[fm18] Having been extremely dominant during the start of my save, AI Managed Man U. were relegated after 2024/2025. Here's the full story.

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 12:06 PM PDT

\Note, this is fm18. I was playing as Milan, Man U was AI managed, in 21/22 I beat hem in the CL final. But apart from that we didn't really interact that much. Also, I play in Dutch, so my English may be rusty. I hope you enjoy.*

    So what went wrong?

Mourinho was a very, very successful manager right from the start. From 2017/2018 to 2022/2023 United won the League 5 out of 6 seasons. Only losing the title to a just slightly better City in 20/21 who won the league by 1 point. In this same period, United reached 5 CL finals, winning 3 of them. (in 2018,2019 & 2020)

    2017/2018

Starting this save in the summer of 2017. United started off well, but Mourinho wanted some reinforcements. You can't win the league with Young playing as a rb can you? So Darmian and Young were sold, and Ricardo Pereira and Domenico Criscito were brought in for 39 million euro's altogether. United won the league easily and the CL too, but Mou wasn't happy with his squad just yet.

    2017/2018 Team of the season

    2018/2019

United decided to spend big. They brought in players for a whopping 181 million euro's in total. Yarmelenko (45,5m), Belotti (76m) were the biggest stars brought in. Mou didn't think this was enough though. He wanted a even bigger budget. Avram Glazer didn't agree, so he sold the club to a certain Markus Kraetschmer in december. Mou proved to be right for now, winning the Uefa Super Cup, the CL and the PL. A mini treble. This United seemed unbeatable, but Mou still wasn't happy with his team..

    2018/2019 Team of the season

    2019/2020

Mou decided that the days of parking the bus were truly over. Since you can't play attacking football with just Lukaku, Sanchez, Rashford, Belotti, Lingard, Mata, Martial and Yarmolenko, he decided to spend big again. Icardi, Callejon were brought in to reinforce the attack. With Nainggolan and Guerreiro also coming in. United spend 206m euro's this year. You can't win the league without spending some money right? United went on to win both their third CL and PL in a row. What could Mou say? He truly is the special one.

    2019/2020 Team of the season

    2020/2021

Pogba decided that after winning 3 CL's with United he needed a new challenge and was sold to Barcelona. United briefly considered buying a new central midfielder, but quickly realized that buying another attacker was much more important. Bailey was brought in for 97m euro's. That winter United failed FFP and were transfer banned for 2 seasons [Suprised Pikachu.jpg], apart from FFP they also failed to win any prizes.

    2020/2021 Team of the season

    2021/2022 and 2022/2023

Despite United being transfer banned for 2 seasons, thus bringing no new players in, United managed to still win the league both seasons and reaching 2 CL finals, losing both of them.

    2021/2022 Team of the season

    2023/2024

Ah Mourinho's dreaded 7th season syndrome. With no significant signings in or out Mou started to fell out with his squad. And after a series of bad results Mourinho was fired in March, having spend 7 years and 303 days at the club. Nagelsmann took over in april, United came in 9th. Next season they would have to make their way back to the top under a fresh, new, manager.

    2023/2024 Team of the season

    2024/2025.

Nagelsmann decided that united might have a striker too many, so Belotti was sold to Barca for 79m. Nagelsmann started the season pretty badly, impressively bad. He managed to lose 10 of the 12 matches. Including losing 0-3 in Liverpool and losing 0-2 to newly promoted Middlesbrough (Middlesbrough away, never easy). After losing 2-4 at home to Watford, board decided it was enough. They fired Nagelsman after just 12 PL games. Argel Fucks was brought in. Surely he would be able to turn this trainwreck of a season around?

Well.. Fucks.. He did not turn this trainwreck of as season around. In fact, it took Fucks in impressive 10 matches to reach his first PL win, a 2-0 victory at home to Leicester City. In march, rivals Man City, proved to be too much and after losing 0-1 at the Etihad, Fucks went on the win just 2 of the remaining 9 matches. United came in 19th and were relegated. Over the course of this season, they lost 22 games, drew 8, and won 8. Fucks was able to keep his job however, Fucks knows why.

    After this season:

All of the big stars left United, De Gea, went to Spurs, Rashford to Chelsea, Icardi to Arsenal and Bailly to Juve All of them on a free. United was bankrupt. Fucks got to 2 place in the Championship next season and missed the promotion, he got fired. Meanwhile, Mourinho won another Champions league title with Monaco.

Is there a good way of beating gegenpress?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 02:05 PM PDT

For the life of me whenever I come up against teams using gegenpress I can never overcome it, from friends to AI teams using a gegenpress(esque) style. Has anyone got a tactic that tends to work or am I just doomed to a life of succumbing to it?

    Retraining Youth Positions

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 06:33 AM PDT

As I play with inside forwards and since inside forwards don't seem to exist with regens I want to train some youngsters to play on the opposite wing. Apparently controlling individual training is not enough and they need gametime in that position. My youth manager though will of course always pick them on their natural side for matches. Aside from manually managing the youth matches is there any way to set positions for players in your youth team?

I'd be interested to know any of your thoughts on this piece I wrote :-). Do you have any experience with inverted wing-backs, and how closely does it align with mine? Is it working?
