I just finished the most mental season I've had in this game and I want to tell you about it

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 10:49 AM PST

There's a tldr at the bottom

So, after screwing around with various saves with midtable Italian teams, I decided to try one with a stronger team and picked Inter and what followed was insane.

First things first, I settled on a 4-3-3 with high press and had to bring in some reinforcements in the summer. I brought in:

    Tonali for 12.5m + 5m bonuses

Vignato for 185k, whom I sent out on loan immediately

Antony, a Brazilian winger from Sao Paulo, on loan with 20m option to buy

And the marquee signing - Chiesa for 50m + 36m bonuses

In terms of outgoing transfers, I offloaded Candreva (10m), Vecino (22m) and Valero (600k)

First two games of preseason, a loss to Bordeaux and a draw with Lyon, showed me the tactic needed some adjustments, which I made and won the next 3 friendlies (Roma, Milan, RB Salzburg) with a 7-0 gd.

CL draw time. Of course, being third seed would put me up against some strong teams, but even so, the draw was brutal - Real Madrid, Chelsea and RB Leipzig.

We start with Real Madrid at the San Siro and they get a penalty 2min into the game, which Hazard converts - not good. Just before half-time Politano scores to make it 1-1. Second half goes back and forth, but remains goalless until the 91st minute when Politano sends a free kick into the box, De Vrij nods it and Gagliardini powers it in... but it's chalked off. I'm still fuming about this when 2min later Hazard scores, at which point I lose my shit and leave my seat, only to come back to see it was also chalked off and the game ended in a draw. Phew.

Next up, Chelsea at Stamford bridge. Not much to say, we have an absolute 'mare and get trounced 3:0. Not good, but at least we get to take 6 points off Leipzig next, right? Wrong! We have another poor performance in the first game in Germany and barely scrape a 1:1 draw. It goes much better in the return fixture and we're 2:0 up when Skriniar gets a second yellow for something after winning a header in their box. We still win the game 4:2, but now he's going to miss the game at the Bernabeu and that's going to cost us.

So we get to Spain and Godin is the chosen one to stand in for Skriniar. 9 minutes into the game and ol' Diego forgets which team he's on and man marks the hell out of De Vrij, leaving Isco completely alone to open the scoring. Nothing else happens in the first half. We come out swinging after the break and Lautaro draws us level in the 50th. Just a minute later, Odriozola sends in a volley, Handanovic parries, Hazard beats Lazaro to the rebound and fires it, but Hando parries it again only for Benzema to blast it in, completely undisturbed by Godin. We're still pushing and on 58min Lautaro scores again for 2-2. Not 5 minutes later and completely unmarked Isco makes it 3-2, before finally an awful back pass by, you guessed it, allows Benz to get to it and finalize the score, leaving us well and truly fucked with 5 points from 5 games. Naturally after this traitorous performance Godin was yelled at, fined, transfer listed and never seen again.

Leipzig though did us a bit of a favor and got a point off Chelsea, leaving us with a chance. All we had to do was beat the Brits 3:0 and we'd go through. How hard could it be? Pretty damn hard as it turns out. We absolutely dominated them, firing off 22 shots but they just weren't going in. That's until Lautaro finally opened the scoring 80min into the game. At this point we were throwing pretty much everything, including the kitchen sink, at them but it took until the 94th min to find the second via Esposito and there wasn't time for more. So close.

Winter mercato time. Alexis came to whine at me about his playtime so I told him to piss off back to Manchester if he doesn't like it and he did. Cool. Then Lukaku came to whine at me about his playtime so I told him to piss off back to Manchester if he doesn't like it and he agreed. Sadly, they didn't want him back for some reason, but thankfully ol' Roman Moneybags came in with 80m to bring him back to Chelsea and off he went. Arsenal came calling for Godin in yet another piss poor attempt at fixing their defense and off he went. China also called and asked about Asamoah and off he went too. At this point I was on a row so I sent Gabigol on loan to Aston Villa and released Berni on free for good measure.

In terms of new arrivals, Handanovic had done some stupid shit that annoyed me so I was looking for a new keeper with all of the Lukaku money and I found some lad at Dynamo Zagreb called Livakovic, which is funny because in my language that sounds suspiciously like something that can be loosely translated as Donkey...vic. Anyway, I brought him in and immediately installed him as the N1 goalkeeper and well.. we conceded a lot more goals in the second half of the season, but I still like him. I also needed a new centre back, preferably one that hasn't been mummified yet. Thankfully, I noticed we had a buyback clause on that Belgian lad whose name I can never get right so I got him back. And I noticed Alex Telles was transfer listed for a very reasonable price and brought him back too. Finally, we needed a new striker since the big boy was gone, but I didn't want to pay a lot for one, because I have Icardi coming back next season. So after searching around for a really long time, I came up with nothing and decided to take a punt at loaning in a Milan player. Surprisingly they agreed and Leao was our new number... well, not 9 cuz that shirt's reserved, but you get the idea. Anyway, he was completely useless, I assume intentionally so, which would explain why Milan would let him go to a rival.

Speaking of Icardi, since he was on loan I had him moved to the u20s. For some reason my dumbass DoF or Head of Youth Department or whoever I have set to deal with the youth contracts took that as his queue to renew the guy's contract in fucking March, despite the fact the old one was signed in August and still had nearly 18 months to run. So now I'll have to break the bank and renew his contract AGAIN in June to block PSG from getting him. Sucks man

Anyway, mercato over, down to Europa we go and it's another Red Bull - this time Salzburg. Annoyingly, the first game was just 3 days before a much more important Derby d'Italia and I opted to send in the B team. We lost 3:0 in a game where we had 3 goals disallowed, which was rather infuriating. So much so, that I sent in the big guns for the return leg at San Siro, despite the fact they had played an insane and quite grueling game against Juventus (we'll get into that later) just 4 days earlier.

We were 2 up with just 10 min on the clock and things were looking promising. But then their keeper downed a couple of Red Bulls, them wings popped out and the motherfucker started flying all lighting fast into godly saves. It took until the 75th minute, but we finally got through him for the third goal.

Now I had a choice on my hands. I could pull back and try to hit them on the counter or beat them on penalties. Or I could keep pushing to win it in regulation time. I opted for the latter. 87min in, they get a corner and Onguene, who was a transfer target before this game, gets to it first and scores. Well you can forget about sunny Milano, buddy! And just to add insult to injury, refs disallowed yet another of our goals a minute later.

This was also the game with the most clear cut chances I've seen - 9.

So, no joy in Europe for us. What about Coppa Italia, also known as the B team proving grounds around the Sunning Center? Well, we got through to the quarters easy enough and we drew Lazio. Esposito opens the scoring for us before Correa equalizes in the first half. Second half starts and Correa completes the turnaround. Bastoni draws us level and 84 minutes in we get a penalty, which Politano converts to complete our own turnaround. I'm already celebrating when in the 90th minute they get a corner highlight (yes, again) - Immobile nods it to Luis Alberto who powers it in.

Nothing happens in extra time (literally, 0 highlights) and it's penalties and they're up first. Immobile misses. Politano misses. Parolo scores. Telles scores. Luis Alberto scores. Sensi misses. Cataldi misses. Esposito misses. Finally Correa scores the deciding pen. Absolutely mental game, I'm not even mad. Well, maybe a little.

And finally, the Serie A. We started pretty good with 4 wins and 1 draw in the first 5 games, which put us 2nd behind Juventus who won all 5. Matchday 6 would be against them at the San Siro. We absolutely demolished them 4:1.

You'd think that'd shake their confidence, but no. They won the next 7 on the bounce with a gd of +21, while we only managed 5 wins and 2 draws, which despite being undefeated and trashing our rival, put us 3 points behind.

They then lost to Torino, but again recovered and went on another monster run of 10 straight wins with a +27. before the second game between us in Turin (the one I mentioned earlier caused me to send the B team in Europe). Worth mentioning we were still undefeated and despite that we were second and could only get within a point of them if we won the game. And what a game it was.

Ronaldo opened the scoring, Lautaro made it 1:1 before Higuain put them back in front, only for Barella to make it even again. And this was just the first half. Second half also started explosively with Chiesa quickly making it 2:3. Lead didn't last long as Higuain popped off again just a couple of minutes later and made it 3:3. Then Dybala completed another turnaround - 4:3. With time running out it was Lautaro that made himself the hero, scoring on 86 minutes only to watch Esposito overshadow him by clinching a winner on 88 minutes. Absolutely insane game.

Afterwards, to the surprise of nobody at this point, they went on another winning streak but this time so did we. After 30 games we were still undefeated, a point off first place and I was already working on the title of the final table screenshot I was going to post here. Something along the lines of "TFW an invincible season is not enough for a title".

Anyway, matchday 31 we're playing Napoli and Juventus are playing Roma. Feels like this could be crucial. They only had 1 tough game against Milan afterwards, while I had both Roma and Milan. My entire squad was flashing red being nervous and apprehensive, but we somehow squeked past them thanks to an Antony goal, while I watched the latest scores in despair as Juve trashed Roma 3:0.

And then... something happened. I don't know what, they just collapsed out of nowhere and drew 5 of their last 7 games. At this point I had kinda grown attached to the idea of invincible runner-up and I even tried to throw (draw) some games on purpose, but we were on such a row that even when I moved all my players to positions above the center line when 3:1 up against Milan, we still scored another instead of them equalizing, So I gave up on that idea and went for the records instead. Most points (104), most wins (33, tied with 13/14 Juve) and most wins in a row (20). We also had the best defense with least conceded (22) and most clean sheets (25), while Juventus had the best attack with a mental record of 109 goals scored, a full 30 more than us.

The end of season awards were absolutely shambolic though. Ronaldo naturally won best player and best forward and Pjanic probably deservedly won best midfielder, but best defender and goalkeeper going to them as well despite our record is nonsense. At least Tonali won best young player.

TL;DR: Nearly lost the title in an invincible season, some insane european and cup games and Juve are mental. Also, Chelsea have more money than brains

Has anyone mastered how to get your team to pass across the face of goal?

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 05:33 PM PST

It is so frustrating, when it seems the Ai can get their players to square the ball in a 2 on 1 situation or shift in it in a counter, my players will just hog it and shoot from the most acute angle. My tactics overall work, but it is so frustrating when you lose a game and chance after chance has been squandered because of this. It really does affect the realism.
