Please use this thread as a place to ask questions that are specific to your save, such as:

    • "Why is my tactic not working?"

    • "What role should I play this player in?"

    • "I have £xxm to spend, who should I buy?"

If you are asking for tactical help/advice, please post an image of your formation and what insutructions/roles you have set.

As a rule of thumb, if you ask a question, answer a question. This is what keeps this thread alive and useful.

I turned Millwall into the most aggressive team in the world - Part X

    Links to Part I / II / III / IV / V / VI / VII / VIII / IX

Coronavirus has plunged the world into chaos. Countries are closing their borders, businesses are struggling, toilet roll is becoming a rare commodity, and sports fixtures have been postponed everywhere.

Except here. The Millwall shithouses soldier on. It'll take more than a global pandemic to stop this team. (Except Lee Cattermole, who retired due to a virus.)

    The Run In

Six games to go. With club finances spiralling out of control, and an ageing squad (thirteen players are over 30-years-old), it's now or never for promotion. If we fail I will consider resignation, since to my mind this is as good as it can get without Premier League money. I don't tell this to the players, though, as I cannot show weakness.

First up are must-win games against relegation-threatened opposition. We hang on for a narrow 3-2 victory over Blackburn, Vardy scoring a brace from the penalty spot, before a Travis-inspired 3-1 win over QPR on his return from suspension. To be fair, he returns from suspension quite regularly. This is followed by a close-fought draw away at Sheffield United.

Unfortunately, whilst our foul count remains solid, the cards aren't as free-flowing as I'd like – 35 fouls against QPR leading to only two bookings. In fact, after the brutal Middlesbrough game (eight bookings and a red), we only receive nine cards across the next four fixtures combined. Even Pearson, usually nailed-on to end up in the book, manages to go five games without incident.

There's a minor distraction at this point as I'm approached for the vacant Bristol City manager's job. I'm a little concerned about their state of mind, as they seem to think I sign players under 30. In any case, I wouldn't even leave Millwall for anything. Even if Atlético Madrid demoted Simeone to assistant manager and wanted me as head coach, my heart is here in London.

Our form puts us in touching distance of the playoffs. Win our home game against Birmingham and we'll be six points clear of Nottingham Forest in seventh with two to play. It's a tough game, and despite Grabara saving a penalty we still go behind a minute later from a corner. Things get worse, with Boto suffering torn knee ligaments, ruling him out for the rest of the season. But our morale does not drop. Vardy equalises with a header, and as the game drags on in the pouring rain, looking to be heading for a draw, Barnes pounces on a rebound to hammer the ball home!

    https://preview.redd.it/bfuzc5r447o41.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=460ab5fc3ca886fff1f0dbd292e5a8bd17711e79

We need just one more point, and get it at the first time of asking, James McClean rolling back the years with a headed finish in the 84th minute to seal a 1-0 victory. Three years since we last made the playoffs, we've finally made our way back!

    https://preview.redd.it/a7gsr74747o41.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ba873e7e331dce5431f1b0af88b8273829fcf40e

    The Double Century

Our position secure, the final game of the season is a freebie. Unfortunately our card count over the second half of the campaign was unable to match the incredible tally racked up before Christmas, and we've practically no chance of equalling our 46 game record. Nevertheless, I want us to close out the regular season in style, and play a brutal 4-5-1, with five ball-winning midfielders including Pearson, Travis, Xhaka, and Besic.

    https://preview.redd.it/3ipbsu0b47o41.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c11d7c746edeac54afd58d57744aceeb9361b025

This game is my 200th in management, adding another cause for celebration. The previous 199 games, by my reckoning, have seen us pick up just over seven hundred bookings from four-and-a-half thousand fouls. These numbers rise further after only 1 minute and 49 seconds, when McClean receives a straight red card after scything down Sébastien Corchia in the box. I find this hilarious, until I realise he's now suspended for the playoffs. Xhaka follows him down the tunnel for a two-footed lunge early in the second half, before Pearson, Rafferty, and Besic all end up in the book. We lose, obviously, but I'm delighted with the shithousery on show and praise the performance anyway.

    Suspensions, Suspensions, and More Suspensions

We face Hull in the playoff semi-final. They're the worst opponent we could've had – our records against Leeds and Barnsley, the other two playoff contenders, are pretty good, whereas in our eight previous meetings against Hull we've only managed to beat them once.

    https://preview.redd.it/9hqy68fi47o41.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d176e2e87da0b8a16b69f53ea158d9360a1bcd80

Xhaka and McClean's latest red cards are punished with four-game bans, ruling them both out of contention entirely. I have backup for Xhaka, but with Boto and Ferguson out injured I have no left backs to choose from and Rafferty, a natural right back, will have to fill in there.

We start the first leg strongly, with Cooper scoring a towering header from a corner early on. Both sides create chances, but we manage to hold strong at the back – Grabara making a couple of solid saves, and Milosevic with a crucial last-ditch tackle to save us after a poor Vardy backpass. And we get the important second goal – another Cooper header from a corner! We go on to disrupt Hull's rhythm in true Millwall-style, picking up six bookings and another FA fine, taking the 2-0 lead to the KCOM for the return leg…

Unfortunately our disciplinary record is catching up to us. Fisher and Thompson reach 15 and 20 yellow cards respectively, and are banned for three games. Travis, despite setting a new Championship record for poor discipline, thankfully remains unsuspended.

    https://preview.redd.it/ot1ry0fl47o41.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ba2100aeb4959af0459df47702b1db7e12b20d48

The squad is stretched thin, and I'm forced to pick Tyler Burey for a rare start at right back for the return leg. With Milosevic one booking away from suspension as well, I make the gamble to drop him to the bench – four suspensions at once is already difficult enough.

Hull batter us from the first whistle. Somehow we keep them from scoring, but the cards mount up in the process – Garner, Pearson, Rafferty, and Travis all seeing yellow before half time. And despite our hard work we concede, from a corner of all things, just before the break. Our lead looks increasingly fragile, and to try and keep eleven men on the pitch I take off Travis and Pearson at half-time.

It doesn't work. Rafferty gets his marching orders instead, picking up a second booking on 68 minutes. Shane Ferguson is thankfully just about back from injury, and I sacrifice a striker to try and hang on. The shots rain in. We barely get out of our own half. But the footballing gods are on our side today – try as they might they can't find the equalising goal! Despite 27 shots to six, against ten men at the end, my team of Millwall bastards are going to Wembley!

    https://preview.redd.it/31cnbb1u47o41.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4a891f2eabb3ae5cdeaab96a241be2b6681fdfbe

No-One Likes Us, We Don't Care

One more game to make Millwall legends of this bunch. Leeds, with a 4-1 win in the first leg over Barnsley, look set to be our opponents. I watch the return leg, hoping for some injuries to key players, but leave early when Leeds go 5-1 up on aggregate.

    https://preview.redd.it/lv5dcu1057o41.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6d7445d207f435dfd221dfe0bd9b2e7decaf0e68

As predicted, we play Barnsley at Wembley. Preparation is not ideal. Barnes suffers a pulled calf muscle and has to be given painkilling injections to be able to make the final. More positively, however, Vardy decides to end his strop about club discipline, the week after we pick up three disciplinary fines in a row.

With only one full back – Ferguson – available, I'm forced to play Travis at right back. Besic partners Pearson in midfield. Collins returns to lead the line. The bench is fairly uninspiring – it's down to the starting eleven to make this happen. At the press conference I tell the baffled reporters that Barnsley are a poor team, before storming out after a couple of questions.

    https://preview.redd.it/e1s5ss7457o41.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d813d003e04acf2db5a28337b9c35fb4c56220f9

The siege mentality actually seems to pay off as we get off to a fantastic start – Ferguson winning the ball back high up the field and crossing for Collins – brought in from relegation-fodder Luton Town to much derision at the start of the year – to cushion it into the bottom corner! Barnsley hit back immediately, but their goal is ruled out for a tight offside... The rest of the half is fairly even, but we manage to go in at halftime at 1-0.

After all our hard fouling and work over the last four years, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried about throwing it all away now. But the players have other ideas. Within two minutes of the restart we look out of sight – Ferguson scoring his first goal of the year to put us two ahead, before Barnes heads in our third in the 47th minute…!

When Travis slots home the fourth just after the hour mark, it's all over. Something of an anti-climax, if that was even possible. I throw on Andy Carroll for his one last chance to do something useful, and shout at the players to try and increase our card count. Barnsley, spurred on by the lack of respect I've shown by bringing Carroll on, immediately pull two goals back, the first from the penalty spot. Enough stupidity – I swap Vardy for a midfielder, and we sit back and ruin the rest of the game with fouls…

    https://preview.redd.it/iou569ud57o41.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=de57889a4a2040fd5077debb3c880b566d4f5d0a

We've done it. After four long years, including two playoff appearances, flirtations with relegation, three board meetings to discuss my future, and nearly crippling the club financially in the pursuit of shithouseness, we've finally done it. And we did it without compromising on my philosophy – ending the year with a record 178 bookings from an astounding 1190 fouls. You can shove your tika-taka up your arse, we're bringing Millwallball to the Premier League at last!

    End of Season Awards

A season that will go down as one of the greatest in Millwall's history had more than its fair share of performances deserving of mention.

    Player of the Season

    https://preview.redd.it/uicp6uet67o41.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=38caffbe6e1a2dfd5e2e7d8e9294298239c031fa

I don't care what the fans think – Lewis Travis deserves this more than anyone – setting a Championship record for poor discipline. Including cup games, he received 19 yellow cards and three reds, picking up six separate suspensions as a result. Hero.

Notable mentions need to go to Ben Thompson, hitting 21 yellows for the year, and Budget Xhaka, meeting expectations with two dismissals during his loan. And finally, veteran shithouse James McClean. At 34-years-old, his appearances are rare, but he still managed to score three goals and pick up two red cards despite his limited game-time.

    Signing of the Season

For the most part our signings did okay, bar Andy Carroll. Besic and Xhaka coped well in midfield when needed, Collins chipped in with enough goals to make his signing worthwhile, and even Vardy started scoring in the end. But one signing stands above the rest, quite literally. Jake Cooper.

    https://preview.redd.it/ogxlmdkv67o41.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=192786e4b90428f2860d5a8a3dc17d16541aa8c3

A key figure in our first playoff season. And a key figure again now. He scored six goals, all headers from set pieces, but his contribution was more felt at the other end of the pitch. The guy won 381 headers in the league. 98 ahead of the next-best player.

    Performance of the Season

A difficult decision made easy on the last day. James McClean's straight red after 1 minute 49 seconds against Burnley. Superb stuff.

    Game of the Season

Numerous contenders here. The Burnley classic and the FA Cup exit to Crystal Palace (seven bookings and a red) are worthy of mention, as is the playoff second leg against Hull for us holding on to an aggregate win with only ten men…

But my vote goes to our win over Leeds back in September, in a performance that showed exactly what we were capable of. 32 fouls. Seven bookings. A fraction of the shots and chances that Leeds created. And a late goal from a reserve right back to nick it.

    [FM19] Rayo Vallecano - Season 1&2 Breakdown

    Posted: 22 Mar 2020 07:11 PM PDT

So with the current situation, I found myself going back to FM19 for the first time in over a year. I wanted a fresh challenge that was new to me and after never managing in Spain before, I decided to take over Madrid's third team - Rayo Vallecano.

The objective for season one was simple - dont get relegated. Backboned by the superstars in the team such as Gael Kakuta, Bebe and Jordi Amat, we miraculously got to the Spanish cup semi final (only to be nattered by Barcelona) and finish 5th in La Liga.

With European Football now coming much quicker than I could have anticipated, and my reputation being the third lowest in the league still, finding suitable players was a difficult task. I managed two key signings over the summer in an unhappy Maxwel Cornet from Lyon for €3.3 million and an out of contract Andreas Pereria from Manchester United. Combined with extending the loan of Raul de Tomas from R Madrid for another season and I felt that mid table was our floor for the year.

In the second game of the season, disaster struck as Cornet broke his leg, out til mid march, and my only paid signing was gone. Bebe, Kakuta and the under utilized Jose Pozo came to the fore then for me and we ended up qualifying out of our group (Spurs, Fenerbahche and Maribor), a group I had limited ambitions of escaping without Cornet. Our reward for this was a First Knockout Round tie with Anderlecht which we clawed through 3-2 on aggregate. We were then drawn against Porto. This is sadly where our European run finished, and after being dumped out of the Spanish Cup by Barcelona for the second year running, we could focus on securing European football for next year from the league. This proved much easier than last year, mainly thanks to Real Madrid finishing 7th and gifting us six points we totally didn't deserve.

As the season drew to a close Atletico Madrid were eight points behind me (currently sitting 4th) with 4 games in hand. They would play 5 games in the sixteen day fixture gap I had, and collected a total of 8 points from these 5 games. As I had a superior head to head record, and they were the only team that could surpass me for 4th, I knew going into my final two games that one win would seal Champions League football for season 3. My final two games were against Villarreal and Eibar, sitting 9th and 10th respectively, with nothing left to play for. The day before the Villarreal game a notification came through that my goalkeeper had been injured in training. He had yet to miss a minute of game time over the course of the two seasons of my managerial career. His backup is the 34 year old club captain who now gets to play the final two games of the season, after which he is retiring.

After a disastrous defeat at Villarreal, we headed to the final day knowing to secure UCL we needed to match or better the Atletico result. They played their final game a week before we played ours and beat Tenerife. We had a week in training knowing we had a win and in for the UCL.

In the 88th minute we were trailing 1-0, then the unthinkable happened. Raul de Tomas scored to level the game and as the additional time expired Gael Kakuta poked home from a delicious cross from Bebe, after a bit of ping pong in the box and we'd done it. Rayo Vallencano are going to the Champions League after 2 seasons at the helm.

TLDR; Took relegation candidates Rayo Vallecano to UEL after season one and one step further to the UCL after season 2, largely thanks to the collapse of both Real and Atletico Madrid.
