    A heroes Journey

    Posted: 20 Apr 2020 04:53 PM PDT

Hey FM fans. Tonight I just won the 2034 World Cup with England and the feeling is indescribable.

Here's my story that'll hopefully be worth the read.

I worked my way up from managing Curzon Ashton in the 6th English division and taking them to the 4th before being offered a job at Huddersfield to help them get back into the premiership.

After getting in the playoff two years running I got offered a job a Schalke which was a bit of a budget cut but better players overall and youth development. First year there we came 3rd and over that summer I was surprisingly offered the job at Manchester United who finished fourth the previous year and just fired Pochettino. I gleefully took the job despite feeling very under qualified considering all I won was a handful of MOTM awards and two lower league promotions but I worked hard setting my foundations and taking advantage of the hefty budget- so I brought in all my best players from my previous clubs (Not Curzon Ashton obviously) and began implementing my tried and proven tactics- and brought in some of the most promising players from around the world with hopes of building them into world class players —— However, everything went to hell and in 200 days I was fired with Manchester United sitting at 7th and even worse they hired Thierry Henry to replace me after managing Olympique de Marseille to 2nd place in the french league three years in a row. I spent some time off. Took a holiday for the rest of the season as nobody was looking. Manchester United ended the season in 4th somehow. In the summer Schalke were looking again but I couldn't go back after taking all my favourite players away. So I saw Curzon Ashton had fallen a league since I left so decided "hey for old time sake" I really enjoyed being back in the lower leagues. Even though the games are poorer in quality the goals matter a little bit more for a strange reason. Meanwhile my name was circulating the vacant Real Madrid job. I was offered and interview that went well but the finances were just not there at that time (A transfer budget of £30m) Particularly after seeing the eye watering United balance. If I was to go big I needed the kind of budget to rebuild the team. Curzon got promoted again and that year England faired poorly at World Cup even though I wasn't following the international football scene I believe we got knocked out early in the knockout rounds and the THEN manager Sean Dyche had left to go manage Huddersfield (yeah no jokes) So I applied to the England job and got it. I gave a lot of the young lads lot of games and managed Curzon on the side. I was offered the Borussia Dortmund manager role with a spicy £250m transfer budget so I jumped on that! Whilst managing Dortmund we came 2nd the first season and won the league for the next two years before sadly coming 2nd again to Borussia Monchengladbach who had become a formidable team. Then the 2034 Seul World Cup came. I gave my assman at Dortmund control of all the friendlies and the Director control over transfers and I wanted to solely focus on the World Cup. I'm picked a team that the game gave me a bunch of backlash over. One player Trevor Steele has only just made it into the Leicester first team and hasn't had a cap before now. But his stats were good and even though his current rating was far below the rest of the squad his potential was about 4 stars so I risked it. Games go well we thrash our way through the group Stage with Trevor Steele getting 2 goals in his first game and knockout goes well with us being incredibly fortunate in our ties getting the lowest ranked teams possible. We beat South Korea in the Semi final late in extension time and play Argentina in the final. I put all my setting on being able to watch as much of the match as possible. The game is like 15 minutes long now in real time. The game is tough. Like really tough. I'm on the edge of my seat. My entire team is exhausted and players are getting injured and asking to come off but I have to let them play through it! My right midfielder goes down and doesn't get up for ages so for the sake of time wasting I take him off and bring on Trevor Steele who at this point has 6caps and 6goals despite his low rating. Then -and I cannot express my amazement enough- in 90+3mins the beauty of Trevor Steele heads home a corner and go ballistic. The match finishes 1-0 to England and the news goes mad at us being the underdog. Trevor Steele wins Man of the match and there's talk of more trophy's in the future but for the first time since joining the FM family in 2012 the game suddenly feels... finished. I never thought it could happen. I could resign from England? Bring Steele to Dortmund? But then what? I've spent so many years playing these fantastic games and it's concluded with this.

When I began playing FM I was an kid playing for his local football team who wanted to learn more about tactics. My parents didn't understand my obsession but I convinced them these games can teach me so many management, organisation and story building skills that I can take into real life. I'm now 23 years old and about to start a new job as a film producer once quarantine is over. But I feel accomplished. I feel like my journey with FM is now over- I've done all I can and it can't get higher than this

So... to all you FM fans out there "Get out there and impress me"

Edit: Accidentally hit continue and got offered the job at Liverpool! Man United you'll regret the day you ever sacked Me!!! Football manager is back baby! GOOOORRRRAAAAAARRRRRRR

On FM15 I brought FC Twente to the Champions League Final and played it when I was drunk. I accidentally picked a CB to go on goal and didn’t pick a sub keeper.

A few things I have learned after playing wayy too much Football Manager during lockdown...

    Posted: 20 Apr 2020 05:30 AM PDT

I used to be extremely incosistent when playing FM. I used to reguarly get sacked within two seasons, mostly due to a long run of bad form. But since quarentine, I have been reguarly over acheiving. Here are some of the things I've learned that I believe has helped me:

    - Tactics are probably less than 50% of the reason you may be doing badly. In the past, when I was on a bad run of form, I would always change the system. Now I make three tactics during pre season and only rotate between those. When I hit a bad run of form, the issue is 90% due to morale. Make sure to master dynamics. Now my bad runs rarely last longer than 3 or 4 games whereas before they could derail my season.

-Make sure you have the right players for your system. You want to play counter attacking? make sure that your midfielders can defend and your attackers are fast and physical. You want to play Tiki Taka? Then defending isn't so important, it's better to sacrifice your Dm's tackling ability for passing and vision - even if the role doesn't suit this more technical player. When people ask for advice regarding tactics, most of the advice they recieve is going to be fairly pointless unless: The tactic had no balance in the first place, or the person giving advice knows the team well. Making your DM with 15 passing play as a DLP isn't going to turn him into Pirlo.

    - A small squad with backups who can play multiple positions = fewer unhappy players + more chance for youth development

    - The AI doesn't 'figure out' your tactics. If you are playing well then suddenly turn to ****, the only time a drastic change in tactics may be the best solution is for when you've sold a star player that made the tactic work. It's more likely either a morale problem or due to the AI defending against you with more numbers as they see you as a greater threat. This can be fixed using the point below.

    - Set pieces and long shots are important. The easiest way to open the floodgates against a parked bus are to take lots of longshots to force corners and get the breakthrough from a set piece. When you are against a parked bus that puts 10 men behind the ball, all you need to negate a counter attack is to have 2 CB, everyone else should tasked with either creating or scoring. One of the most effective ways of doing this is putting wingers in the fullback position and setting them to CWB and subbing off your physical DM or CM for a more creative or forward thinking player

Took a kid from Ecuador. Had to loan him to Spain for 2 years because of work permits. First full season in England, promoted to first-choice GK, and this flat progress graph is my reward.

I just clocked that I have 15 international appearances when I was 10 seasons in my save. I really must've been an insane talent because I started my managerial career at 19...

Is there a database where Yugoslavia hadn't broke up and still had their football pyramid together?

I am kind of fascinated with the old Yugoslavia First League and it quirks with how it awards points differently from the rest of the world.

Getting to FM after 4 years, matchday tips please

    Posted: 20 Apr 2020 09:08 PM PDT

I had played FM 15-16 extensively. Always felt the match engine didn't respond well enough to my instructions. Tried FM18 for a bit too but felt the same. Now with the lockdown, planning to give FM20 a go. Any tips or guide on how to approach the matchday with respect to the match engine? Like what's the ideal highlights type to view to be in sync with the game and make changes if need be. What screen view makes the most sense while the game is being forwarded. Whether or not to listen to the assistant saying we are being outnumbered in midfield. And things like these.

(Assertively) We've got to guard against complacency now. Don't think the job is done.

Good news from Adelaide, Australia. We have had zero positive COVID tests out of record test numbers (in the thousands per day). Just want to encourage all of you in your isolation as it does work.

(Passionately) If we carry on today where we finished last time out, we've got a great chance!

Stay safe, remain indoors and wash your hands lads.

    Lots of love,

    Your friendly neighbourhood Australian
