The story of Russel Tucker, the regen who scored a goal so audacious it broke my PC.

    Posted: 18 Jul 2020 06:21 AM PDT

On mobile, no screenshot, as pc is broken by this goal (probably).

Russel Tucker is - or was, depending on if I can fix the damage to my PC he (probably) caused - potentially the best English player of his generation. He's a 2 footed winger and a product of the Spurs youth setup. The Man United scouts brought him to my attention at 17 in his second youth season, he'd banged in nearly 60 goals in 40 youth games, and after my best 3 scouts gave him 5 stars I knew he had to be mine. Checked his PA (sorry for cheating, but I got excited) - 196. What.

Made an enquiry, they asked for £120m+. I started bidding at £30m, Levy said no, i considered coming back in at 50. But - glory be - he was unhappy they rejected the bid. Went all Machiavellian and declared public interest, bid again at £32m. No again, he went public and requested a transfer. Got him for £25m in the end. Ah, the modern player.

Spurs fans blew up on social media. Checked and, sure enough, he was now on their disliked personnel list. Sweet.

Anyway, my forward line was pretty established so he had to start as a breakthrough prospect. Its his first season, so he plays in the cup games. He was a bit disappointing tbh, few good dribbles, couple of assists but pretty poor avg rating. We get to the EFL Cup final and who should we be playing but Spurs. Board don't care about it so I continue playing my breakthroughs and he starts. Imagine the boos from 40,000 Spurs fans at Wembley as he walks out onto the hallowed turf.

Perhaps it got to him, because he's having a mare. 6.4, misplaced every pass, misses a sitter. But I just can't take him off. Its 1-1 in the last 10, and we're heading to extra time. The lad picks it up on the half way line, knocks it past a Spurs midfielder, and bangs it in from 35 yards out.

My PC powers off immediately. I didn't touch it, it just switches itself off for no reason. I'm pissed off and it's late so I go to bed, thinking nothing more of it.

This morning, I switch on again. Powers up but nothing on the screen. Now I'm going through troubleshooting, checking different hardware, going a bit mad.

My head tells me it's a problem with my power, but in my heart I know - the computer tried to simulate the spurs fans' hatred in that moment, and promptly broke.

TLDR; hated former Spurs player returns to haunt his old club, computer can't handle the hate, dies (probably).

My ABSOLUTE favorite file in over 3500+ hours of football manager!! Achieving 3rd with newly-promote Koln in the Bundesliga in my very first season, finishing over Bayern and tying with Dortmund. Edged out many insane results carried by a ragtag bunch of cheap wunderkinds. Story inside! Cheers.

Cheers.

A little club history: FC Koln has been through some rocky times recently. The club got relegated in the 2011/12 season after finishing 10th the season prior. Then they finished 5th in the 2nd league, got promoted the next season, went on an upward trajectory from 12th, 9th, then even 5th in the Bundesliga, before crashing magnificently in the next season at 18th and getting relegated again. Then, in 2018/19, Koln clawed their way out of relegation again and got promoted to the Bundesliga for the 2019/2020 season. That's where I came in. I thought--huh, that was Podolski's childhood club (don't know why I remembered that). Fuck it, I liked Podolski. Let's do it.

The wunderkinds: So, I started the season with 400k to work with. Luckily, my manager determination is something like 19 or 20, so went I bitched at the club to at least increase my payroll, they did. Which was huge. Now, I had like 11 mil to work with (adjusted in the finance area once I got my payroll $$). Then, I sold some dead weight and made a few mil more. With this money, I picked up a few wonder bois.

Daniel Maldini: I saw this kid in a previous file and wanted to get him just for his last name tbh. Only cost me 4.3 mil, so I said fuck it. Let's see if I can get a baller ass Maldini on my squad. Turns out he's actually talented. Wasn't expecting much at 17, but the kid has a wand of a left foot and starts with 15 fks and 15 technique as a 17 year old. Amazing! Maldini finished the season with 5 goals and 9 assists in all competitions after starting most games. Not an earth shattering number, but for how raw he was I was surprised. He was also always a threat from set pieces and opened up an entire dynamic in attack with that alone.

Alessio Riccardi: I have a friend who is a big Roma fan and I remember him mentioning him. So, I look into their u21s and I see the kid, scout him, get amazing reports and snatch him for 5 mil. Again, since he was so young (17), I didnt expect much. He ended up finishing with a modest 3 goals and 4 assists but an incredible average rating of 7.19 after starting most games for me and wins the players' player of the year award. Sprayed balls left and right with wonderful accuracy, had some beautiful runs and was a general nuisance for the opposing side in the midfield as a supporting AP. Magnificent stuff from the lad.

Fausto Vera: Again, I have a thing for names. If i see a name I like + the kid is talented, it's over. Snatched. For this one I did some googling and found him on a forum. Feels a lil nasty cuz I usually like organically scouting, but fuck it. Sue me. He puts in a solid shift as a DLP on defense duty in my gegenpress and bosses the midfield. Taught him to dictate tempo and spank some long range passes by the end of the season too.

    and then...

Midway through the season I get an influx of cash since I was doing so well. Not much, but 6 mil. Enough for another incredibly talented youngster. This time I found Umaro Embalo, a kid in Braga B who is NUTS. Fast, tricky, wonderful finishing, all at 18. The kid is dynamite. Ended up with 6 goals and two assists in half a season and had some game-winning performances alone. Absolutely loved the lad. Going to crack down my left side for at least the next decade and terrorize teams.

    Bonus contributors:

Simon Terrode: My 31 year old backup striker had to put in some work when my main striker, Jhon Cordoba, went down for 4 months. And wtf. He scored 8 goals and provided 4 assists including many deciding goals from Maldini's set pieces. Clutch as fuck.

Kingsley Ehizibue: This motherfucker. Dumb as bricks for a RWB but holy hell can he run like a gazelle with that 19 pace. Had many clutch performances and assists for me bombing down the right flank with blatant disregard for defense.

Sebastiaan Bornauw: This kid came with the club so I can't take credit there. But he was a rock all season. Was not expecting that for a 21 year old.

Team tactics/stats: For tactics, I went with a classic Gegenpress. Defended wide, worked the ball in, played through my defenders, and pressed like a bitch. Team ended up allowing 29 goals, best for 4th in the league and scored 41 goals, good for 8th in the league. So how the fuck did I get it 3rd? With a very Leicester-like 13 wins decided by just a one-goal difference out of my 20 wins on the season. Also, to add on to the insanity, my highest goal scorer only had 7 goals.

Also, not a single save scum baby. All real within the timeline of this wacky universe.

Thanks for reading!! This has been very fun to play and to share. I love reading other peoples' stories so I just wanted to put this out there. Looking forward to many more fun seasons with this squad. Cheers.
