    Red Star Belgrade Challenge

    Posted: 18 Sep 2019 10:13 AM PDT

After 13 days, 14 hours and 50 minutes of game time and 14 seasons, I think it's time to write up a review of my challenge. You decide if I failed or succeeded.

The challenge is simple - you take over a club and try to win everything that's possible without relying on South American wonderkids or splash out lots of cash on already proven superstars. You focus on upgrading your youth recruitment and training facilities and develop players through your junior ranks. Transfer policy? Well, two options - you either don't buy at all, or if you have to, you buy young domestic players which probably won't be ready for a first team action immediately.

What's the best team to do this challenge with? All of them, but with some of them it will be so hard that it will suck the fun out of it. I have done this with Anderlecht, Celtic, Dinamo Zagreb, Rijeka and CSKA Moscow so far (tried with MANY others, but I couldn't even finish the season without getting sacked). I am picking clubs that are somewhat strong on their domestic league and offer European qualifications. It was Red Star Belgrade's turn. :)

Rich history, decent financial stature, average or slightly above average youth facilities, but nowhere near strong enough to pass EL or CL group stages.

So far, after 14 seasons I won 13 league titles, 13 cup titles, 2 Europa League titles, but no CL so far. Tbh, I haven't even been near it. Most of the times I've been finishing 3rd in the group and even if I passed it, I'd be knocked out by way stronger teams than me in the First Knockout Round.

How did I keep my star players away from the foreign offers? Reject them all and then say to the guy that he's an influence I can't lose in the locker room. Ezpz - thanks FM for this, lol.

These are some of the players that carried me 14 seasons to success. Now, most of them are old and don't play on their expected level and my young hot prospects are not yet good enough to replace them in the first team. Which is why I came in 2nd on the table behind Partizan Belgrade in my 14th season.

And these are the young prospects that are expected to develop into world-class footballers and get me back on title-wining track. Some of them are already being on rotation with some of the older guys, but almost none of them is a key player. Will see what happens :)

Enjoy Andreja Prazic, one of the best prospects I've seen in all of my FM experience.

I will update with some other info either with a new post or down in the comments if there are people who wanna know how some other things developed. Worth mentioning now is that two teams from the Serbian Super League qualify directly in the CL group stages :)

EDIT: I see I haven't mentioned that the main goal of this challenge is to make a world-class team made ONLY of domestic players that come through your young ranks. They'll probably be called for the national team as well later in their career, so if your team gets stronger - your nation gets stronger as well.
