Does this happen usually? I've only played a couple of seasons and this is the first time I've seen such a thing

FM FAQs: Why does my tactic work brilliantly against some sides - but badly against others?

Hi all. While hanging out in the help thread a bit over the past few months - I've noticed the same questions continue to come up. So, over the next few weeks, I'm aiming to create a set of generic answers to these common questions.

Today's question. Why does my tactic work against some teams, but not against others?

If your tactic works against some sides and not others - it is probably because it relies on the opposition either attacking or defending you for it to be effective. This is a good thing against the sides it works against - but you need a second tactic to use when playing the sides you struggle to beat.

If you are getting strong results against sides with a higher reputation than you, but struggling against worse teams - you most likely have a tactic which is able to effectively exploit space that teams leave for you, but not a tactic which effectively creates space when sides sit back.

Try creating a new tactic with lower tempo, fewer playmakers, shorter passing, that encourages players to be more patient going forward and pass to feet. You can also try and get more of your players to go forward (and create a more fluid style in general), and adding work ball into box.

If you are getting strong results against sides beneath you, but not sides at or above your level, you have the opposite issue.

Try sitting deeper in defence to create space for a counter attack and use longer passing and more rigidity to make these counters more effective. Pass into space and having forwards who look to get behind the defence may also help.
