How to decide if a player is good by his stats in Football Manager 2020

    By fmplays.com

Just as any manager in real life has to choose one player over another to be in the starting eleven or choose a certain player to be signed in place of the others who also fall within the budget, in Football Manager it is essential to know how to choose the right players. Both the players and managers and the rest of the professions that make up the club staff have attributes that make them better or worse for a certain action or task and based on these attributes we can make a better-informed choice of our players or staff.

In Football Manager, player attributes are divided into three: technical, mental and physical and each one goes on a scale from 1 to 20, from worst to best, respectively. In the case of goalkeepers, the technical attributes section is replaced by a goalkeeper attributes section that contains the main qualities of that position. Next, we'll talk a little about each of these attributes:

    • Technical attributes: These are qualities of each player that are mostly focused on what they can do with ball possession. For a striker, for example, it is important to see his finishing as this gives us an idea of his ability to score goals. In an advanced midfielder, we would focus more on passing or long shots. This category also includes things related to plays with the stopped ball such as corner kicks, free kicks, penalty kicks or long throws.
    • Goalkeeping attributes: As a goalkeeper does not usually have much time on the ball (except in Guardiola's teams), his technical attributes are different, so we find characteristics that define the type of goalkeeper and the situations that favor him the most. Taking the example of a Guardiola team, where goalkeepers often have a lot of contact with the ball at their feet, first touch or passing are very important. For a goalkeeper of a smaller team that requires constant hand intervention, reflexes and aerial reach are two to consider.
    • Physical attributes: These are related to the physical abilities that the player has to run, jump, crash or resist during football games. It also covers issues related to your ability to recover faster between games as well as to maintain your level consistently during a game. For example, for a defender, a high value in jumping, strength and agility is important, while for a winger, a high acceleration and pace is better.
    • Mental attributes: Mental qualities are far reaching as they indicate how a player reacts to different situations in a match as well as his understanding of the tactic or his desire to be successful. For a striker, a high value in determination is good which will help in attacking the ball for score goals. In defensive midfielders, aggression and a good work rate are the most important.

This is just an introduction to how players should be selected based on their attributes, however the topic is a bit more complex since it also depends on how different attributes are combined and this will affect how the player performs in different scenarios and plays.

Sunderland 'Til I write a Guide

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 12:42 PM PDT

With our current lockdown predicament, I've seen a lot of people saying they've binge watched "Sunderland 'Til I Die" on Netflix, and want to start a Sunderland save, myself included. If you haven't watched it, I would definitely recommend it. I was sceptical but it turned out to be a brilliant watch. Anyway, I've actually done a couple of Sunderland saves now and thought I'd write a guide for anyone who is thinking about giving it a go themselves, but is unsure about the squad/club. I'm expecting this be a long and comprehensive guide, to help even those who don't usually manage "lesser" teams get to grips with the players in the squad. Of course every game will have variables, but I'm hoping this guide will help everyone. So let's start with the first team squad.

    Goalkeepers

Jon McLaughlin (Age: 31) - A solid number 1 for this level. With the team in front of him, he should have no trouble being your GK for the first season.

Lee Burge (26) - A decent back up for League One but not much more than that. Should rarely be needed in the first season. Can be rotated in for the Leasing.com Trophy games if you like.

    Left Backs

Denver Hume (20) - His dynamic potential ability can make Hume a bit hit and miss, but he's young and he's good enough to do a job at League One level in the first season either way. Assuming you don't use any tools to check his PA, just keep an eye on how he develops over the first year. If you're lucky, he'll be good enough to keep a place in the squad at championship level, no worries. Others may find him stagnating and finding his level in League One and no higher.

Declan John (24) [loanee] - One of the only players I'm not overly familiar with, the reason for which will become clear when we discuss transfer targets lol, but I did keep him for 6 months in one of my saves and he performed well in league one. 14 apps, 5 assists and a 7.44 average rating. Definitely good enough to do the job in League One, should you wish.

    Centre Backs

Tommy Smith (29) - One of two left-sided centre backs you'll start with and, for me, the most solid of the two. Quality leadership skills (16) make him a strong candidate to be your captain upon Leadbitters' departure. Invariably performed well for me at League One and Championship level Usually generates plenty of interest from the MLS and can even fetch around £3M at age 31 with 6 months left on his deal, if you're lucky.

Joel Lynch (31) - The second of your two left-sided centre backs, and probably the second best centre back you have available. If you're not too fussed about players playing on their 'preferred' sides then these two would be your strongest centre backs pairing, however I religiously stick to playing player on the side they prefer so I could't tell you how they perform together. Him and Smith are both brilliant in League One. I usually allow Lynch's contract to expire after one season due to his age, but I'm sure he'd be a decent squad member at Championship level, too.

Bailey Wright (26) [loanee] - A really good looking partner for Smith/Lynch, however he's injured for 4 months. Given his loan wages are £10,000 p/w, and the fact we have adequate numbers at centre back without him, I terminate this loan at the first opportunity (July 26th-ish).

Jordan Willis (24) - Solid Doesn't have a side preference, but your game may generate one for him. Good enough to partner Smith/Lynch in League One, as well as be a squad depth option in the Championship.

Alim Ozturk (26) - Always performs surprising well, as squad depth despite his stats not looking fantastic. No side preference, but your game may generate one. Will usually generate interest from the Turkish top flight and won't sign a new deal once that happens. Best bet is to cash in January for £1M or so.

Tom Flanagan (25) - The man who gets cut for me. Sorry Flanners. Easy enough to shift for £350k to the MLS at the start. Not a bad player but it's useful to have the extra cash and we're covered at CB. You may consider selling Ozturk earlier instead, but he's only worth about 200K to begin with.

    Right Backs

Connor McLaughlin (27) - Your only natural right back. He's no world beater but can perform well enough in League One for you not to have to worry too much. Can be kept as cover for a new right back in the championship but you should be looking to improve on him if/when you can afford to.

Luke O'Nien (24) - Naturally a central midfielder but can more than do the job as a right back too. You might find a right back you'd rather invest in and move O'Nien back in to midfield, but the squad is well balanced in midfield as it is and having O'Nien competing for the right back spot seems more logical, in my opinion.

    Central Midfielders

Max Power (25) - Where else to start but the man with a legendary name. Likes to play on the right of a midfield two or central/right in a three. Fittingly, the only goals he seems to contribute are screamers from outside the area, and he'll pop up with a fair few of those. His best League One season for me saw him win POTY with 11 goals and 9 assists. Good enough for the Championship too.

Grant Leadbitter (33) - Current club captain. A great team leader but definitely past his best. Also prefers to play on right of a midfield 2 or right/central in a 3. You'll have a tough call on keeping him for his team leaderships, or moving him on because of his lack of quality combined with high wages.

Josh Scowen (26) - Another who prefers the right side of central midfield, and he's another who seems hot and cold on different saves for me. Pros include great work rate, stamina and aggression, cons include the fact he's a bit of a dirty bastard who will probably miss at least 2 games a year through accumulative yellows lol.

George Dobson (21) - My favourite in the squad. Naturally a CDM, however I mainly use him as a box to box CM and he's brilliant there. 19's for bravery and work rate, 18 teamwork and 17 stamina plus a 16 for leadership makes him my future captain every time. Doesn't have a set preferred side but the game may generate one.

    Left Wingers

Chris Maguire (30) - Capable of playing in the number 10 role or on the left. Past his best and lacking pace but technically sound enough to make up for it, as well as being a solid set piece taker.

    Right Wingers

Lynden Gooch (23) - Another guy who has always out-performed his stats, for me at least. Despite never passing a 2.5* 'fringe player' scout rating, he made it to the PL with me on my first save, notching up 10 goals and 10 assists in League One, before another 10 goals and 9 assists in the championship, with a slightly improved match average. Also club homegrown. Generates plenty of interest from the MLS seemingly every window, so plenty of opportunities to cash in, should you wish.

Duncan Watmore (25) - Dread it, run from it, Duncan Watmore and his £12,000 a week contract are unavoidable. And that'll go up to £18,250 a week on promotion. Thankfully, it expires a week after the first season ends. He's good enough for a league one squad and impossible to sell or loan out with any worthwhile wage contribution in my experiences, so suck it up and stick with him as your back up for Gooch until his contract is up.

    Strikers

Kyle Lafferty (31) - He might be the wrong side of 30 but he's not bad for this level at all. Don't expect fireworks every week, but he tended to turn up when I needed him and hit 17 goals in 30 games in his best League One season for me.

Will Grigg (27) - He was my first choice in my first save, hitting 20 goals in 40 games, although a lot of them were penalisesHe wasn't anywhere near as prolific second time around, which resulted in him losing his spot to Lafferty in my one striker system.

Charlie Wyke (26) - Usually transfer listed when you start the game, and I always ship him out, due to only playing with one striker. Can usually get about 350K for him from an MLS team.

Antoine Semenyo (19) [loanee] - Not spectacular by any means, but his versatility can be useful as he can place out wide, too. I tended to keep him around as a third choice striker/back up winger.

    Loaned out

Aiden McGeady (33) - Another one who has wages through the roof and, unlike Watmore, he has two years left on his deal. Can be recalled to do a job on the left wing or, as I would recommend, sold ASAP. You're still paying him 4k per week when he's at Charlton, but if you recall him ASAP you should be able to shift him for about 200K with a 3K wage contribution. Still not ideal, but it's better than it could be. If you don't sell him in the first window, you'll struggle to sell him once his loan ends and will probably have to settle for loaning him out again while you pay him 5-6K a week any way.

Jack Baldwin (26) - Not good enough. Let him go when his contact expires.

    Youth Prospects

Bali Mumba (17) - A young centre mid capable of playing holding mid or at right back too, this guy is your brightest prospect. As with all of the prospects here, he has dynamic potential so it's difficult to say how good he will be. In some saves he's not even my brightest youngster but, when you get the right luck, he can turn out to be a PL quality midfielder within a couple of seasons. A perfect replacement for Leadbitter at the end of one season if he progresses well, as you can see from his 3 MOTM performances in our last 4 games of the season.

Elliot Embleton (20) - Another centre midfielder but more forward thinking and capable of being a number 10 too. Can do a job in the championship in the second year if you get lucky with his development.

Anthony Patterson (19) - A young goalkeeper with potential to be a good player. Again. if you get lucky with the PA side of things, this guy could be ready to replace Lee Burge as your back up in season 2.

    Transfer plans

Now we've looked at the players we already have, let's look at the ones we might be able to bring to the club. Your budget starts at cool £1M with little room for manoeuvre in the wage budget.Luckily, we can perform some magic and change that.

This is, of course, where plans will differ depending on your vision for the club, formation, tactics, etc. but I'll be going with my favourite, and probably the most popular shape, a good ol' 4231 looking to control possession and press high. The problem with the squad here is obviously the lack of attacking midfielders. The solution? The loan market! Bare in mind you won't be allowed a matchday squad with more than 5 loanees in, so I'd recommend sticking to 6 loanees at the absolute most.

    Loan Targets

Angel Gomes - My go-to guy for the CAM role, however he's just as comfortable on the left wing. Excellent for League One can extend the loan for at least 2 years following the first year and, if you time it right, you might be able do all of this for 0% wage contribution and 0 monthly fee. I wish I could tell you how more clearly lol, but all I can say is on my last playthrough I was waiting for some wage budget to free up early on and just checking how much United wanted to send Gomes on loan and it'd suddenly gone from them wanting 100% of his wages to wanting 0 of his wages. So just keep checking lol.

Troy Parrott - Spurs striker, definitely good enough for League One. Never loaned him in myself but definitely a solid target.

Amine Gouiri - I normally stick with my strikers, however I did decided to sell Will Grigg one time and replaced him with Gouiri on loan. He was actually below-par, scoring 10 times in 32 games. I decided to stick with him and extend the loan for the second season in the championship, and currently we're top of the league in January and Gouiri has 17 goals in 15 games and is developing brilliantly Lyon won't let me keep him for another season, though. Gutted.

Marlon Ritter - A bit different at 26 years old, I picked this guy up to compete with Gomes for the CAM role. Loaned in with an option to buy of around 700k, I mainly took a punt for his brilliant set pieces, and they definitely did help. Took the option to buy him and he's valued at just under a million now so, should net a slight profit when I cash in, too.

Maxence Caqueret - Another talented Lyon youngster, this guy has great stats for a CM if you're looking to play a possession game; great passing, first touch and technique. Did well in League One for me.

Curtis Jones - High potential left winger who will be a great asset to your squad if you nurture him. Play him enough in the first year and he'll be a stand out player in the Championship.

Billy Gilmour - Brilliant little central midfielder. Might be difficult to find a place for him in the first season but definitely worth keeping an eye on. I loaned him in the Championship and he was absolutely fantastic.

Jonathan Leko - An upgrade on Semenyo. Equally comfortable playing on either wing and can also play up front when required, too. Wasn't anything amazing for me when I loaned him, but in a different save he's currently 2nd highest scorer in the Championship so, maybe I'm just a bad manager haha.

Hiroki Abe - You'll only be able to get this guy if you play with work permits disabled via mods, or if you use the editor to change his nationality or give him a second nationality. That being said, he's a quality little left winger.

    Potential Transfers In

Harry Pickering (20) - Crewe left back. Honestly, the only person I ever buy in the first season lol. The squad is strong enough to comfortably go up with a few loanees and this guy is a great investment, in my experience. Can be picked up for around £1.7-£2M and has never let me down when used as a FB(A) in my 4231. Has a great left foot and free kick, and his value will only go one direction. In one save, after a season and a half, he's valued at £8M and generating interest from PL clubs. In another, we're in the Prem and he's valued upwards of £11M after 16(!) assists in the championship. To accommodate him I simply terminate the loan for Declan John.

Naci Unuvar (16) - I'll throw another option out there, a 16 year old Ajax left winger. You might not be able to convince him, it seems that sometimes he'll be open to a move and others he won't, but if you start the game in early pre-season, you can approach him on a "free" transfer. It'll actually cost you about 800K compensation and 15% of the profit on his next sale to AJax, but he will turn in to a world beater who can net £100M+ if you're lucky and hang on to him. Haven't had him at Sunderland myself but I've read about people who took that route.

    Potential Transfers Out

This is where is the real big decisions lie. There's a number of players you can sell for a number of reasons, but ultimately it's up to you to balance the squad. I won't include Aiden McGeady, Charlie Wyke or Tom Flanagan below, as I've spoken about their sales and prices earlier.

Grant Leadbitter - As I touched on earlier, he's old, he's on high wages and he's not really a great player any more. However, his leadership skills are brilliant, and he's your only team leader. Assuming you replace him as captain with Smith, you'll still be left with no team leader in your squad dynamics for some time, as Smith will still take a couple of months to jump from highly influential to team leader.

Will Grigg - If you want to make room for a striker then sacrificing Grigg is your only option, as Lafferty has just signed for the club. Signed for £3M, you'll be looking to recoup around £1.1M which the board won't be happy about from a business perspective. They'll get over it, though.

Lynden Gooch - Will often generate early interest from the MLS. You can choose to cash in early and try to bring in someone better on the right but bear in mind he's one of only three players in the first team squad who are homegrown at the club (the others being Leadbitter & Hume). You'll need 1 homegrown player in the match day squad at all times so if you sell Gooch, you'll obviously be letting Leadbitter go at the end of the first season meaning you'll need Hume in every match day squad in the second season, unless one of the youngsters like Mumba or Embleton develops well.

I'm sure there's a lot of people who don't like starting saves with squads they don't know, so I'm hoping this will be a help to anyone who wants to do a Sunderland save after seeing the docu-series but isn't sure where to start lol. If anyone wants any tips on transfer targets in season two, let me know! You will probably have new owners so transfer budgets will vary but I'll tell you this for nothing; Jesus Vallejo gets transfer listed for about £3M or something silly after your first season. Keep an eye on him during June and move immediately and you can get him at Sunderland. Bit of a gamble with his injury problems of course, but if you keep him fit he's pure class and will net a decent profit, no worries. And keep an eye on the clubs which comes down from the PL.

So, whether you're Sunderland 'til you die or just 'til you're bored and get offered a better job, hopefully this guide will help you on your way! :)
