    First Contract vs Renegotiation

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 10:28 AM PDT

A couple of weeks ago I posted about a Nigerian regen I bought for £2. Recently I left Montpellier and decided to see how much they wanted for him. Safe to say it was £2 well spent.

A football-ignorant American gives FM a go, learns about soccer, learns about life.

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 03:34 PM PDT

So some of us now have more free-time than we know what to do with, so I thought it would be funny to try out the FM20 demo, even though I know absolutely nothing about the sport. Though maybe for an American, I have a passing knowledge, but by Euro standards, I'd be living under a rock. Prior to this I could name a handful of players (Ronaldo, Messi, Landon Donovan, Megan Rapinoe, Freddy Adu). I've watched some US World Cup matches, one EPL game (Arsenal v Man Utd in 2000, Thierry Henry was what I remember), and was also randomly invited to a box at the France v Portugal Euro final -- and was like oh shit who's that tall French guy in the middle he's amazing (it was Pogba).

Anyway, strange thing is I unexpectedly ended up getting really really into FM20, after the steep learning curve, but since I know nothing about the game, was hoping someone could fill me in on a few lingering questions I couldn't figure out on my own. For reference, I'm Borussia Dortmund using a 4-1-2-3 wide with the gegenpressing presets. Using a Sweeper Keeper, 2 BPD-De, 2 FB-Su, Witzel as DM-DLP-De, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic as Mezzala-At on the center left, with Emre Can next to him as a BBM-Su. Jadon Sancho as IF-At on the left, Cengiz Under as W-Su on the right, Haaland as a either CF or AF. Marco Reus broke his legs, and not sure why but I just don't like Julian Brandt or Thorgon Hazard.

I know this is a LOT, so feel free to respond to what you care to, or just totally fine to ignore and/or make fun of me:

    1. I wanted a tall French guy running down the middle too, but Pogba wasn't interested in joining me in Germany, so my scout suggested Sergej from Lazio. I had this idea in my head he'd be dribbling up the field spinning around hapless defenders and, uh, scoring goals or at least assisting. But no, no one ever seems to pass him the ball and when he gets it, he just immediately kicks it away. How do I get him to be more involved, to do his advanced playmaking and/or mezzala'ing? I've tried 'focus down the middle', player instruction to dribble and shoot more, but nothing. Well actually he does seem to launch a lot of one-timer blasts from way out, that of course end up in the stands, maybe I'll un-click the shoot-more box. In comparison, Emre Can (BBM-Su) next to him seems way more involved. I thought AP/Mez were supposed to be the playmakers? But the thing is Sergej's ratings are always 7.2+ but no idea what he's doing. I'm even watching Comprehensive Highlights. Is there a setting somewhere that sets certain players to be a priority as a pass target? Or maybe his teammates just don't him personally? Seems like my games are all about running up the sidelines, crossing it in, header over the crossbar, rinse & repeat, but then twice a game, Mats Hummels will launch a 60 yard touchdown throw to a streaking Erling Haaland, who is like a blonde Carl Lewis here, and pops it in the goal. Dortmund, 2-nil. My CMs seem useless. Or is this what the game IRL is like? Do center midfielders exist just in case the ball strays there from the wings? I mean why tell me my mezzala needs great ball control, flair, and work rate, when he doesn't seem to use any of these...
    2. Speaking of ratings, is it like figure skating and there's a panel of judges upstairs who are giving subjective scores on technical and artistic skill, or is it formulaic like +.5 for an assist, -.2 for losing the ball, etc? Trying to figure out how Sergej gets high marks for not seemingly doing much
    3. Also Haaland has 2x the number of offsides as the next most penalized in the Bundesliga who happens to be my RW Cengiz Under. I taught Haaland "to beat the offside trap" but is he just not that good at it, or is this just the price to pay for getting all those touchdown bombs?
    4. And better to sell my wonderkids since they're anyway gonna leave once their contracts run out? I love Sancho but $128m from Chelsea sounds like a lot of money. This is what it's like IRL? I think Haaland is valued more than his release clause so he's probably gone at the end of the year too.
    5. So then do mid-sized clubs like the ones I steal prospects from, exist solely to feed young talent to bigger clubs like mine, who survive by tripling their value and selling them on to the mega-rich English and Spanish teams? Do these mid-sized clubs aspire to win championships, or is it like dare-to-dream we finish ahead of everybody else without a $1bn valuation, but honestly let's just not get relegated. Seems kinda sad? But I guess also a reflection of the real world... I tried a new game as Ajax since they seem to have a lot of great prospects, but then quit because their whole wage budget was like the same as two of my Dortmund stars... I find this system so fascinating, especially compared to much more straight-forward American sports leagues with youth drafts and salary caps.
    6. Struggling with the difference between IFs/IWs/Ws. Is it so IFs cut inside and then mostly stay there, IWs cut inside with the ball but mostly hang out closer to the sideline, and Ws stay wide and just cross it all day? So if I have attacking FBs, I want to have my higher guys as IFs or IWs to go narrow, leaving space for the FBs to go do their thing (also cross all day?). I have Cengiz Under as a W because he has high crossing ability, and Sancho as IF because of his dribbling skill.
    7. Is an "eccentric" goalkeeper good or bad? I like eccentricity IRL but doesn't seem like a good trait for someone who needs to be solid... But a high rating in eccentricity means more ecccentric, and high ratings are good? Confused.
    8. Domestic Cups. May as well lose early on, so your players don't get overworked with 3 matches a week later on? Playing all these games just to lose in the semi-final seems a waste of energy, though I suppose an opportunity to give game time to the prospects... Or do people actually care about a Pokbal trophy?
    9. Since I don't know any football players, the characters in FM20 may as well be Mario and Luigi for all I know, they're all blank slates of whom I have no favorable or unfavorable bias, except I've grown fond of a Turkish dude Cengiz Under that I bought from Roma. Is he well-known IRL? He's doing quite well for my club. Also I sold Mario Gotze real quick because I thought he looked like a brat -- is this true or false?
    10. Individual training... My asst manager keeps suggesting I end individual training "because heading is no longer a weakness", and I do what he says because I trust authority, but yo, I'm trying to make heading a damn strength! Does individual training in FM20 exist just to turn terrible stats into passable ones? Or can I ignore him and keep training Haaland in heading until he starts complaining...
    11. I scouted an 18 y/o Scottish (i think) wonderkid striker who had great skills but like a THREE for natural fitness... I should skip that one for my pressing team, right? Imagine being this kid IRL and seeing that a video game says you're the least fit, by a wide margin, player in the premiere league.... So sad. I wonder how all these ratings and attention affects the mentality of their real-life teenage counterparts. Seems like it would add unfair pressure if all these people fully expect you to become a star because FM gave you a 4.5* potential rating at age 15? Like I now know who Naci Unuvar is but couldn't name a single player at like Inter Milan. oh wait, is that where Donnarumma is?
    12. Starting to now understand the world's obsession with football.

Sorry for all this. I'm learning!!! Maybe now I'll try watching a real football match instead of 16-bit Bundesliga U-19 sprites.

    Shanghai Greenland Shenhua...hoo boy!

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 07:14 PM PDT

I'm pretty new to the game, was just coaching Albania when I got hired by a Shanghai side trying to avoid relegation. Bright side? Nearly unlimited dough. Downside? Can only have 5 international players registered for the team, and all the local talent on the squad sucks. Can only start Chinese goalkeepers, apparently all of whom are 2 stars or worse.

I'm normally not a big fan of save-scumming ("Whoops, I messed that up, will just start again from before I unwittingly made a bollocks of everything"), as it also means hours of gametime down the drain, but holy crap, this feels like I've been thrown into the deep end. Any body out there also run into this Great Wall? Or is there something I'm missing?

Celtic have won 18 out of 19 of the last league titles and generally steamroll us. The first game where we contained them and away to Celtic Park as well!

So the title race went to the last day and I was losing for most of the match until stoppage time or should I say FERGIE TIME. Just absolute, pure madness
