal.

    Injuries

A few injuries to some good players, most significantly Adam Armstrong, was a blow but we needed to work round them and make the most of the squad available.

    Transfer Window

The lack of depth available at full back made that position my prime target. I struggled to find quality depth with only £1 million available on transfers. I decided to bring in Marcus Olsson on a free deal to give us some depth at left back. At age 30 he would do for the time being. I successfully loaned in young midfielder James Garner from Manchester United, and had a loan deal for right back Tyrick Mitchell all but confirmed until deadline day closed suddenly, which meant he couldn't make the move.

    The Season Begins

We began by (mostly) checking all the boxes in a routine win against Charlton Athletic. A Joe Rothwell set piece was headed in by veteran Stewart Downing. That was the only goal of the game, and we dominated with plenty more shots on target. My only concern was that we didn't take a few easy chances, with Danny Graham missing 2 one-on-ones.

Our second game had us as the underdogs away to Fulham in what looked like it would be a tough game. Holtby had returned from a light injury which was promising, and I added a couple extra team instructions to experiment with. I dropped Graham for Dominic Samuel in this match, and I brought Holtby into the starting lineup.

We began with a bang! Lewis Holtby scored a goal of the season contender 12 minutes in. It was a first-time strike from 30 yards, and it sailed past Tomas Rodak into the top corner. We struggled for possession after scoring, but Bradley Dack almost scored on the break. We were very lucky to still be in the lead at the break though, with our goalie having the game of his life. Our defence was all over the place, and they had a goal disallowed for offside. We were lucky but we made it to the end with the three points. I was delighted that we'd beat the title favorites and our defence seemed to tighten up towards the end.

We battered Bolton in the EFL Cup, and I was disappointed to only win 1-0 after substitute Danny Graham grabbed a goal. Olsson was the standout however, with a quality assist and a MotM performance. The 2nd round draw was kind to us. We were to face League 1 side Doncaster Rovers. Adam Armstrong returned in time for our clash against Middlesbrough, so I decided to start him up top. My faith paid off, with him putting us ahead in the first half hour. James Garner also grabbed an assist with a lovely ball through. They were very lucky unfortunately, with George Friend scoring a last-minute header to equalize against the run of play.

    Tactics Change

Another disappointing 2-2 draw against Hull, paired with the lack of goals and possession made me decide to change up our tactics to something more offensive. I swapped to a narrow 4-2-3-1, giving Garner the chance to shine and control games even more than he already has done. It appeared to work after we demolished an in-form Cardiff 3-0, then went on to convincingly beat Doncaster in a 2-1 win in the EFL Cup, where Stewart Downing easily won Man of the Match. I was happy with the amount of goals being scored, and our defence seemed to have got its act together.

    The Season Continues

We received our EFL Cup 3rd round draw. I was anxious when 7 out of the last 10 teams to be drawn were Premier League sides but considered myself very lucky to get drawn against an out-of-sorts Birmingham side, which would hopefully be a relatively easy win. The last game in a congested August was against West Brom, a tough challenge for our injury-prone side. We won thanks to a Joe Rothwell goal on his first game back from an injury. Bad news too though, as Rothwell got injured again, seriously. He is out for 3 months now with a dislocated shoulder.

    The Scotland Job

I decided to take on a challenge – managing club and country at the same time. I took charge of Scotland, who are also injury riddled. We had 2 games to play in the European Championship qualifiers. I expected comfortable wins from both games, one against Kazakhstan and the second against San Marino.

    Monthly Review

For August I think the club has done well and we are sitting in 4th place, putting us on course to reach our goal, the playoffs. My player of the month narrowly goes to Stewart Downing, who was crucial in multiple games and has been influential throughout. He narrowly beats Bradley Dack who scored 3 goals, our top scorer for the month. Biggest breakthrough goes to James Garner, who chipped in with 2 assists in 4 games, and was very consistent with no bad displays. For this month, my manager grade is a B-. We are so far unbeaten which is always good, but some shaky performances bring it down to a B.

    Why I made this

I started YouTube recently, but the series I was doing wasn't what I really wanted to do on FM. I saw people blogging, and the Millwall shithouse post inspired me to start writing my own thing. And the better thing about this compared to my YT is this is my save I play for fun, so it's been amazing to do. Anyways, hope you liked it and there are more parts on the way!

Is it just me or does football manager just love sending your entire team to the medical centre !?
